    Default Boxster-S or Cayman-S??

Okay, if you're not a Porsche fan or don't get the appeal of sports cars, well you can ignore this post. I've been a Porsche fan and owner of some older models since I started driving. Now I'm doing some serious shopping for next years car. It's coming down to:

    or

Yes, this means less free money to spend on strippers, but sacrifices have to be made. So hard top? or soft top? That's the question.

I know it's silly to be practical in a sports car, but here's my opinion.

If you want to go longer without repairs, go with the hard top. The soft top will get torn up from PA winters.

If you don't care and the car will be garaged in the winter, go soft top. Since they both have the same specs, I guess the top is the determining factor. If you're wanting personal opinions, I'd pick the hard top; looks more sharp and classy to me.

Thanks Corsica, that's the kind of input I was hoping for.

FWIW, it will be garaged in the Winter. I have a 4 wheel drive beater for the winters around here. They salt the roads with a mix of gravel and salt in PA. The gravel will destroy the paint on any car.

I agree about the classy look of the hard-top, and like the intimate feeling of it when the windows are rolled up and the outside noise is blocked out, but OTOH the option to put the top down in the summer appeals to me too. I test drove both last weekend, the difference in price is such a small fraction of the total price it's irrelevant. I'm torn. Both appeal to me.

I like the Cayman-S too, it looks a lot sportier. I owned a convertible once, granted it was a Mustang and not a Porsche, but still I doubt I'll buy another, I didn't take the top down nearly as much as I had anticipated I would, the insurance rates were also higher.

I'd prefer the convertible. Although when I had one, the times it was comfortable having the roof down were few and far between. Had a 944S one time and absolutely loved it. After a couple of years, I upgraded to a 911 Turbo. Having to be towed in didn't really bother me that much when it broke down and neither the joke about the difference between Porsches and porcupines. It was when someone keyed it in a parking lot that I decided fuck having an expensive car. Been driving a Taurus ever since.

I think either would be badass but Id go with the convertible since it will be your toy. And women seem to enjoy drop tops.

Once again I have embraced my addiction and have put off the moral dilemma to another day.

Yea, my friend that just bought the Corvette Z06* decided to keep his old twin-turbo MR2 for more or less that reason. When he has to park in crappier sections of the city, he drives the MR2. I also keep a four wheel drive beater for the winters and for those times that I need drive into certain parts of Philadelphia. The beater has been keyed twice - go figure.

Of course you can only worry about it so much. Life is full of risks, and short - got to enjoy some of it. Fortunately my S.O. understands and approves of my car fetish (well, I should say she doesn't disapprove, as I was driving sports cars when we first met, she knows I love cars). I save money in other areas so it balances out I guess.

    * BTW my friend really loves his Z06. He has had it for about 3 months now. He likes the responsive feel of the Porsche (and his MR2) better, but he is loving the raw power of the Vette. As he puts it, it is "scary" fast.

I decided to forgo having a fast car and got a fast boat instead. My baby is 33' long with twin 505s. Instead of talking MPG, its GPM, sits unused for 6 months a year, and cost more than the house I bought 10 years ago.

I go through a lot of cars in my business. The single coolest "best bang for the buck" was a used Dodge Viper. Everybody loves Vipers. You can buy one for $42K or less but it looks like a 100K car. I have cars that are 100-250K and the little blue Viper takes the cake for the "cool" factor.
