Default Moving to NY city. NY girls, I need your advice

I'd looove to move to NY from Texas. I like NY energy, culture, people, food, atmosphere. I've only visited. I'd like some info on what it's like to live in NY. In Texas I can buy a house, a car, I have low house fees at work and no scheduleand thus less stress, no big city hustle and bustle, college is not too expensive, no state income tax, Texas is a good place to have a family and raise children.
On the other hand, it's way too hot, boring, my dating life sucks, you can't even go for a walk anywhere, you have to have a car to get ANYWHERE, there are no parks, not enough culture , it's way too smocky for me at work and local guys are for the most part are spoiled (too many attractive women in Texas), cheap rednecks.
I'd like your idea of what it's like to live in NY city. I know an girl who used to live in NY city and she says she can't imagine living there again although she enjoyed it when she lived there. I am very much a museum and art type of girl, I'd like to be surrounded by culture and people who enjoy and appreciate it. NY seems like that kind of place. But is it true they say in NY you have no time for anything although you are close to everything?
I'd like to ask you if you enjoy living in NY, what the pros and cons are. What is the work environment in NY clubs? How are the customers? From what I've seem NY guys that come to strip clubs are more pleasant to be around, more respectful and don't waste your time like they like to do in the South. It seems NYkers understand time is money. Also, what is dating life like in NY? is it a good place to go to school, raise children?
How do you go about finding an apartment? I'd like to bring my car if I move in NY. Can you have a car if you live in New Jersey, Brooklyn, Quenns or is it still quite a hustle to own, drive and park a car anywhere around Manhattan? I like Manhattan, but would prefer to live somewhere where it's quiter and cheaper. Would Jersey or Brooklyn be a good choice? or would I be spending too much time on getting to and from Manhattan to go to work?
I know it's a lot of questions, I'd really appreciate your advice.

Oh man, those are a LOT of questions!
I think you need to just come to NYC on vacation and check it out. Or, subscribe to either New York Magazine or Time Out New York.

They say you have no time for everything even though you are close to everything, because in New York you have to work your ass off to be able to afford to be here. People live here to make money, period. No lazy asses in Manhattan. I can't speak for the boroughs.

Do I enjoy living in NYC? Absolutely! Most of the time I can't imagine living anywhere else. But there are times that I miss the things like great weather, driving (without traffic, of course), grass, neighborhoods, malls, BIG groceries....
There are pros and cons to every city, you know?

Work environment: do a search on the forums on this site, there are a million posts about NYC clubs. I will say this, and I think I can speak for almost every girl in NYC: this place is a hustle! You must really be good at entertaining to make money in the SC's in this town. Lots and lots of competition. And CRAZY ass house fees. Ours START at $120 and go to $160 depending on which night of the week. This does not include tip out. All the clubs vary on these fees, I'm just speaking for my own.
NYC has a lot of out-of-towner customers, being that we are the business capital of the country and all. And yes, the NYC customers are faster, but they are also slyer, keener, and expect more for their money. So be prepared to be propositioned, by both the customers AND the floor hosts. Also, I can't speak for the rest of the country, but in NYC there are a lot of drugs, as well.

It's not all lollipops and sugar coated sweets here..... it's a tough city to work in.

NYC is a great place to go to school, but you won't get that 'campus' feeling, there isn't one. The schools in NYC mesh in with the surrounding city. I went to a big college campus school, my sis went to a city school- she regrets not having a campus life.
Kids- sure, it's great raising kids here, if you make well over $500K a year. It's expensive as HELL to raise kids in the city. You don't want them going to public school- and private costs start at $25k (I have nieces and nephews living here in NYC). Plus, living expenses in NYC are astronomical. My studio I used to live in, around 250 square feet, was $1,250 a month 5 years ago. (meaning, the price has since gone up approximately $50 a year after, it was rent stabilized). The studio I lived in the past 3 years, around the same square footage, was $1,650 a month. Neither included utilities.
Oh, and forget having a car in the city. Monthly parking starts at about $300/month (cheap) and I pay $450/month (pricey). The area I live in has a million freakin cars and only a few garages, so they can rip you off and people still pay. Sucks.

