    Default gun permit question

I have a question for anyone that wants to help. My boyfriend wants me to get a pistol permit in my name so that he can purchase a pistol to give to his ex-gf as she returned all of his belongings including his pistol to him. She lives alone and needs a gun. For some reason he doesn't want to change his license address to where he now resides and thinks it would be easier for me to change my address which I do have to change anyway since I moved here. I just feel weird putting a gun permit in my name if I am not buying a gun. Does it matter whose name the permit goes under if someone else is buying it?

I could be wrong here but wouldn't the gun then be licensed to you???

yeah, I'm pretty sure that if the permit is in your name then the gun is licensed to you. I wouldn't do it.

You don't ever, ever give a gun that is licensed to YOU to someone else to use. That's illegal. If anything were to happen and that gun is used...you are liable for it...whether or not you are the one who fired it.

I don't understand why your bf needs to buy his ex (who makes a lot of money) a gun. If she wants a gun, let her go out and buy her own gun; licensed to her.

It sounds like you are dealing with a man who has not let go of his relationship with this other woman.

It is not your responsibility to take care of his ex. You may want to rethink this relationship and run, not walk, away.

Venus, why would he want me to do that? If the permit is in my name and he actually pays for the gun it's still is my gun correct?

That is WAY illegal! Do not, I repeat, DO NOT do this.

All the posts about this guy add up to a pretty obvious conclusion: He's bad news. I think you already know this. I'm with VG! Run away as fast as you can!

Yeah, don't put your name on a gun permit. It's the same as having a car registered in your name- you are liable for damages incurred with said object(s).

(My ex had a gun with a "ghost" name on the papers & I joked about stealing it...BUT I'm not a criminal. DO NOT enable people who can't get their own guns through legal channels.)

Please, do not do it! If that gun were to ever be used in a crime, it would all point straight back to you-plus, it's illegal. Why can't she get a gun on her own? And why is your boyfriend so concerned about his ex???

I am sure she could, she is high end real estate agent in Charlotte. He says she has one she keeps in her vehicle for going into rough areas of town. He said she returned the one that was his and it was "too much pistol" for her and he wants to replace it with another one since she lives alone. I mean, it's okay to care about her well-being but why do I need to purchase the permit? Should I call a sherriff's office and ask them for an opinion or will that cause more trouble?

    The story doesn't sound right.

Reading between the lines, it sounds like he's trying to get you to perform a "straw purchase". This is when a person who cannot legally buy a firearm gets someone else to buy it for him. To legally purchase and own a firearm, you cannot have a record of felony convictions, must be mentally stable (i.e. have not been committed to a psychiatric institution etc), over 18 (or 21-I forget which), etc etc. State and local restrictions may also apply and may be more restrictive than federal regs. There will probably be a "waiting period" too.

I'm assuming that when you say "permit", you mean the permit to actually purchase a handgun, and not a concealed carry permit.

Depending on your state, the transfer of a handgun from you to the ex-gf may be illegal, and if the ex-gf is in another state, it may be illegal.

Nope. Don't do it. Absolutely not. His story does not make sense.

Edit: I suggest you google the north carolina firearms regulations and federal handgun regs. The NRA website may be of help.

If I were you, I wouldn't get involved in this - sounds shady.

I wouldn't even take it that far. She already owns a gun, so obviously it wouldn't be difficult for her to get another one if she wanted. And why can't she simply take the gun she already has for her car into her house with her? Red Flag, Red Flag!!!!

you don't need to call the sherrif's office unless you're not convinced by now that it is illegal! And as mentioned you are responsible for whatever activity the gun is involved in. Just tell him no you're not doing it and she can get her own goddam gun permit. And if he gets pissed about it well screw him to high heaven! What right does he have to get pissed at you for refusing to do something illegal and that could have serious ramifications to YOU?

He is suppose to help me in the morning move a few things and go get my car from the repair shop and he said I could do it myself now since he had to go get change the address on his license so he could get a gun. He is a pilot and does have an FAA license, so why can't he get the thing? Now, he is saying for me to call him in the morning and he will help me when I am ready so I guess now he isn't going? He then calls me back and asks if I have been on the phone. And I am like what do you mean, he says on the phone because his ex won't call him back regarding a house he wants to buy from her that entails a 12,000 commission and I am acting weird, I guess accusing me of talking with her. I just said I am avoiding getting hurt again and maybe she has a bigger sale or busy right now, I don't know. Now, he is just passive and says he'll help me tommorrow just call and let him know what time.

I read way too damn much ann Rule. Because my first thoughts would be my husband and his ex plotting to kill me and make it seem a suicide since it was "my gun"

I swear she wrote a story similar to this , it was like the woman was shot with her "own" gun and only "her"prints were on it but it turned out the other woman had shot the chick wearing gloves while she slept and then put the gun in her hand so that her prints were on it.

She was busted or looked at mostly due to the fact the gun powder wasnt on the deadwomans hand along with the blood splatter being inconsistant.

But as the rest said its VERY illegal. If it turns out that this chick has a mental issue or is a felon somewhere in her legal background, you are in deep deep shit even more.

they'll see it as supplying guns to a felon etc.

This shouldnt even be a question of whether or not to do it . Why would he even ask that?

Well reason being he knows hes running some kinda scam and obviously doesnt want to have the dirt on his hands.

he doesnt care about your wellbeing period.

This is all strange. I would just tell him that you don't want to do anything illegal, and that you aren't sure of what the law states. If he gets mad at you for this, there may be something else going on. I mean, why in the world would someone ask you to break the law, and then get genuinely upset that you won't?

BTW - There was a time when I had a question about a law pertaining to people with mental disabilities, and I went to the local police station and asked them. They were even nice enough to tell me what law/ordinance it was so I could go to the library and make copies of it.

I agrre with everyone on here...DO NOT DO THIS FOR HIM! They are right to think that he may be plotting a crime, with a gun registered to you. That way, the crime trail leads back to you and you can be charged. Don't be an idiot, run away.

Here this will help, it is a complete run down of the gun law for your state. It's 40 pages, but well worth the info it contains. READ IT!

Could he get a license to fly a plane but not be able to get one to purchase a gun? Or it could be that he can purchase the gun but wants me to purchase it and why?

I can't believe he asked you to do this for him. He sounds like a real loser. I wouldn't be involved with anyone who would ever take a risk like this, and he shouldn't be spending time with his ex in the first place. There is no telling what he is up to, or how far he will go. Get out now while you can. Don't tell him you are leaving, because it is going to come down on you heavy. All indications are that this guy is not going to be easy to leave. He clearly doesn't have good character. He is supposed to be protecting you, not putting you at risk!

I thought pilots have a pretty easy time getting firearms??

Either way ....I'm tellin you there is something not right here. I have no clue as to what his reasoning could be ...it's just not right.
