    Default UTIs?

I just peed and it was pretty uncomfortable, though I will have to wait until pee #2 takes place to know for certain, but I think I feel a UTI coming on. GOD DAMN IT!!! Can anyone recommend any over the counter/home remedies, at least for the discomfort/pain associated with the infection? Day #4 without health insurance and of course I am sick.

AZO and Uristat work well for me, both have a pain reliever for the bladder area and are over the counter. They say drinking cranberry juice helps with a UTI, not the pain aspect but helps it go away faster.

Make sure it is PURE cranberry juice (no sugar added). You can get it at health food stores, some grocery stores have it. They also make cranberry pills if you can't stand the bitter taste of unsweetened cranberry.

Make sure you drink at least 8 glasses of water a day to flush out any bacteria. You might be able to flush it out before it becomes a full fledged infection if it is one. This really helps, seriously.

ural or any other similar product that neutralises the acid in urine.
this might sound a little disgusting but my doctor suggested once when i had one that it is less painful to urinate if u have a long hot bath and try to urinate while u r in there
and yes as AlexxaHex said drink heaps of water.

thank you everyone! I am sititng here alternating between cranberry and water, and surprisingly my doctor agreed to call in a prescription for me without me visiting the offce. I'm going to pick up some uristat now. Im honestly not feeling as crappy as I have before with UTIs so hopefully the infection is not too bad/didnt spread yet or whatever. I hope I dont jinx it by speaking too soon.

Uristat never works for me. AZO-Standard works very well, but just be sure to wear a pantyliner because it will stain your undies bright orange. Yes, drink gallons and gallons of water and cranberry juice, but if it doesn't go away within the next two days or it starts getting worse, you're going to need an antibiotic.

I used to get these constantly until I figured out that they were being caused by floating tampon strings. I started cutting off the string and keeping it tucked away, and no more UTI's. The string was carrying bacteria from my ass and vagina right to my urethra, and causing infections.

My gynie at Planned Parenthood says it's like having your tubes tied except that it is reversable.
I have never had any babie but I would do more research in it before I did the go ahead and actually did it.

    Huh???

Anyway, yes, do the cranberry juice. My Gyno will call in a script for a UTI for me too without having to go in. Don't drink anything with carbonation, take the antibiotics, and drink tons of cranberry juice/water. Get the cranberry pills too, you can take them daily to help prevent UTI's. I used to get them every 2 months or so

Whoa, maybe that's how I'm getting them! Thanks Yekh.

Well, my doctor informed me that alcohol does not help flush out a UTI. Seriously, I used to think that drinking booze would help because it makes you pee alot.

Uva Ursi tea. I'm the Uva Ursi pimp, I believe in it! It's also called Bearberry. I used to have UTIs that nothing could help, then my naturopath recommended the tea. You should be able to find at leats a tincture at your local health food store.

Cystex--its got something to soothe the pain and also something that prevents the infection from spreading.

Take cranberry capsules--more potent than juice. Also, yogurt, and AZO. Always pee after sex!

As someone who has to be prepared for UTIs due to working with sex toys (usually that's how I get them even tho' I make sure they are disinfected before each use).... here are my tips:

    http://www.mothernature.com/Library/...oks/19/234.cfm

    From the above URL:

Fix yourself a baking soda cocktail. "At the first sign of symptoms, mix half a teaspoon of baking soda in an eight-ounce glass of water and drink it," says Kristene E. Whitmore, M.D., chief of urology and director of the Incontinence Center at Graduate Hospital in Philadelphia. The baking soda raises the pH (acid-base balance) of irritating, acidic urine.

Drink water, on the hour. Drink one glass of water every hour for eight hours, continues Dr. Whitmore.

"Drinking a lot of fluids will increase urine flow," explains Dr. Workowski. "This will wash out the bacteria that are attempting to adhere to the cells lining your urethra. Drinking plenty of water will also help dilute and flush out the substances that are causing the irritation. Drink enough water so that your urine is clear. Aim for at least eight or ten glasses of water a day."

