The Goddess workout..that is a good start. Try amazon.com for it used, i have also seen them at Ross.

The thing about belly dancing is that a lot of videos encourage you to push your stomach all the way out. Keep in mind if you do this repeatedly, that is how the muscle will form also. So, if you want a flat stomach (which isn't really the case in belly dancing), keep to more of the side to side, and tucking in movements.

It is great for the hips though and will add some flavor to your stage presence!!

^^^^Thanx for the tip, yea i have a bit of a stomach and just want it a little flatter, not pancake flat as i think a little tummy is sexy but i just want to tone it up a bit.
So do u think holding it in( like holdin my stomach muscles) while im shaking my hips would work it out?

I belly danced for a while and all I know is - I've never been so flexible. It was great for that.

Proper bellydancing does not ask for you to distend the stomach out. But when you are learning how to take control of all the muscles in your hips and abdomen, it would be beneficial for you to relax and contracts in a variety of angles.

Goddess workout sucks. Check out Jillina, Suhaila, and Ansuya.

You dont have to stick your stomache out when belly dancing you just have to relax your stomache. The purpose of relaxing your stomache is so that your stomache moves look more exaggerated.Same way you have to keep your knees bent so you can shimmy better.even though you dont have your stomache fully sucked in all the time you still get a good abdominal workout because you do contract and release your stomache naturally while dancing.I only take a belly dance class once a week since august and I havn't loss any weight. If you are doing it for fitness you should do it many times a week in addition to your regular workouts.

The Goddess Workout may suck however it has helped me get my footing in belly dancing, veils and zills. I also bought a 10 minute workout DVD that incorpoates three different belly dancers and their routines for 10 minutes.

I have no idea about the fitness benefits however I know it is has helped my stage dancing and private dances ! Keeps my movements fluid.

In the end, your best way to learn is to find a school and/or teacher near you. It is all over the place even here in Australia that it shouldn't be hard and it will be well worth the money you pay for the lessons more than one or three DVDs can do for you.... you'll learn how to do everything easier and faster IMO with a teacher (in person) than a DVD....

I only have the DVDs because I want to first learn Burlesque then I will seek out a belly dance school/teacher.

Bellydancing alone won't get you into shape if you watch a video once or twice a week. Now, when I was training and rehearsing 12 hours a week on average, now THAT was great excercise and all I needed, althought I did supplement it with gym and bike riding. Its a great supplementary workout.
