New Year's Day at La Casa de Yek!

There is a Southern tradition requiring the consumption of much blackeye peas and turnip greens on New Year's Day. The peas bring you luck in the coming year, and the greens bring wealth. I always kept this tradition just because I love greens and peas. Then came New Year's Day 2006, and I did not have either. I went on to have the worst year of my life, with NO luck and NO wealth.

Lesson learned. Tomorrow, 1/1/07, there will be a bigass pot of blackeye peas, a huge mess of greens, and some skillet cornbread for good measure. And what the hey, maybe some beer and wine too. Anyone in Los Angeles who wants to come help me eat it would be more than welcome! I'll be serving up sometime around late afternoon.

My family used to do ham, black eye peas, and cornbread every New Year's Day. For an extra good luck measure, my mom's tradition was to add a dime to the black eye peas and whoever found it got good luck for the year. My dad always found it!

Anyway, I would totally join you for your New Year's Day feast, if I were in LA!

Well I always rekindle my luck life etc on Chinese New Year, so that is not until Feb 18 for me. Since I'm year of the Snake, the coming year being the Pig is not so great for me... just that phase of the cycle. Pity there will be no celebration of it here. Guess I'll have to do some cleaning and get a shit load of firecrackers, and do it myself. Anyone wanting to send me a tiger pendant is more than welcome to do so. I know I have to try and deliver/send at least one.

Collards and black eyed peas? Well I don't mind good collard greens, never ever liked black eyed peas though.

I want dumplings, and tofu fish, and that super special BBQ honey chilliy pork... man I'm going to be missing Melbourne.

Actually a mix of collard, mustard, and turnip greens. I like them all and couldn't decide, so I got a blend... and my grandmother's recipe! Should be pretty tasty!

Yup, same here -- I like ham, black-eyed peas, cornbread and collards to start the year off right! Not sure if they affect my luck, but they are very, very tasty.

I loves me some black-eyed peas, but despite my father being from Alabama I can't stand the greens. And cornbread....mmmmmmmm. Have fun!
waffles are just pancakes with little squares on them.