Dating life? I think it's AWESOME. I feel like everyone in Manhattan is single. Lots of bars, restaurants, local favorites/hangouts....there are enough places for you to go to one of each for the next 5 years and never hit the same place twice!

I cannot speak for outside of Manhattan, as this is the only place I've ever lived.

I will say this, depending on where you work and live completely depends on how much traffic you'll hit.
You mentioned that "you have to have a car to get ANYWHERE..."... so why do you want to bring your car to a city where you don't need it? It's only going to be a burden.

    I love it here.

However...if you think there are good-looking girls in Texas (and I know there are) wait till you come to where the supermodels live! And I mean the ACTUAL supermodels, not girls who look like supermodels.

    Here's a renter's guide:
    http://www.anchornyc.com/Renter.htm
Forget any kind of logic or psychology when it comes to renting in new York:
    http://nymag.com/realestate/features/20332/index.html

New York IS all that, but I'll tell you one thing, nobody who works for a living here works part-time.

The only people I know who own cars in New York (including my friends who live in Brooklyn and Queens and Jersey) are CEOs.

NYC has the higherst rating of singles in any big city. It promotes singleness. So don't move here thinking your going to find a boyfreind right away.
this is a hard place to make it in but if you think you got what it takes then go for it. The only looser is the one who does not try.
Look on Craigslist for an apartmetn I have done it with every city I have ever lived in.
Come visist NY and get a job 1st and then move but do not move all your stuff. I haave 2 storage units for a reason. You will move around alot at 1st until you get use to it and get the hang of what the hell is really going on here.

You could live where I do. Hudson county in NJ. I live in an apt RIGHT in front of the hudson river over looking Manhattan with a view of New York even New York doesn't have. I live 10 mins by bus to manhattan, 8 mins by ferry and like 5 mins by car. The best thing of all though is I live right by manhattan but pay New Jersy prices for rent. It's a sweet deal!

Thank you, girls. I've on vacation to NY twice. I was specifically there to check out the city. I'd like to keep my car if I moved swomewhere to NJ, Queens or Brooklyn. Do you have the same issues with parking a car there, too? Also, can you ever buy a piece of property there or is it too expensive to own one? Do you pretty much work work work no time for nothing there? Thank you.

You can definitely keep your car if you live in NJ.. NY not so much but then you don't really need one.

Buying a house where I live is definitely more affordable (although expensive still) than buying a house in the city. Everybody im my area is from the city and works in Manhattan.

I grew up outside of the city, which is still a great way to save the $. Make more IN the city and spend less OUT of it. When I moved south into the apple itself, I lived mostly in Brooklyn, then out on Long Island. Even there, still VERY pricey to live. You CAN keep your car, but it may not be useful much unless you wanna travel. Despite the fact that a lot of folks do drive in the city, I never did. I never needed to. And the traffic was insane anyways. It would have driven me batshit insane. With all of the butt-ton of public transportation options, its often better and cheaper to leave the car home. Even when commuting from outside the city. Back in the day, the MetroNorth from Poughkeepsie to Manhattan took a lil under an hour and a half, and it was cheap. Whereas my apartments in the city ran from the $600 (a major steal and VERY rare) to $1200 for a ROOM in the city, in Poughkeepsie and the outlying areas, I had a 3 floor, 3 bedroom apartment for $600.

I miss the glamor and the excitement and the sensory overload of Gotham, but you can still have that every day and not live in the wallet black hole itself. LOL.

I personally wouldn't live there, but it sounds like Jersey would be your best bet. You can keep your car, good to raise a family. You can buy property. Less taxes. And depending on where you live, it'll be 20 min or less by bus, PATH, or car into the city.

I grew up on Long Island, have lived in Manhattan and currently live in Queens. I do have a car. I pay 150 a month to a car repair shop on the next ave over to let me park my car there.

I prefer living in Queens vs the city. I was on the upper east side. I actually get everywhere in the city quicker now cause I live off a great subway line. From the upper east side, there's only one line that you have to take down and then transfer...

