    Default Drinking: Some advice

    Hey all...Happy new year...

As I sit here, sick from too much last night, I thought I would ask the advice of my fellow junkies...which my, because of general anonymity, might be the only group I can really ask about this.

Lately, in the past 6 months or so, I have been increasingly unable to to hold my liquor. I don't know why but the same amount of alcohol I drank a couple of years ago now does me in, big time. For example, Last night I had a glenlivit with dinner, a shot of patron before we went out, 2 mojitos, 2 glen livits and 6 shots of crown in the limo, a half bottle of wine and another glen livit in the wine bar and a shot of jamisons, midori sour, and a captains and coke in the dance club. That's only 18 drinks...in 6 hours with a full meal (filet, potatoes, brocolli, crab cocktail, lobster tail and lobster bisque with a lot of bread.) That is, in the greater history of my alcohol usage, a pretty tame night.

However, shortly after we left the dance club, at about 12:30ish, I blacked out. No memory until waking up this morning. I apparantly became quite ill and made quite a mess.

My question is this...why? Is it my age? (I am 33.5 years old.) Is the fact that I have lost about 10% of my body weight? (Stupid Diet (tm)) Could it be a function of the food poisoning I had about a month ago? I guess I am just looking for some experiences from some people older and wiser in the ways of the world than me...

Dude - just dude! That's like, a lot to drink.

I seriously think I would hurt myself; at the least I'd be all "I'm completely not responsible for my actions after this drink after. like, 3."

I get wasted on just 3 or 4 hard hard liquor drinks. Thats why I stick with beer. I know how many brewskis I can have before I get out of hand.

If you were previously good with that level of consumption of the hard stuff but now find that you black out, I can only assume age and your liver have finally caught up with you Pretty bad to peak out at 33-1/2, Gen You need to pace yourself, son

    LMAO, only 18 drinks.

The only time I have trouble now days seems to be when I mix my drinks like you did (drinking patron & wine & crown & glen livit & captains & .....). Have you always done that? I usually stick to one or two types of drinks myself and I usually have no problem.

LOL - Ah yea, that's a lot to drink, and I can hold my drinks just fine, but yea Gen, that's a lot! So much that I would just think you drank too much, but if you're saying you can normally do so, and have noticed a general decline in your ability to do so, then in all seriousness talk to your doctor about getting a liver panel done, and maybe a hepatitis panel (hepatitis, in it's various forms, can cause liver damage).

Ultimately it comes down to how fast the liver can metabolize the alcohol. If you're seeing a general decrease in your alcohol tolerance, that can be a sign that you're developing some liver problems (some times brought on excess drinking, but often reversible if dealt with early).

I don't want to kill your buzz man, but seriously, that's the advice I'd give a friend.

Wow, that's a tame night? Sweety, I don't mean to be a buzzkill, but you're going to need a liver transplant real soon if you try to keep that up!

Ok...perhaps it *IS* a lot. I normally only drink like that on "special" occasions...usually its just a couple of beers or glasses of wine. And no...I didn't go anywhere near Glen Livit with water or ice or anything...drank it straight.

I think I will talk to the doctor about the liver thing...I have a regular appt next week. And I guess I am going to have to take it easy in the future.

Sho was a good time, though. Especially for an event with no strippers

You drank too much. At any given time, its too much. Perhaps you are looking at previous hangovers with rose-colored shot glasses to justify binging again.

I drank only vodka and soda last night till I got to piercedickboy's house, and all he had was Crown. Suffice it to say, I felt awful all day! Happy new year, I'm back on the wagon!

Ideally, I prefer to drink various brands of scotch, bourbon, as well as some vodkas (e.g., "Pravda") on the ice or neat, but if you're plan is to get shit-faced drunk, and want no hangover, may I suggest redbull and vodka (since it will being going in redbull, go with the cheap stuff as you won't be able to taste it anyway). No hang over, and you can drink all night without getting the least bit sleepy. Of course redbull + vodka tastes like (what I would imagine) cherry flavored piss, but hey, that will discourage you from drinking too fast

I hate to say this, but a blackout is pretty much a guaranteed sign that you could become or are an alcoholic. It's what made me quit drinking over four years ago. Your problem is not that you can't hold your liquor, it's that you can hold far, far too much of it, and your body/brain will start to react to it differently with the onset of alcoholism.

Please take care of yourself and be careful. This is totally something you should ask your Dr. about especially if there's any liver disease/diabetes/alkies in the family -- that kind of shit is not good for your body, to start with.

Wow, Gen...18 drinks in six hours is a LOT, even (possibly especially?) with a full stomach of food. The equivalent of one drink an hour is the guideline for being "legally" drunk, so if triple the legal limit is a "tame" night for you, I'd be worried.

And as for blackouts, I had one in my life, a little over seven years ago. Coming out of it scared the daylights out of me, and I always say that I can laugh about it now ONLY because I lived. (I had six or seven double-shots of hard liquor in a four-hour period, plus I ate about a pound of beef at dinner.)

