    Default Horse Opportunity

I just got a phone call from a friend that 20 Arabians will be slaughtered at the end of the week and are free to good homes. She offered to board one for me (I pay for food and help out with feedings of their horse and of course bills incurred by mine) if I'd like.
Owning a horse is a lifelong dream. I had one when I was young (Arabian too!) and I want to do this so badly. I'm just worried I'm making a rash, selfish decision. I work at a bakery and go to school full time. Obviously there's a a huge time commitment, but there is the financial side too. But then I tell myself, I could go dance even just once a week to take care of things.

    Ugh.

I want to call her and say YES!!

Sounds like you have to decide whether it's worth it to spend the time taking care of the horse - and dancing once a week to pay for the horse - while you also have another job and full-time school. That does sound like a busy schedule and a big commitment. It sounds like a horse would make you really happy. And the opportunity to save a beautiful Arabian seems like it would be once-in-a-lifetime.

    Good luck!

Oh dear, I'd have to go to the slaughterhouse tomorrow and pick one out.

Damn. That's not very long to decide. I would say go with what your heart tells you. And don't dance if you don't want to.

Oh no, dancing isn't an issue, except for fitting it in my schedule! But thank you for the kind words!

I called the lady and am waiting for a call back as to the location. Turns out a widow on a ranch died and no one knew. She left about 60 horses on their own until a neighbor noticed they were looking sick. The neighbor took them in and nursed them back to health and needs to get rid of them. Apparently there's a mix of Arabian, Friesian and Andalusian horses available.

I have a friend who owns a few horses in pennsylvania. If "shipping" the horse could help be arranged by whomever is in charge over there, she'll most prob take one in. After you talk to the lady, post more info.

To ease the financial and time burden how about leasing the horse out once you get it. I leased one at the barn I take lessons at. I would go out four days a week, clean the stall, feed etc. I rode her when I wnated to and even had the opportunity to show. I payed the owner $200 a month wich helped her with board and feed, all vet bills were here responsibilaty.

Maybe, either there or TD's East probably. I have friends at Curves and TD's West, but it's just too far away. Especially with me and the horse on the far east side.

The horses are free. And I'm currently waiting for the exact when and where's. General where is Tucson, AZ though.

CS prices may be the lowest in Tucson, but it's always busy there. Not so with TD's East.

I agree that you could hold onto it for a while, and then try to sell/ give it away to a responsible owner somewhere. I did that once for an Arab dam and foal. I needed to take care of them for a while first though, because they were all wormy, and very underweight. Probably a good idea just to get an initial vet check when you first get them (in case of worms or whatever). Chances are, if they were going to slaughter, they're not in the best of shape. Also, doubtful they're even halter broken (otherwise leasing would be a good idea- that's what I do to cut down costs for my horse while I'm in school).

Damn, I would so get one of those horses!!!! One of each.

I'll put the word out around here if they are willing to do some kind of shipping arrangement.

I had lined up a trailer, truck to pull the trailer, boarding (for free) and the lady never called me. I've called her, my mother's called her and we've left messages. She's not picking up and not calling me back like she said the first time we spoke.

This sucks!! I'm so heartbroken. I not only wanted a horse, but I would have loved to save a life too.

The upside is that while I was trying to track down other rescuers that might know where the horses were, I found a rehabilitation/rescue organization that I want to volunteer for. And of course, if the opportunity comes again, I'm prepared now!

If the woman gets back to you, would you let me know? I might be interested in boarding a free horse for the kids...and the saving a life thing works too.
Of course since I'm a city boy, I have ABSOLUTELY no idea what goes into boardin a horse(expenses etc) but I'm willin to learn. If nothin else maybe you and I can share the expense.

(If it falls through, though. There are lots of rescued horses that need homes up on petfinder.com)
