    Default A rant about AIDS

**Before anyone reads any farther I do not mean any prejudice by this post at all**

Okay so my mother is watching Oprah the other day when her and Bono painted the town red for AIDS awarness. She called me so upset not understanding why.

Why is it that if Americans will only donate $.50 a day the AIDS infected african nation they can get their medicne and have a better chance of surviving this disease. But my mother is so close to dying from AIDS but the drugs that keep her alive cost her thousands a month. So why is it that because she is an American and not African that she is left to die when others it takes only $.50 a damn day.

Yes there are charitys and foundations that will help AIDS patients but by the time the paperwork and bullshit is out of the way they are lucky to have survived the waiting period.

Rarrrrrrrr it just infuriates me to listen to my mother cry over the phone to me because she cannot afford her medicne and because her husband makes more than minmum wage they cant get help with her medicne. Its just bullshit.

Okay so I feel a bit better now but I could just scream.....then cry I just feel so helpless.

I saw a similar special, although this wasn't Oprah. I thought the same thing....many of the newly opened medical centers throughout impoverished nations in Africa are opened in part by the drug companies themselves! I don't understand how they do that there, but in the US, these same companies charge up the *ss for the very same drugs!

It's just crazy. It's great that they are helping the people in Africa and elsewhere, but I wish there'd be more access here in the States to low-cost AIDS drugs.

destiny- im sorry about what u go through with your mom...that sounds terrible. and i HATE the situation your talking about, i really do. i hate it for people like your mom who have to suffer because either 1) she makes too little or 2) she makes too much. it SUCKS that middle class people sometimes almost get ignored. if i was in the situation you are in, i would be busting my ass working at the club to get the medication she needs. that really sux...i sympathize for your mother.

I'm sure there's some practical angle to the "charity discount" for AIDS in Africa. Many impoverished countries allow their citizens to participate in experimental medical testing because the subjects are willing (they have nothing to lose and are unable to sue the companies.)
I complain a lot about how the system is abused in America but face it, your worst day in the US is better than the best day in rural Africa.

PS There are things your mom can do to improve her meds situation. They might not be a lot of fun to do, like reducing her assets to qualify for help, or even moving to a state with better healthcare....but there's no point in suffering if there's a way to prevent it. "Quality of life, not quantity."

our county is controled by the fossile fuel & pharmacy industry. there are alot of drugs out there that cost less than what they put on the price tag but if drug companies sell them at what they should they'll go broke, so they'd rather others suffer and die. meanwhile in a 3rd world country they dont have that power and it looks charitable so they're more than willing to help out. the only thing i can think of is writing letters around & see what can be done, but even that is pretty futile in U.S.

Like Max says, it's not the same. They are testing drugs on the people, looking like humanitarians and getting free human experimenting on a helpless population. Be glad your mom isn't being treated like a laboratory rat.

It's terrible that your mother can't afford her medication. I think it is a failure on every level of government and industry to create drugs that sick people can't buy. However, one doesn't impact the other - raising awareness and money for AIDS in Africa doesn't mean your mother isn't deserving, any more than raising money domestically means that Africans are not deserving, or raising money for lung cancer means that AIDS or Cystic Fibrosis sufferers aren't deserving. It is a complementary, not a competitive effort.
