    Instructor

I'm eventually wanting to be a teacher/instructor of Burlesque, StripTease and Lap Dancing. I will affliate with someone else in re: pole dancing. I will also maybe look into HulaHoop Teacher Training (eventually).

Anyway, in your opinion, do you think I should also look into acquiring qualifications as a personal fitness trainer or would just being trained to teach all these styles of "dance" (as such) be enough ?

Becoming a teacher of what I have been doing (and plan to do - Burlesque) for all these many years is part of my exit strategy and long term plans. I know I have what it takes to teach and do it well as I have done so in the past when I was younger. Plus I would be doing something that I have always loved to do: perform, dance and incorporate sexuality/sensuality !

IMo, experience is the best qualification, but extra training is a major plus, espically for your credibility.

First Aid...CPR... Those are a must.

Depending on what you are teaching...remember that there is more to a class than the material you instruct. You need to know how to warm up the body for classes, and what muscles are targeted during each style of dance.

PT training is not a necessity, but it may be a good idea!

Check with your local pole dance studio, as to what qualifications they have! I have FA, CPR, MTT, and SIM.

I have simular plans and definatly think the qualifications are worthy.
Ive done various classes with people who have them and people who havent and I know what I prefur. Having said that though, it may depend on who and what your are teaching predominantly. There seems to be a market with or without the qualifications, but if you have them you'll always have them to fall back on. I wouldnt be surprised if the whole pole dancing / burlesque / stripping thing dies in the arse in the not so distant future so best have a plan B incase.

I became a burlesque teacher because people kept asking me to teach them. But I think if you frame it as a workout you have a wider base, and people are more likely to take it if they can excuse the expense as exercise in addition to being fun.

For most of the dance teachers I know, the teaching income is supplemental rather than primary, and they do additional things for money. And I know a lot of dance teachers!

I actually think differently esp. in re Burlesque hence the reason why I'm concentrating on that at the moment. There will ALWAYS be a market for strip-tease and lap dancing classes. The Pole Dancing classes might go backwards in a few years (some businesses will stay, others will bust) or stablise (no more growth, no more 'new' businesses) however ... here in Australia at the very least... Burlesque is still very new ... it hasn't even reached "popular" yet.. it is still in the "infant" stage where not alot of people know what Burlesque is and/or about it ....

oh... and i was going to aim at a wider market (thus a workout) whilst also having private one on one tuition available for professional dancers who want to learn it and perform it.

I think the point is to be able to aim at a wide variety of people etc. For instance Burlesque in Sydney and Melbourne does seem to have been done to death already. (People complaining about it on another forum Im on) there is overload of shitty acts out there which helps kill the scene I think. Its a shame. I think Qld was just last to get into it - although I did classes 6-7 years ago on the Coast so maybe Qld is just odd, lol.
There will always probably be some market , but like every other type of dance and fitness which has come beforehand Im guessing there will be cycles and something new will come along which is why I think the qualifications will go a long way.
I agree about the supplimenting income thing too. I was just thinking about the dance instructors i know and none of them do it primarily. Personal trainers on the other hand...

Yes, I think Alena was right about knowing how the body's physiology works with what you plan on teaching... but these types of certifications generally take only a few months to obtain.
However, as a SMART and STABLE exit strategy, I would take Aussie's advice and bill yourself as a personal trainer *SPECIalizing burlesque techniques and erotic dancing, or however you wish to bill yourself. This way, with personal training as your main platform, you make sure to ride any "fad" induced wave of market instability. Yes, I think there will be a call for this for a long time to come, but who knows if pole-dancing and burlesque will be popular in 20 years? Perhaps they will become mainstream and you'll make a fortune, perhaps they'll die out and you'll have to resort back to teaching cardio and free weights, with a few exotic dance moves in between.... MY advice, other than becoming certified, would be to take some business classes, if you have never done so. I know you are already a terrific businesswoman, but we can always aspire to more. This would help you plan both long-term and short-term goals for your company, help to ease through economic or fad-based downturns, business investments and expenses... etc. Just my 2 cents. I do think that becoming an instructor IS a good idea- just keep it broadly defined for now.

I was hoping to be a performer and be booked for parties/events as a burlesque performer not just what I do now (xxx showgirl)... I am mainly looking to expand upon what I already do now. I don't want to discard what I do now totally however just expand upon it and thus increase my chances to make income every week.

I guess that would be the best way to do this: as an addition to what I already do as a private party showgirl. This way I am not limited for work in a way ??

What's funny is that I never have seen myself as the personal fitness instructor type as I am so damn lazy! Yet at the same time if the qualification will be of some assistance in the long run I am willing to do it.................. just like I'm doing the Burlesque classes soon and also Hula-Hooping and Belly Dance classes.

In re: "the overload of shitty acts which help kill the scene" ........ there is an over-load of shitty strippers both within the clubs and private party scene however the scene is still around IMO, the shitty acts are a blessing not a bane because then when someone with some real talent comes around ... you stand out

Im not sure that I agree, funny I almost blogged about this a while ago. I think shitty strippers have harmed the industry. I certaily hear alot of complaints from customers about other dancers shows and I think its one of the nails in my clubs coffin, maybe two lol! One the other hand, people will probably always want to see nudity and experience some of the other things strip clubs have to offer - company etc...

Its funny though, teaching or doing personal training seem to be the obvious choices for me for things to go into. What else is there where I can use up so much energy and still perform / dance somewhat and be free to work for myself? Like you though I am lazy as, I would never and have never gone out of my way to be fit, but work is different (-: Not that I have plans to do this anytime soon, it would mean settling down ha!