"Hydration is the best thing that you can do for a UTI," adds Dr. Whitmore. "Drinking water is fashionable, it's good for you and women I treat say that it's more effective than drug treatment."

Carry a bike bottle with you. So suggests Jean Kallhoff, advanced registered nurse practitioner at the Urology Clinic at the University of Washington Medical Center in Seattle. "It's handy, it's easy to carry and it reminds women to drink water throughout the day."

Nix other offenders. Whether you have a simple irritation or an infected urinary tract, the last thing that you need are known bladder irritants. The most notorious bladder irritants are citrus, tomatoes, aged cheeses, chocolate, spicy foods, caffeine, alcohol and nicotine, says Dr. Whitmore.

Wear skirts, loose pants and knee-highs. "If you have an infection, wearing tight undergarments and jeans forces the bacteria that normally line your vaginal area up into your urine tube," says Dr. Workowski. If you have an irritation, constrictive clothing can cause pain and discomfort, because it presses against the already inflamed urethral opening. I have no idea if this particular product is available near you however I swear by it to stop the infections as well as to reduce how long the infections stay (usually only three days or less): http://www.pharmacyonline.com.au/uri...nt-p-6619.html

i reiterate... ALWAYS pee after sex.

Cyostic (or cystic) can't remember the spelling. Its an antibiodic along with a pain reliever so I don't have to call the doctor everytime I get one (about once a month). It also doesn't turn to pee orange (sorry for being graphic)

yep! I never did, and I got a bladder infection (never had one before, nor a uti) and the stress of it on my body and my subsequent fall (I passed out due to the pain) caused my miscarriage.

One of the nurses at PP also said that wearing thongs can transmit bacteria from your anus to your vagina and urethra.
I stopped wearing them at work, only wearing full back shorts (which are hotter to me anyway) or no panties if I was wearing a long skirt. I had a lot less irritation at the end of the night, and less frequent yeast infections too.

Alcohol and caffeine should be avoided because they dehydrate you.

You can sweeten the juice safely with Stevia (non-irritating, natural, no calories, and no sugar, yay!), and dilute it with water to make it taste better! I'm told sugar feeds the bacteria and makes it worse, artificial sweeteners are also bad, sweetened with apple juice is better than sweetened with sugar or high fructose corn syrup (which is horrible for you anyway), but no sugar is best.

I had a bladder infection and never got antibiotics since I was working for this nazi-incarnate and had no insurance....turned into a NASTY kidney infection which subsequently landed me in ER so now I have a $2500 debt to the hospital. It was sooooo very painful that I will *never* mess around with that again....I pee after sex, I can't do certain positions where my urinary tract is irritated and I will always get antibiotics ASAP.

Uh, just thinking abt it makes me wanna pass out....

Hey. I had a mild uti or something about 2 months ago but it went away quick. Now i feel the burning again and this began when i started using apple cider vinegar. I took 2 teaspoons straight grovery store kind. Does this sound like it could be the cause? I never had any bad infections to the point where i needed antibiotics but it is definitively a little irritating?

Geezus I HATE those things!! I used to be prone to them, but I've taken great pains to prevent them for the last three years, and I haven't had one since!
I take a cranberry pill everyday. The juice contains so much sugar usually and you have to practically drown yourself for it to work.
It's possible if you start taking pills now and drown yourself in the juice that it will go away. Nature stores have concentrated juice with no sugar too.
I also sit an extra minute on the toilet to make sure every drop of urine is out of my bladder and I use non scented baby wipes (I carry them everywhere:p )
I'm sure you know this, but ALWAYS urinate after sex AND if you feel the need to go in the middle of the night, try your best to make yourself get up and go.
One more thing, I get interstitial cystitis (feels like uti, but it's not) when I masturbate. I only get it from clit stimulation, so I can't randomly rub one out....I have to use my vibrator on the G spot.
I hope this helps some. I have alot of experience with those damned UTI's.
