    Smiley Whoo-hoo I got a bartending job!!

I called a few bars today, and called back a few of the bars that I'd placed an application at. Well, I happened to call at the right time...I called a bar, and the GM answered. He told me that he'd just gotten a few apps, didn't have time to look over them, and to stop by because he wasn't at the bar very often(he owns a few other bars in the area). He told me that I could stop by then, and there was no need to "doll myself up."(which meant, that I should wear casual yet sexy clothing to show that I'm attractive) So I went down there, wear a cleavage-bearing tank top with a sweater cardigan, and he hired me after talking to me for a few minutes!! This is one of the first times that I've had this kind of luck with jobs!(the other time was when I got hired at the insurance office this summer) I'm gonna start training this Friday. I'm so excited! For a while there, I was getting really worried that I wouldn't find a job.

I was starting to seriously consider bartending school(the school has a good reputation for finding people some really good jobs), but the only thing I have to pay for it is a credit card(and I've racked up tons of credit card debt in the last month, because I stopped dancing and I had to buy Christmas presents and living expenses). I was worried that if I paid for bartending school and completed it, what if I didn't find a job afterwards and I was put in the same situation as I was when I went to college and didn't find a job but left with all kinds of debt? So now I don't need to go. I might still go to bartending school eventually if I feel the need to learn more and make more complex drinks(a SW friend of mine told me that he heard that most bartenders go to school after they've had a job or two, to become better bartenders...NOT to start off). But for now, I can see where this job takes me. The manager said that it gets really busy on Thursday nights. I used to go there a few years ago, and I remember some nights being dead, and some being pretty packed. I hope I make a lot of money!

So hopefully this will work out!! I'm excited, because I've been looking for a way to pay my living expenses(other than credit cards) without dancing. Not that dancing is bad or anything, but I was getting burned out and I don't have the hard-hustling mentality that dancing requires to make a lot of money(in other words, I realized after some time that dancing wasn't really "me"). What a way to start off the new year!! Hopefully 07 will be better than 06!

I knew you could do it!!!! Congratulations!

And no, you don't need to go to school now.

Get yourself over to webtender.com and you'll find all the ingredient lists you'll ever need as well as a wealth of other information.

Best advice I could give you is to make anagrams. You might be used to this since it's not that long since you've been in school.

    For example:

    Kamikazee = Very Tragic Landing
    Vodka
    Triple Sec
    Lime Juice

You'll only need to do this for awhile because it's really just a learning tool for beginners. As you get more experienced, you'll just remember.

And another trick if you don't remember is to say to the customer "I know a few ways to make that, how do you like yours?". Saved my butt a bunch of times.

    Good luck and HAVE FUN!!!

Yep, this saved my butt as well. You'll also find that you get some "foreigners" (people from other states) who order a drink and you don't know what it is...until you find out that the ingredients are the same to a drink you always make (cobre libre...I think that's the spelling--is the same as a rum and coke with lime).

And, you'll probably never have to go to school. I bartended for 7 years and never went to bartending school and I made BANK as a bartender. Its not about what you know about drink making...but how efficient you are at getting your drinks out, orders right, and how well you flirt.

That drives me nuts, lol. Just like the Cubra Libre is just a darn rum and coke, a Vodka and Cranberry with a lime is called a Cape Cod.

i think you'll be fine once your behind the bar... just get a little bar recipe book and keep it behind the bar until you get good at memorizing things.... Seriously i learned to bartend by simply being thrown behind the bar on my own to serve people.. haha..

Thanks guys! I hope I do okay. I think I will, and the manager has faith in me that I'll do well. I tried my best to be friendly and outgoing today when I spoke with him...which, although I'm a normally outgoing/social person, is hard for me to do when facing people of authority such as employers. I think one of the things that really helped me out, was wearing a top that accentuated my boobs. LOL the manager kept staring at my boobs and he even complimented them a few times! It's a bar where a lot of blue-collar guys go to...usually middle-aged men or college/post-college aged guys...so the manager probably thought I'd be good for attracting the guys. (Yet another experience that taught me that my breast implants were a better investment than my college education! LOL. Although I do not like what my college did for me, I do admit that I'm glad I went to college, though.)

^^^It's a blue collar bar? Then you'll have NO problem there hon. Shots and beers all around!

Seriously, though, that's the best atmosphere to learn in. Lets you get comfy behind the stick before you have to go mixing something exotic.

^ Make sure you PM Chrissy with that info...wouldn't want Ray Gordon to get that info and start harassing you...

congrats! I've had a few bartenders ask me what was in a drink I ordered or ask a friend I was with so I'm sure they all get stumped when they start out and it's no big deal. I'm sure you'll do great!

Another good way to remember drinks is finding "patterns" in them. For example some drinks are the same as another drink but with one ingredient changed. A Screwdriver is Vodka and OJ, and a Harvey Wallbanger is a Screwdriver with Galliano on top. A Shang-Hi sling is the same as a Singapore Sling but is made with Whisky instead of Gin. A Rob Roy is the same as a Manhatten but with Scotch instead of bourbon or rye.

It is true that some drinks are regional. In Canada if you go to a bar and order a vodka slime you'll get vodka, lime, and 7up. In Saskatchewan for some reason no one knows what the hell a vodka slime is, they call it a Vodka Special. Theres another pattern for you. A Candy Apple is a Vodka Slime with grenadine on top.
