Hmmm, I am a bit of an insomniac, especially in warm/hot weather. when I need to, I pop a couple of sleeping pills, have a hot mug of Neo-Citrin followed by a small glass of wine. Then I crawl into bed and see if I can't "rub one out" before I fall asleep....either way, I win.

*I know that I shouldn't mix sleep aids with alcohol, or take an extra sedative...I just have such a high tolerance, I need the extra downer!

Being active during the day also really helps insomnia.

I haven't had insomnia for years though...I kind of have the opposite problem, where I can't always stay awake. Has anyone else almost fallen asleep lapdancing? (and I don't even drink!).

And I took benadryl once in my life for mosquito bite itchiness (this summer), and I literally couldn't fight to stay conscious. I passed out against my will!

Sometimes I joke that I'm a narcoleptic. And by joke, I mean lie to people for attention (ain't stripping great for that?). I doubt it though. I only fall asleep against my will once in a while, and usually it's because I've taken some sleep inducing substance, or I'm sleep deprived, or the lecture is omigodsoboring.

I have a space heater fan that I set on a timer so it shuts off an hour after I've turned it on..I fall asleep to that noise, and also if I can't sleep, t his is stupid but, I imagine what I'd do if I won the powerball or something similar (impossible) like that...th elist goes on and eventually I am asleep.

Well, I eventually fell asleep, at anout 7, then got up at 9-40. Lola needs more sleep!!!! I've been having insomnia problems for about a month, can it be caused by depression? Normally when I'm sad, all I can do is sleep, but now I want to, yet it's almost impossible.

I'm going to write a list of the tips that will pertain to me, so it's easier (hopefully).

thanks everyone!!! Hopefully tonight will be more productive

Ambien CR is great. I constantly travel across time zones and have to be in good form when I arirve. I sleep very well, all night long in strange beds.

I have been an insomniac since High School eand this is the best thing I have ever found

okay ambien CR didnt work for me, at ALL-- i just went kinda nuts and once i had an emergency after i took it, and i couldnt even stand up straight, lol.. then it started working-- ONCE... one time i fell asleep and slept good with it... and the next time i tried it... i broke out into hives... did the same the 2 times i used it after that, so needless to say, i dont use it anymore!

people have suggested herbs like melatonin and valerian... please dont take these if you're on other meds! I know a lot of people here arent big fans of doctors, (dude, neither am i,lol) but please please dont take any herbal supplements such as valerian, st johns wort, etc, without speaking to a doctor!

EDIT: now that i think about it, i dont think a doc will do much good either...IMO, its a good idea to talk to a doctor AND a QUALIFIED herbalist (is that the right word?) or dietitian.. and please dont forget that the chick at whole foods or GNC is MOST likely not that qualified (of course some can be, but most are not)

I will say-- the cal mag tea that VG suggested sounds good to me! Lol... i've heard too that the combo helps big time with sleep... im the worst insomniac, lol... right now my record is 38 hours without sleep... i hope i never repeat that!

awww, I feel your pain!!! Last week I didn't sleep for over 3 days. 74 hours!!! I almost went to the ER, I was freaking out !

I would have been great in "I walked with a zombie" (a great movie, btw, one of the most beautiful horror films ever, that's wierd to say, but it is so lovely.)

Nothing seems to work 100% for me... Sometimes sleeping with my head at the foot of the bed helps..also smoking a blunt or two seems to have a nice "calm/happy" effect. hahaha. ;-)
It is EXTREMELY strong, so if you do not have a high tolerance like I do, i wouldnt recommend it. Do not take it unless you have a chaperone because it may make you hallucinate. I would talk to your Dr and try something less strong before you resort to this

Yeah, I took 1 1/2 once and it was fucking crazy! I thought I was in Africa and my cats were lions and my plants were big crazy trees...I went on an Ambien safari! haha I was taking pictures of the mini blinds and the tips of my cats ears because I thought they looked so cool. Then my boyfriend brought me a blanket, which was blue, and I thought I was in the ocean! I was on the bed, with the blue blanket on me and I was sailing on the Ambien river in African-ambienland! And I am dead fucking serious, it sounds really funny and made up but I was really hallucinating BAD!!!
Also I have found that everything *seems* ultra cool when you are on Ambien...everything is pretty and soft and neat. Once when I was camping I had to go poop, and I didnt want to use the latrine thing but I had already taken my Ambien, I ended up driving a block up the road to the actual bathrooms...I almost drove off the road looking at these deer eating in the meadow..they were so pretty at the time, I wanted to get out and go "touch them" but my boyfriend said that wouldnt be "a good idea"...haha He knew I was tripping out on the Ambien!

I've been there so I believe you...although I rarely remember anything. If I hadnt seen myself on video, I would have never believed it

Ambien is too much. It makes me somnolent for 2 days, and I've never taken more than a half. Its also caused me to have waking amnesia. Yes, I was videotaped by my friend trying to eat soap in her bathtub. I wouldn't recommend it unless ABSOLUTELY necessary.

Caffeine late in the day really seems to fuck me.

Of all the things Katrine has ever said on SW, (to me) this might be the most memorable.

This is why I didn't want to open the door to psychotropic meds. Ambien CR is incredibly powerful as a sleep inducer, but it's just as likely to make you wake up in a cold sweat, fully transformed into a babbling cockroach, convinced that you are bleeding from every orifice.

Even the TV ads caution, "make sure you have 8 hours to devote to sleep before you take Ambien CR." The last thing the manufacturer wants is you to take it at 4:00 AM and then wake up in your own blattodean hell, screaming at your doctor's receptionist that you can't get your antennae clean.

But it will take you out. Knock you right down.

A much better, cleaner and softer sleep inducer is Ativan (lorazepam), which will erase your brain race in 30 minutes and then at 60 minutes drop you into a soft sleep with few hallucinatory side effects.

I've actually had more odd psychotropic reactions to Wellbutrin ER, a fabulous antidepressant, at 150 mg twice a day. It has the oddly pleasing effect of keeping your dreams continuous throughout the night. If you wake up in the middle of the night and interrupt a dream, you will pick up right where you left off in the dream when you fall back asleep.

I wanna change up all three meds I am on... Lunesta being the primary sleep medication. I'd like to try Ambien CR, if a Dr will prescribe it long term.

Ambien CR didn't do anything really for me, as well. Normal ambien worked well, but I wouldn't suggest it for long term. People get addicted to that stuff and become dependant.

Ambian didn't do anything to me. They maxed me out and I still couldn't sleep. I take a cocktail of stuff to sleep (even though it's not working at the moment) and I can say that you should NOT start taking prescription sleeping pills unless there are no other options.

I take Seroquel, Ativan, Neurontin, Trileptal, at really high doses every night. I am so high by the time my stuff kicks in I will fall all over the place and act like an idiot. There is NO way to wake me up though, if my house was on fire I would not wake up. My boyfriend can pick me up, put me in the car, and drive across town, and I don't move at all. That's the reason I say pills are a last resort (been doing mine for going on 10 years).
