You could do container gardening (flower pots) if you are an apartment dweller. Growing your own herbs, or chiles, tomatoes, and a few other goodies.

Thanks for the link... very cool!

I grow some of my own spices and stuff but actual food is hard- at least for me. I'm trying to learn to do it better.

I have a black thumb too! I swear, if I go to a nursery and even go near the plants, they start shaking uncontrollably.

I did tomatoes in containers last year. In the past I did peppers and cukes too.

Have you ever (or anyone else here) done the upside down hanging container thing? They would be perfect for my balcony and I'm wondering if they really work.

I never thought about growing in my apartment. I've always wanted to have a garden though. Maybe I could start early

I've never been able to grow anything indoors. I even killed a philodendron, which is pretty hard to do. But outdoors I'm pretty good... I used to live in a townhouse where I had a little land, and I grew cayenne peppers all around the front door. In the back I had a huge herb garden and I also grew strawberries. I'd like to have enough land to have a huge kitchen garden one day... I never really trust anyone's food but my own.

If you have a sunny corner of your back yard you can also tire garden which is awesome for potatoes and a few other root vegetables.

Try adding some vegetables and herbs to flower gardens around your home. Why spend all that time watering and weeding when you can enjoy fresh food on the table too.

Nope I can't say that I have. I just used good size plastic containers (empty pickle buckets from resturaunts are the ideal size if you're looking to do it cheap).

I love gardening...will be planting again in a couple of months. Also going to be getting rid of a bunch of "junk" trees and replacing them with apple trees.

I was thinking on this a minute. I have to say .......... YES! totally possibly since the tomatoe plants can be started on a warm window sill until nightime temps are high enough that a frost doesn't kill them. You can also grow cilantro, lemon grass, parsley and a few other herbs on a sunny window sill. If you get five gallon buckets from the bakery you will have free planters for bigger plants. Clean soil and water. Fun too.

If I didn't live in NYC then I would be growing my own veggies organically. Take advantage if you care about your health and don't live in a major city. Grow your own food.

I've grown my own....things. Not edibles. Unless you bake it in a brownie, that is.

Thought I would remind everyone that Spring is here! Fresh greens by you! Food is going to become very expensive in 2007 with the ethanol industy starting up. So prepare to feed yourself and with REAL food too. Wouldn't hurt to buy a vacuum sealer of some type to take advantage of sales.

Hey, thanx AmSgt, you cutie pie! Last year, I grew lovely flowers, from seed I many unusual birds & butterflies check'in 'em out. Melonie, that's awesome!!!
This year, I want to concentrate more on veggies, since they are sooo damn expen$ive! I already bought a small tomato plant, & plan to get more vegs. I live right near a nursery/plant store, I'll go early b/4 the yuppie f*ck overrun the place.

For the "black thumb" crowd in particular, you might try the following

    http://www.backyardnature.net/simple/alf-spr.htm

    http://www.reachoutmichigan.org/fune...fasprouts.html

My mother had me doing this when I was around seven or eight. Much more humble "equipment," though...a couple of old cottage cheese containers, a couple of paper towels on the bottom, and cheesecloth on the top of the contained held in place with a rubber band. Really tasty in sandwiches.

Well, I just finished roto-tilling my 12 ft by 200 ft garden plot. Tomorrow, it's off to ACE Hardware's garden center with a borrowed pickup truck for about 600lb of humus, and then another go with the roto-tiller.

I'm also going to take a 'chance' this year, based on recommendations of the lunar gardening calendar and the old farmer's almanac, and plant my beets, carrots, radishes, lettuce, corn and maybe potatoes on monday. This is a bit chancey since my area has been known to have frosts well into May, but these hardy / root plants shouldn't have any huge problems with a few cold nights before the seeds sprout. However, last year I waited until memorial day to plant stuff to be absolutely sure there wouldn't be a killing frost, but I got cut short on 'growing days' and didn't get at least 1/3rd of the yield that I should have been able to get.

My more delicate stuff i.e. tomatoes, blueberries, peppers etc. as well as my herbs i.e. echinacea, dill, foxglove, etc. will have to wait at least another 2 weeks. However, I have been growing baby plants on my sunporch in starter trays for about a month now, so that I'll actually be transplanting seedlings that have already grown to 2-3-4" high into my garden once there isn't any further risk of a frost.

One new item this year will be a couple of those 'tomato trees'. I'm usually a 'purist' in regard to hybrid varieties, but with the way fresh produce prices are skyrocketing, I'd rather have too many tomatoes rather than too few. If I really get overwhelmed, I can always whip up a ton of homemade tomato sauce and can it in the fall. But just to be safe, I'll be planting these a long distance away from my Roma's and Cherry tomatoes !

And I've been using my two new AeroGardens to grow my more exotic herbs (no, not THAT kind of exotic herb LOL - been there done that, and my cat always 'harvests' the plants before I can !). They're just getting started, but it looks like things are growing significantly faster than with the 'normal' method. I'm a bit pissed at the AeroGarden people though, because I'm still stuck purchasing their seed kits instead of being able to load up my own seeds. They have been promising a 'master gardener's kit' that will start shipping this month which works with any kind of seeds that you want to plant, but so far these kits haven't become available.

I would love to have a vegetable and herb garden when I have more room...well ANY room would be nice. Our windowsills are too small for an herb box, even. I hate not being around plants. I'm always drooling over other peoples' lawns and gardens when I take my daily walks.
It can't be that hard to grow food, can it? My mom is kind of a ditz and she managed to grow chives and tomatoes (amongst other things).
