I finally figured out what's wrong with my foot. I'm developing a bunion! Ew.
Who has one? What do I do? Surgery seems a bit much (it's not progressed too far yet), but I don't want it to get to the disgusting-looking level.

I have bunions (because I have like every foot deformity known to man. Actually I have a normal bunion AND a tailor's bunion). The aesthetics of it are the least of your problems. Try to wear shoes with a wide toebox, and wear flats when you are not dancing. You can try shoving something between your big and next toe to align them perfectly. Even when they are not visible they can hurt really bad. And see a podiatrist. Oh, and high platforms, low slope shoes. Essentially try to avoid forcing your toes on a downward slope into the toebox. Bunions are strongly related to the wearing of high heels.
They can apparently do a mircosurgery, but I think it would have to be advanced to get the government to pay for it. You could probably pay for it in the states, but it will likely just come back.

Jenny is right on. I've referred to foot problems that run in my family, and this is one of them! My mom has had several surgeries b/c hers were terrible. The surgeries helped, but it's very possible it'll be only temporary (which is why she's had several surgeries).
I've noticed my feet are getting worse, and it does bother me the way they'll starting to look and the fact that I can't wear a lot of shoes that I like anymore.
From my experience, the only thing I can suggest is to always make sure you're wearing a good-fitting shoe. (I'm not even gonna touch the topic of stripper shoes....I'm just talking regular shoes). I notice that when my gym shoes START to get worn out, it will bother my feet somethin fierce.

good fitting shoes are a must, but even with thoseit can come to down to genetics (like me!)
surgery should only be a very last resort, if the bunion is really hurting you because it is very, very painful, quite invasive and i have a 2.5 inch scar running down the side of my foot!
Icky. Jenny, I like the idea of putting something between my big and second toe...that seems like it should stop the bone from moving further. What do you use/suggest?
My right foot is a goddamned mess. I've got something bunion-esque on the top of my foot too...I don't even know what to call it to google it...it seems similar physiologically to a bunion, but on top, where the 1st and second metatarsal bones 'meet'. Ideas?

Ballerinas always have bunions. I have never heard of strippers having them. Consider new shoes or padding in your new ones.

I have a "bump" on my foot from wearing high heels sans platforms. But, just see a podiatrist. Like, it is a bony, bunion like swelling on TOP of your foot? Eek. I can't even imagine what you'll put on your feet. So now I officially am lacking a foot deformity. They actually make funny little "bunion slings" if they are really severe and you can buy "toe spreaders"; now I just use cotton balls and wide toed shoes. I read somewhere or other that buying men's shoes for casual wear (sneaker and such) may be effective for women. You're quite tall and slender - you don't really need very high heels outside of work. I would suggest (and this one hurts a lot of women) that if you go out a lot wearing heels that you limit yourself to very low heels - in the 1-2 inch range.

Can you still flex your toes at all? If you can't pull your toes back at all, go to the doctor and get some pain killers, because it will take a few months to sort it out, especially if you are working. Try to limit your working to as short shifts as you can manage (I know you sometimes subject yourself to fairly brutal working conditions, and you could really NEED the pain killers. Ironically, for me it was the absolute worst for the first hour after I took the shoes off) and get the splint to wear at night (unless you have some circulatory issue - then consult your doctor) and get "comfortable" working shoes to work the floor in. Again - you are quite tall and slender - you don't really need the extra height.
