Default What are your foolproof falling asleep tips?

I need them!!!! I only slept 3 hours last night (normal is 4 1/2 to 6), and I have to get up at 9ish for class. I'm trying, but I can't sleep, so I'm here. I was laying down for a while... 45ish minutes, but it's discouraging, since I just cannot seem to fall asleep.

I suppose you are alone? There are so many great suggestions I had if your b/f were with you! Or if you had your toys available....

OK, take a long bath or shower. Have a glass or two of wine. Make sure your room is quiet and dark. A full body massage works wonders.

I have some pharmaceuticals guaranteed to knock you out, but the suggestions above are a decent start....

Well I'm freakish in the sleep department... but not including medication...

Every few weeks I switch positions of my head on the bed. I sleep with my head at the foot of the bed. Changing where you sleep on the bed can work, but not if you do it every day.

Certain scents calm me down. Yay incense.

I listen to calming music before I sleep. Ambient stuff, meditational music....

I don't read much, cause for me, that keeps me up to read more.

5-HTP helped me sleep a lil at one point.... so did Valerian.

I change the wallpaper on my computer a lot... very calming pictures, or meditational images. (I make a lot of them, if anyone wants any)

I cannot atest to this, but I hear that listening to a book on tape/CD helps people fall asleep. The scent of lavender is supposed to help, too.

Close your eyes and then move your eyeballs around--side to side, up and down, in a smooth, relaxed manner. It tricks your brain into thinking it is in REM sleep, and you immediately feel relaxed. Sleep follows quickly. Sounds bizarre, but I swear by it on those nights I have trouble falling asleep.

I have heard melatonin can help you fall asleep.

I also change sleeping at the head and foot of my bed. Strange, but it works for me.
A hot bath works great. as does masturbation.
    eat some turkey!
Start dreaming, This is what I do every night to fall asleep. I get a good dream going, about whatever. And not only do I fall alseep faster, but I continue the dream I started while i was awake.

I thought you fell asleep to Pooka's face on your wallpaper every night! I'ma cry now! Haha. I have freakish sleep patterns too. I can only get more than 3 hours of sleep every other night. Otherwise Its impossible. If I drink two glasses of red wine and then make it pitch black in my room with just a little white noise of some kind - the fan on or the computer running or the radio set really low between two stations, then start making up a story in my head - just something random that will keep my mind from wandering to to do lists, usualy I can fall asleep pretty quick.

Lately for me, all it takes is a pillow and a blanket. LOL

We take tea that has Magnesium and Calcium in it.

Studies show that when you are under stress, it depeletes these minerals in your body and restoring them will help you sleep better. I don't know how true that is, but it sure does help me sleep when I can't.

A tall glass of cold milk (skim is fine) with a big dollop of Kahlua mixed in.

Marvelously delicious, full of calcium, and it always knocks me out in minutes.

Hee, I was JUST talking about this, though since I'm a goofball, it didn't come out NEARLY as bad as it sounded in my head.

I used to have the hardest time sleeping, it was weird, my mind would just race through EVERYTHING and I couldn't be at peace.

So what I did, oh man, I'm actually smiling.

When I lay down, I pick a fantasy... i.e. something involving supppperrrr poweeeerrrsss and I get into an imaginary battle... somewhere along the way I get my ass handed to me and I end up lying there tired with nary the strength to get up and just wanting to pass out mimicking exactly how I'm laying there. Then I sleep. More often then not it follows me into the dream world, but otherwise I wake up with the sense of urgency that I NEED to get up.

And at 5:00am it's damn near crucial... unfortunately for those witnessing, I am as high energy the moment I get up as I am the moment I place head on the pillow....

Honestly, the other owner is much more mutually beneficial... I just really like my dreams...

I tried this one last night...it's the last thing I remember doing, so I think it worked!

If this is not too often, i would not worry. We all have nights when we can't turn the brain off.

The best i have found is keep computers out of the room and TV's.

The bedroom should be for sex and sleep only. This trains the brain to respond to this. A cool room is good. A warm bath (not shower) before bed. No food 2 hours before bed. Or drink.

    Should pass.

    Good luck.

cameronfl and echo, can you tell me a bit about ambien?? I have the WORST time falling/staying asleep (i mean i don't get tired till around 7:30am and if i do manage to knock myself out with Tylenol PM i wake up 2 hours later...its terrible) I've always been kinda cautious about asking for prescription sleeping pills.

Nothing seems to work 100% for me... Sometimes sleeping with my head at the foot of the bed helps..also smoking a blunt or two seems to have a nice "calm/happy" effect. hahaha. ;-)

    1. cut out caffine 10 hours before you want to sleep.
    2. Don't drink alcohol! It actually distrupts sleep patterns.
    3. Do not allow anyone to sleep with you on those nights. Someone snoring/ tossing and turning can be disruptive to an insomniac. This also includes pets.
    4. Create white noise. We are inundated with niose 24/7 with traffic, dogs barking, neighbors etc. Turn on a fan in the bathroom, buy a clock radio with relaxing sounds like rain or waves.
    5. Darken your room if you sleep while the sun is up. Your body naturally wants to wake when it is light. If you don't have dark curtains, then some cardboard placed over your windows should do the trick.
    6. Using Melatonin or other natural sleep aides are helpful to some people.
    7. Chamomile tea before bed could be helpful.
    8. Try some OTC sleep aides before moving on to the perscription kind. But these are habit forming, so only use them occasionally
    9. Read. I like to read boring fluff like trashy romance novels. I'm nodding off in no time. I recommend that you avoid thrillers or mystery stories.
    10. If you smoke marajuana, be sure you are getting the Indica. Sativa can have an energizing effect on people.
