    Default Dancers with back issues

I feel like an old lady. I have been getting some serious lower back pain at the end of my shift. I think it is because i switched from knee high boots to regular sandal type stillettos at the club. Maybe?

I dragged my ass back to the weight room at the gym, I figure I must have weak abs and hamstrings, so my pelvis is tilting too far forward.

What scares me though is that 6 months ago I had my body fat tested with a DEXA (what they use for bone density) and it showed that I have a curve in my spine, like scoliosis I guess. That scared the crap outta me as my sister has scoliosis and has huge issues with back pain (because of drug addictions she can't take any meds).

Anyone else have back issues that dances?

I have scoliosis and spinabifida and many other back issues. Regular stretching, heating pads and Epsom salt baths work wonders to help the pain. There are times the pain is worse then others but it doesnt stop me, im a pole monkey, I shouldn't be but I am. I just make sure to wear flats when im not working and I wear a lower heel at work and have gel inserts in my shoes and boots. I also stretch before work. I don't drink(but yea I smoke a lot of weed lol) and I wont take advil unless I have to. Once n a blue moon I will take a muscle relaxer that you get at the drug store(non prescription) if the pain is too bad.

Minor curvature of the spine is common. My X-rays showed the same & I didn't even know until that point (a few years ago.)

You might want to go back to boot wearing, you are probably jarring your back with less supportive footwear.

I go to a GOOD reputable chiropractor & take Soma when needed. Back pain is part of life for many people, one of the most common medical complaints.

Chiropractic!! Find a good one through word of mouth. One of our floor men is a chiropractor by day and takes care of the girls. Trust me, your body is your investment and if you are heading down the road to injury its worth the money.

I have a HORRIBLE back. I'm in constant pain and have a very bad curvature of the spine. It sucks, but I just deal...massage when i can and chiro when I have time....
People always ask me, did I ever learn anything when I was a stripper? Yeah, I did. One man plus two beers equals 20 dollars.

I have scoliosis too, and my waist is a little weird...I really have to pay attention to standing up straight otherwise it looks like my lower body is just in a different position.
Anyway, you can always help it by swimming. I don't swim, but a lot of doctors I've been to, told me that I should...I don't know how old you are but I assume you're over 18, so it probably won't reverse it, but it can help you stop it from getting worse.
You should go to the doctors so they can tell you have serious it is. It might not be as serious as your sister's .
    Good luck.

I have back issues thanks to the stripper heels too. Unfortunately boots aren't allowed at alot of the clubs I work within so it is just something I have to deal with along with weak ankles.

Epsom bath salts works wonders if you have access to a bath. Otherwise, heating pads and stretching out your back (there are even private/lap dance moves that I do that help me stretch out my back without looking like I'm doing it lol) works wonders as well.

Naturally, working on your core muscles (not just the front ones, the back ones as well) helps. I have a few exercise moves that I do a few times a week that help me.

I, too, have curvature of the spine- both scoliosis and lordosis. My Dr. told me that as long as I dance it will aggravate the problem. It hurts because the muscles around the curved spine spasm. I wake up from sleeping with a sensation that knives are stabbing me in the back. I was put on pain meds as well as muscle relaxers. I did stretch frequently throught the day as well. I haven't danced in 3 months now and haven't had any trouble with back pain since I quit. I also do not take the prescriptions either. If you're fortunate enough to have someone who doesn't mind giving you backrubs, that would help tremendously- both after work and when you wake up. Walking around in 7-8" plats definitely aggravates the condition and there's not a whole lot you can do. It won't go away but you can make the pain subside. The meds helped me tremendously, it just got to be ridiculously expensive and I hated having to depend on pills to make a living. I guess as long as you control the pills and they don't control you, I don't see a problem as long as they're helping you and making it easier to work.

Good luck, I feel for you.
