    President Bush's Speech- Anyone Watching?

I can hardly think straight listening to all of this at the moment.

I'm really mad about this whole thing. My fiance's best friend (who is a friend of both of ours from jr. high) just found out that he's getting sent back to Iraq...TWO WEEKS before he was supposed to be out and done. He gave up his leave days to get out earlier...now he doesn't get to come home at all before he gets sent back over.

I'm pissed. Nothing else I can really say.

    Edit: Any thoughts?

That's horrible. I heard yesterday that the military has been sending letters to the homes of soldiers who DIED in Iraq, requesting that they "renew their service" and go back. Evidently they're just sending these letters out to all former military without bothering to look if they're alive or dead, so these people's families are getting these letters. Insensitive and disgusting... we have got to have the most inept bureaucracy in the western world.

I don't have a TV so I'm not watching his speech. What's he talking about besides "stay the course" and "we will win" and "I know how hard it is to put food on your family"?

I'm not listening with a level-head, so I'm not the one to tell you what he's saying. It sounds just the same to me.

My guy's best man (for our wedding) is about to get sent straight to the heart of Baghdad. I'm crushed.

I watched about the first 5 minutes of it just gritting my teeth. I guess I'll go and try to catch a few more minutes of it

As soon as the 'Special Report' music started, I changed the channel. I don't care for the President, so all watching it would do is piss me off. I'll read about it later, but watching it on tv is a no-go for me. Grrrrr.

I didn't want to watch it, since they already announced what he would say. I figured I'd just get mad if I watched the whole thing. Eh.

Agreed ! On the one hand the military itself does NOT want a draft reinstated, primarily because the technical competence required in today's military now goes far beyond simply carrying an M16 thus the vast majority of draftees would lack sufficient skills to actually be 'useful' in a high-tech military environment.

Arguably, current US servicemen do NOT want a draft reinstated either. Friends I have talked to who are in the military are not comfortable at all with the possibility that they would have to trust an 'unwilling' draftee with marginal combat skills and a bad attitude to be watching their backs in dangerous situations.

From another standpoint, most Americans already do not support an American military presence in the middle east, and the spectre of a draft would only serve as a focal point to force a change in the 'status quo'.

I dunno... I can still see it happening. It's not like our so-called "leaders" give a fuck about what the average servicement wants or needs, anyway. They shit on the troops every day. And they want more.

I can see us going the same way ancient Rome did. We're going to be spread out too thin, fighting too many simultaneous wars and skirmishes in too many different areas, and and financially collapsing within. When we finally meet our Huns/Moors/Saxons, they'll have no trouble knocking us down.

^^^ nope, no chance. Besides the reasons already stated, any attempt to reinstate the draft would quickly sweep up the ACLU or some similar organization into an 'equal treatment under the law' lawsuit ... with the issue being conscription of an equal number of females as males for mandatory military service, with the further issue of including equal numbers of males and females in 'front line' combat positions etc. All of the drumming for equal rights / equal treatment for women over the past 30 years would definitely force a rule change versus the military draft of the Vietnam era which was men only plus exemptions for those men who were 'rich' enough to afford college. If congressman Rangel's rhetoric is to be believed, any reinstated draft must not discriminate on the basis of race, creed, sex etc, nor may it include exemptions for the 'rich'. Of course, the IDF already has such mandatory conscription of males and females, but I doubt that Americans are ready for nightly news coverage showing dozens of young American servicewomen in body bags yet.

Agreed on ancient Rome though ... but you left out one other very important variation i.e. the hiring of 'Mercenaries'. I'm absolutely certain that the IDF would gladly nuke Syria, Iran, Iraq and anybody else on the islamic enemies list in exchange for $100 billion a year worth of additional military aid from America and a 'withdrawl' of US / UK troops from the middle east 'front' as well as from Israeli foreign policy decisions.

I don't think the IDF is a gang of hired thugs, as you seem to. If they were to nuke another country, it would be for Israel's interests first and foremost. I can't see them doing that unless really pressed to do so in self-defense, however.

And I can definitely see the U.S. setting up an equal-opportunity draft. Plenty of servicewomen already die every day, and also suffer rape and harassment from their own coworkers. Nobody really gives a damn, certainly not the president. And current arguments about how the military unfairly targets the poor/uneducated with no other opportunities could easily lead to an argument that wealthy/educated people should be forced into "their fair share" through a draft.

First off, please understand that I empathize and ... no matter how you cut it, this sucks !

Second, please also understand that despite mainstream media spin, the reason that existing troop rotations are now being extended in Iraq can be directly correlated to the refusal by Nancy Pelosi and Dusty Harry to allow a straight-up vote on a funding resolution for 'replacement' troops in Iraq and Afghanistan since the new congress started, and they have instead scheduled a 'symbolic' opposition vote for next week.

It's not impossible ! However, it would certainly provide the military with lots of 'useless' personnel, conscripted soldiers with poor combat skills and even poorer attitudes, and a lot of additional risk for the 'professional' soldiers already in the military who must now trust their lives to those conscripted soldiers.

Also, as in the Vietnam era, it would provide a strong incentive for highly educated highly productive young Americans to become ex-Americans - which would only hasten America's descent toward third world country status !

And now to the $64 million dollar question. If US courts have ruled that illegal aliens must receive 'equal treatment under the law' in the area of receiving social welfare benefits, does that 'equal treatment under the law' also mean that the US gov't can / must draft illegal aliens into the US military ?

Thank you. I'm getting used to the distance, but it still isn't easy. Hopefully they will continue as planned and he will be home before the end of the month, if not, then I go another few months. I have learned that you can't get your hopes up or count on much... but it is sure nice when you get great news of a homecoming.

Ah, I see, our troops being bogged down in the Iraq debacle is the Democrats' fault

I'm disappointed - you are usually a lot more clever with your mischaracterizations of fact than this. It would almost be funny if it weren't so tragic.

Melonie, that's a great idea. Forced conscription of illegal aliens! Let's do that and kill two birds with one stone!

Ah, I see, our troops being bogged down in the Iraq debacle is the Democrats' fault
I didn't say that .... although I could bring up Bill Clinton being less interested in Osama Bin Laden than in Monica Lewinski anecdotes, Clinton ordering US troops to desert the anti-islamic terrorist gov't of Somalia in 1993, Clinton ignoring the USS Cole attack / numerous US embassy attacks / first attack on the world trade center etc. But those are old stories that Democrats and the mainstream press have conveniently forgotten, and which also require connecting the dots re cause and effect of larger and larger islamic terrorist attacks against US citizens / military never prompting a US response in kind until 9/11 !!! You can read all about such matters if the classified National Archives documents that Sandy Berger shoved into his pants are ever recovered.

At any rate, what I did say is that the extending of troop rotation schedules that are occurring as we speak are occurring as a direct result of a lack of new spending authorization from the US congress to cover 'replacement' troops ... and the reason that there isn't any spending authorization yet is because the new speaker of the house and the new majority leader of the senate have decided to delay any vote until their 'symbolic' support for the Iraq war vote can be organized for next week.

Forced conscription of illegal aliens! Let's do that and kill two birds with one stone!
nope, that was a joke ! Can you imagine the 'field day' that Al Queda could have if they could simply send operatives to Mexico, teach them some spanish, let them walk across the Arizona border dressed as Mexicans, and then have them drafted and placed into the very same US military units in Iraq that other members of Al Queda are fighting ??? Talk about 'fifth column' on an unprecedented scale !!!