Because I live RIGHT over the bridge, I also get home quicker in a cab vs where I used to live....

    I suggest Jersey for you.

Long Island could be another option. I would definitely not bring my car to NY right away, I'd need to be there for a while to make sure I want to be there for a long time. I'd think NJ would be good if I decided to settle there and buy a property? Could you tell me which neighbourhood of Queens I could look into? I have been to Brooklyn several times, but haven't made it to Queens. I heard some people say it's quicker to get to Manhattan from Queens than anywhere else? Also, how do you get home after work? Is't it expensive to take cab every time? I wouldn't think it's safe to travel by subway late at night. Or am I wrong?

Lots of people take the subway home all hours of the night. I guess what would matter would be which line you take and what neighborhood you'll be travelling into. But even taking that into consideration, no one can predict if they'll be making a safe trip or not.

Some parts of Brooklyn are as close as Queens is to Manhattan. The biggest factor is how close you will be to the bridges and tunnels.

The Queens Midtown Tunnel (my fav way into the city) is in Long Island City. I like to take it because the toll ($4.50) deters some drivers- they'd rather drive over the free bridges.

There are so many other ways also, Queensbridge (queens), Williamsburg (bklyn), Manhattan (bklyn), and Brooklyn (bklyn) bridges. There is also the Brooklyn battery tunnel which also charges a toll.

If you move to NJ, you will use the Lincoln or Holland Tunnel and the GW Bridge. So 1 plus is Brooklyn/Queens gives you much more options other than the subway.

Parking is definitely a pain, but what I do is find one of the cheaper parking garages and park my car there then hop on a short train ride or cab ride to wherever I want to go in the city. I do this because I stay in the southernmost tip of Brooklyn, which means my subway ride is at least 50 minutes before I get to midtown manhattan.

Also, I like to shop and hang out at night, so parking on the street is a little easier, as is driving around mahattan.

I hate Long Island and Dirty Jeresy. I have lived in Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan 9all over) and now I am back to BK.
I have been doing the NYC tour for a while. I like to feel out different neighborhoods.

NYC is cleaner than it use to be and one of the safest cities in the US. St. Louis and Detroit being the least safest.

Yeah, def. I LOVE the city. So much to do for everyone, esp adults. If I were single, I wouldn't be looking for "serious" potential there. haha.

I live in Jersey and it takes me 10 minutes to get to NYC. Alot faster than it takes some people to get from the boros to Manhattan. PATH fares are cheaper too. Hehehehe.

LOL it is never so much that either place (NYC or Jersey) are cleaner than, yadda yadda... but it's in our blood to hate each other. Teehee. Hell, I STILL hate Jersey, and I dont live in NY anymore.

Oh, this might prove to be useful. When I lived in Williamsburg, it was $20 for car service (not a cab, a town car) to anywhere in Manhattan.

I don't know yet when I am moving, I need to find a club in NY where I can work on a regular bases and make consistent money. Plus, I need to find an apartment in NY. Plus, I need to decide what to do with all the stuff I have in Texas. I thought about buying a house in Texas, fortunately, home prices there are on the rise, keep my car and furniture there, plus I wouldn't have to pay NY state taxes if my primary edisence is in Texas. This way I'd have a place i could always go back too if I decided NY is not for me after being there for a while. Or do you think it would be too much of a headache to have a house in one state and live in another? I would not be able to buy a property in NY or NJ for quite some time. First, I'd need to figure out if I'd like to live there for a long time, and besides, I'd need to see if I could ever afford having a property there. What would you girls do?
also, how long does it take you to get to work and from on a daily bases if you live outside of Manhattan and work in Manhattan?

When you move you need to put your furniture in storage as I did nearly 2 years ago. You don't or want your furniture. Trust me. Storage is the way to go. Just fly up here for a week. Get a hotel in the city, about $1000 or less and start looking for a job. Go to craigslist to find an apartment or just rent a room in the mean time while keeping your place in TX.
Check out and see if NY is want you want. You might get here and hate it, as many do. Don't be in a rush you could cost yourself more money in the long run.
I will help you on this issue cause I know what it is like to move and move to NYC.
