    Default Know anything about champagne?

I'd not been a drinker before. This past month I've developed a taste for champagne. Love the stuff. I have a flute or two in VIP. Could you describe the individual tastes of the popular strip club champagnes so I know what I'd might like to order?

    PS Dom is overrated.

Hey! I love Dom, regardless of the fact you can get a tastier champy for alot less. It's classic. Though I still believe the only reason it became so popular is because Marilyn Monroe used to order it by the buttload when she did a photoshoot. (Hence, what certain rappers did for Cristal raising the price in a mere few years from around $40 a pop, to $500. Now THAT is horrible stuff.) Anything with the Chandon name is good, though I find the white star (moet&chandon) (very popular in SC's) to be a tad bitter for my taste. My advice is just to taste test here and there to figure out what's to YOUR liking. Which Dom did you try, brut or rose?

You Have to figure what YOU like...dry or sweet. Personally. Perrier Jouet is my fav, followed by Cristal. But Moet isn't bad for cheap stuff.

If you like sweeter...maybe you'd prefer PJ rose as opposed to PJ flower, which is more of a blush champagne. Moet also makes a sweeter version...Moet Nectar.

Or you can put a drop of grenadine in other champagnes to make it sweeter.
I prefer a dry wine/champagne....PJ Flower is SO good!

It is important to understand what champagne actually is because it's often confused with other things. Most people think that sparkling wine is actually champagne and it's not...there is a BIG difference and you can tell the difference when you drink it.

Champagne is aptly named for the region in France where it's made just like good merlot wines are made in the Merlot region of France as well. The difference between sparkling wines and Champagne is also the method to which it is prepared. By law, the majority of champagne-like drinks most people are familiar with are sparkling wines typically made in California. Sparkling wines, unlike Champagne have carbonation added to the bottle to give it the fizz much the same way that soda is made.

Champagne on the other hand has the bubbles added via a special process of in-bottle fermentation. The longer the bottle sits, the more carbonation builds up which is why most good champagnes are never younger than 3-4 years because it takes time for the carbonation to build up to a good level. It's also common for extremely old bottles of champagne to explode in cellars because the bottles can no longer take the stress of the internal build-up of carbonation.

Champagne and sparkling wines both are measured by their dryness which is a result of the amount of sugars put in the mix. A common breakdown for champagnes/sparkling wines is:

Extra Brut/Ultra Brut/Brut Zero.......... .6% sugars or less
    Brut.............................................. ..... 1.5%
    Extra Dry (or Extra Sec).................... 1.2 - 2.0 %

    Less common drynesses are:

    Sec............................................... .... 1.7 - 3.5%
    Demi-Sec or Doux............................ 3.5 - 6% (VERY SWEET)

So as you can see, the less sugar, the more dry. The more sugar, the more sweet. Personally, I've liked Dom and Cristal is very good too although there are a lot of great champagnes at a lot lower prices that are very good. If you want to have a lot of fun with sparkling wines or champagnes though, get one that is more dry like a Brut or Extra Dry and add something sweet to it like a strawberry...great stuff!

Veuve-Clucot is decent, especially for the relatively low price, and if you can afford Cristal - WOW. Cristal is the nectar of the gods but way out of my budget range, so if your club offers it and a customer is willing to buy, let him! I agree that Dom Perignon is vastly overrated. It's good, but it doesn't taste anywhere near as expensive as it is.

I like very dry champagne, so if you like the sugary stuff you won't like Cristal.

Also don't have too much! The bubbles in champagne will get you drunk more quickly.

PJ is delish as well, but I just can't see all the Cristal hype. I bought it, I drank it, I was not impressed. It tasted the same to me at a cost of $500 (stupid club overpricing) that it did at $40. It is an ok champagne, but if it was so great it wouldn't have needed rappers to boost the price tag. For half that try Clicquot Rose '95 and tell me THATS not better than Cristal. You'd be pleasantly surprised. I'm not trying to bash Cristal, but from a regular wine/champagne drinker who drinks with many a connoisseur one can make a much better choice with their $$$ than Cristal. But $hit, if it's on someone elses tab try it of course. If anything perhaps the price tag may give you a buzz, lol. As DW said, a strawberry or even a plump blackberry will soften the bite of a very dry champy and lighten the flavor up a tad. Very tasty!

Veuve Cliquot white/silver label used to be my all time favorite...it's a demi-sec, very sweet...and I even added a shot of peach Schnapps in my glass..ehh

Nowadays, I can't stand the sweet stuff...Veuve Cliquot yellow label is my fav.

DW is correct that champagne refers to a region. "Sparkling wine" is a term for what we call "champagne" that is not made in the region in France, and hence do not carry the title. The wine makers of Champagne don't want their name to become generic for sparkling wine.

But not all sparkling wine is made simply by adding carbonation. If you're looking for a good American "champagne," i.e., sparkling wine, look for the term "methode champenoise," or fermented in the one bottle. Some French champagne producers are now also in the Napa Valley, where their products are labeled sparkling wine.

Schramsberg (American) and Cava (Spanish) are two examples of sparkling wines that are made with the methode champenoise process and hold their own with French champagnes.

I don't really care about the brand as long as I have some orange juice to make a mimosa. When I was in mexico I drank those like water. I've had Cristal on a few occasions, it wasn't great, I've had great "cheap" 20 dollar champagne that was great, although I don't know the name. I have had something called White Star I believe, that was alright. You just have to try every different brand until you find what works. But definetly try mixing champagne with orange juice. Yummy!

LOL...I just made my wife and I Mimosas for our breakfast this morning. We have a really huge, nice liquor store near us and they sell small bottles of champagne so I usually get a 4 pack every week or so to make Mimosas for us so we con't have to pop a big bottle and waste most of it. Another great combination with sweeter champagnes is cranberry juice to smooth it out and give it a little kick. Yum Yum!

My daughter and I were just saying that we need to keep champagne in the house for our big Sunday brunches.

The small bottles (splits, I think they're called?) are a great idea. Thanks for the tip!

Champagne + Orange Juice = Mimosa
Champagne + Cranberry Juice = Poinsetta
Champagne + Grapefruit Juice = Lily
Champagne + Blueberry Juice = Orchid

Or you can substitute sparkling wine for champagne. I like to use very dry wine for these, to offset the sweetness in the juice. Personally I am a huge fan of lilies with a weekend breakfast, especially with extra dry wine.

It has bubbles. You drink it. Sometimes it costs a lot.

    Is there more?

    I hate Dom and Cristal

My fave is Perrier Jouet Rose - a sweet one, but not overly sweet. And the bottle is pretty with the pink flowers printed on the front I think it's generally a mid-priced bottle and a great choice!

I also like Krug Rose - also sweet, but it's much sweeter than the Perrier so it can be a little too sweet. And the bottle isn't as pretty I think it's a little pricier than Perrier too.

Veuve Cliquot - seems to be popular, probably because it's a cheaper one but not the cheapest available. I don't like it. bleh

    Also Moet = Cheap.

Those are the only names that come to mind off the top of my head. I used to sell aLOT of champagne in PR. hehe

Basically I think Roses are better tasting, sweeter. I don't like the dry stuff - tastes bitter to me.

Another drink that's my fave (sooo yummy!) is champagne (dry preferably) + Chambord with a couple of blackberries. At a bar in L.A. they served me something similar called a "Nasty Janet" but it also had Guiness beer (I think that's how you spell it?). Yuck.
