    Straightener

I as wondering if it's possible for my straightener to still work but lose it's working power ability? I have had a chi straightener for about 2 years now. It still turns on and works fine but I was wondering if it's possible for it to be losing it's maximum ability to heat? Thus maybe it's time for a new one...

I think so? I had a straightener for about 2 years and towards the end it was still turning on, but took longer to heat up, and eventually one of the plates just didn't heat up.

I've gone through many straighteners in the 2 years I've been dancing. When I'm at work, I leave it on all night in the dressing room so I don't have to sit there and let it warm up for quick touch-ups. After leaving it on night after night for 12 hours, they slowly start to die. I usually just get cheap ones ($30-50) from Sally Beauty, because since I go through them so quickly, I don't want to go buy an expensive one that will also die on me.

But yes, from my experience, straighteners can lose their maximum hotness level and start to not get as hot anymore.

FOLICA.com is a great place to read thousands of reviews on all types of straightners. I think they also have the cheapest prices for chi's. I have the solia and find it is better than the chi, check it out!

I'll check that site out thanks! Has anyone tried the paul brown straightener? and is a $150 ceremic straightener really that different than the $30 ones at other beauty store?

They are different to when it comes to how straight you want your hair I think. My hair always came out shinier/straighter with chi or solia, rather than a hot tools. I really don't like any hot tools products IMO. They also break easily. I would say go for the more expensive ones-- they last longer, and better results !

Thanks Kalli....I really like the pink breast cancer one on the site you recommended. I'm looking into either that one, the one you mentioned (don't know if the regular solia is the same as the pink one), or the paul brown one I mentioned. What does heat level have to do with it? I was looking at two and one got up to 410 degrees hile the other was 450 degrees...I'm assuming going with the higher one is better right?

You can try the Japanese silk booster. It is really good, it helps your hair stay straight even in the most humid weather. You should only get it 2-3 times per year.

YES!!! I cannot say it loud enough! YES!

I personally use the T3. I tried the metropolitan, with good results. I actually thought it did was just as great!! But my hair kept getting snagged with it. The edges of the T3 are rounded (I got the medium one).

I used to use the 30 helen of troy one. Then a conair one. Then a hot tools one, etc. My hair got soooo damaged.

Some people may not agree with me here. But the following was told to me by a hairdresser I trust, and confirmed by my colorist whom I also trust.

You want to get the hottest one that you can. Don't listen to the people who say to put it on the lowest heat that's effective. Keep it the hottest it goes. The reason? On a low heat you need to go over your hair many times. With each pass you dry out and damage your hair more and more. When it's a super hot iron, you only need one pass, two on hard kinks, and three at the most!

Imagine a peice of meat. Cook it on low heat for a while and it will get well done (hair translation- dry). Put it one a super high heat for a couple of seconds? Outside cooked how you want and inside raw and still juicy (hair translation- smooth and straight shiny outside, not dried out inside).

I find that depending on use I need to get a new straightener every year and a half to two years. Same thing you're finding- it turns on and gets hot, but it's just not quite as effective...

I went just a month ago to Sephore to get a new tourmaline. I decided to try the domed duality one where you can curl or straighten. I really didn't like it. Exchanged it for my regular one. I can still flip the ends ends of my hair well with it...

Thanks so much everyone!!! You all are great...as always! I'm going to go ahead and order the Solia one that Kalli recommended, but I'm getting the breast cancer one - I'm a sucker for anything supporting this cause. There's always the sites return policy if I don't like it. Wish me luck...I'll let you know how it works for me

I know you will love it. I just got a CHI and can't believe I waited so long. The Solia has great reviews I was torn between that one and the CHI but just went ahead with what I've already used. You are sooooo gonna love your new iron.

I'm a hair stylist and I sort of agree with that... It really depends on the hair. If you have healthy, medium-dense textured hair, then crank up the heat. If you have fine, over processed, or heavily highlighted hair, then keep the heat setting to the minimum it takes to get it straight in one pass. For most of us, it's not the maximum 450 degrees that most quality flat irons heat up to.

But there is a difference in the quality and performance of a $30 flat iron vs. a $100+ one. The $30 one will have ceramic coated plates as opposed to solid ceramic, it may not heat up as hot, produce even heat throughout the plates, or heat up quickly.

With any heat styling, use a thermal protectant.

that said, you can find 100% solid ceramic straighteners for $20 round here. i have a $200 something GHD and a $20 alleged 'nasty' from a cheap store.

guess which one i use now?

Mr Naut pulled them apart to test them and prove a point to me...

identical plates in materials (i.e solid ceramic) (different colours)
    identical circuitry.

there is nothing more to them than plate & circuit. they can call them ionizing blah blah this, but it's the same old ceramic doo-dah they've had for years. some boffin just had the sense to put it in a fancy package and sell it to girls for huge prices.

the nasty ones with plated ceramic or metal are pretty lame. just be discriminating, when you're buying get solid ceramic and a top temp of 200C + (whatever it is in fahrenheit). expensive, in this case, doesn't mean best.

as he says, 'they're all coming out of the same box in china with a different brand and sticker'.

Just wondering if you know that many of the top of the line straighteners, like my FHI heat up in under a minute. Mine is 30 or 60 sec heat up, I can't remember. They also make a HUGE difference in how shiny your hair is once ironed (without shine drops I get more shine with my FHI than I get with them using a cheap iron), and how long it stays straight. I have to have an iron that is at least 400 degrees to straighten my hair, but I have never had to touch-up my hair unless I get rained on.