From then on, if I absolutely felt like drinking alcohol, I have made sure I was drinking water with at least every other drink, if I wanted to keep the spirits coming.

Although they are finding out that regular drinkers often metabolize alcohol faster, when you drink 3 drinks an hour over 6 hours, it's much worse then being 3x as drunk.

    Hour 1: Metabolize 1 + 2 drinks behind.
Hour 2: Metabolize 1 + 4 drinks behind. (2 behind to start, -1 more metabolized + add 3 more = 4 behind, and so on below)
    Hour 3: Metabolize 1 + 6 drinks behind.
    Hour 4: Metabolize 1 + 8 drinks behind.
    Hour 5: Metabolize 1 + 10 drinks behind.
    Hour 6: Metabolize 1 + 12 drinks behind.

If that doesn't make sense, read it again, eventually it will sink in why your body gets farther and farther behind.

And yes, that's a lot of alcohol in the blood, blood levels similar to downing 12 shots back to back in the 6th hour.

If you blacked out, how do you remember what you drank? Perhaps you had EVEN more than you recall. Having a full stomach doesn't mean much. "Lining the stomach" is somewhat of a myth. The alcohol is being absorbed into the capillaries every step of the way. Actually, it was probably sitting there poisining your stomach waiting to get into your intestines, which was full of heavy food that's tough to process.

All in all, a night of overindulgence. Don't try to justify it, just admit your lost to the beast.

I've been drunk enough where I forgot some of the details of the evening. Is that a problem? Well technically yes, however it's been at least 20 years since I've puked or blacked out. The truth is of course that many of us our alcoholics, but on a big grey scale from mild to severe. If you drink 18 drinks in one night once every few years, no biggie, but if you're drinking like that a few times a year, well ... you know.

You know me, Kat, I remember everything in ridiculous detail. Seriously, I was with a group of friends who recounted in great detail all the horrible things I did for every moment from the point I blacked out until the point I woke up. None of it included any additional drinking...From the point at which I hit the ice (It was raining ice that night and I slipped coming out of the dance club. That is my last memory.) until waking up, I know everything I did. Sadly, there are even some pictures.

And there is the issue of medication, too. Gen is probably too young to worry about this right now but it can creep up on you before you know it. I'm at the age where I have to take a few meds to keep me around. Recently, some issues have come up with my CBC. To the point where I had to visit a hematologist today. Long story short, he bitch slapped me around and pretty much told me if I want to be around 10 years from now to enjoy my grandkids and so forth, I need to cut way back. And all I drink is beer and in my view, not that much. So while it can be a chuckle when you are young (hahahah man, I really got fucked up last night) at some point someone can really put the fear of god in you.

Jeez, 18 drinks! Wow! I lose it after 3. I don't even drink at the club. Too many risks (most of them in the form of police cruisers that keep a close eye on the place).

I agree with most of the others. Age, past drinking, illness, nutrition, age, past drinking, and age all do damage. Do get thoroughly tested. Do consider some professional help. Consider a "liver cleanse" from a good herbologist. But ultimately sustained drinking will all by itself cause enough liver damage that even if you don't immediately notice a reduction in alcohol tolerance, will still increase the severity of reactions and further decline.

One family member doesn't drink nearly as much as you, but I've watched as her occasional wine binges have done damage and make subsequent binges more damaging, with her getting sick more easily and severely. She has increasingly complained of exhaustion. And another family member has been an alcoholic for years, to the point where he is barely functional after about 11am and has done considerable harm to his family. It is not a pretty picture.

Good luck, man. I hope to see you in Colorado this summer, but I hope to see you healthy!

Thats hella alcohol, that much would probably send me to the hospital to have my stomach pumped! I have like 2 mojitos at pf changs and I am done, tipsy and all. But I did graduate from professional bartending school, and if your going to down that much heres a few tips; before drinking have 1 tbs. of olive oil to coat your stomach, and before you pass out (sleep) take 1 vitamin C and 2 vitamin B's. you wont wake up feeling shitty, just tired. ........Drink on!

If I'd had that much to drink, I'd be in a coma. Three years ago I was with a friend and his wife and drank 12 Coors light beers. Next day, all day I was sick and vomiting. Haven't been able to drink since. Two beers and I start getting a headache and have to quit. Pretty much have had to give up alcohol all together.

Went to the doctor to see if anything was wrong. Everything checked out. Said sometimes you just lose your tolerance for alcohol. I guess it’s not a bad thing. Don’t give DUIs a second thought anymore. I’m always the designated driver when I’m out with friends. Parties aren’t as much fun as they used to be. Drunks can be so annoying when you’re sober.

Please stop drinking so much. It's excessive. Excess is a college-age person's game, to be abandoned with the wisdom that comes with growing the fuck up. Learn to be satisfied with other pleasures and a much lesser amount of alcohol. Before it kills you or makes you chronically ill. Goddammit.
