Default Can you buy a network port & plug it in?

Dell swears to me my motherboard may need replacing because the network port is twisted out of place. I think their juicing me! I have someone who'll plug new ones on for free. Is it possible to have my local technician repair it? If so, where do I order the little ports? They may be called PCMC or Express cards.

Depends where the network port is on the computer. Is it attached to the motherboard directly, or through the PCI slots? How is it not working and what exactly is wrong with it?

Also, if you have someone that isn't recognized by Dell as licensed to work on computers, you may lose your warranty, if that matters (or applies in this case).

My warranty expired December 7!!! Feel my pain! Because it's bent skyward I can't fit the DSL cable into it. I'm using wi-fi instead. It looks to be plugged onto the motherboard, that's the green board, right?

Yup, the big green PC board in your computer is the motherboard. As an alternative, you could just purchase a broadband PCI card and use that instead of the integrated connection. If you wanted to keep an integrated connection, you can get them from pretty much any computer or electronics supply place. They'll solder onto the motherboard directly. If you're not comfortable with this, take it to a computer shop for the work. It's not exactly a major repair or anything.

My uncle is a technician so he's going to repair it. He said Dell tends to have their own 'super special parts' they try to force you to buy. But you're saying those ports are universally acceptable right?

Dell wants you to use their parts so they'll make more money off of you..

Yes, the integrated broadband units are all pretty similar. You'll need to find one with the same pin locations as your original, but that shouldn't be difficult at all. If your uncle's a computer tech, you should be all good to go.

Your uncle isn't far off, however I have a few "special parts" that work with dell systems that are Network Cards. You're welcome to one if you need it Opt.

Only trouble I've had with dell parts are the PSUs. A new nic (pci or isa) should slide in just fine to most of their units.

Dell sucks.. all the large computer manufacturers seem to be making absolute pieces of crap. You can't even buy parts that cheap.

Put a network card in and see if it works. If it does, keep what you have. You are going to have to see if the network card is compatible with the system you are using, which means a visit to the Dell website. Do the footwork and you can figure out what the problem is.

I was about to tell you to get a network card too! My Dell came without one so if I ever go wireless I'll go to the nearest Comp USA or Office Max and get a card.

Thanx everyone. I've taken the path of least headache and gotten a traveler's wireless router. I'll get it fixed in the summer when I'm home again. Then I'll have time to do research on cards.
