    Default Jack Russell terrier

My boyfriend and I fell in love with a jack russell terrier today at the petstore. She was soo sweet and calm when we held her, yet vey playful when we out her down. She loked at us with such smart eyes...she was awesome. We want to buy her. So I came home and did research on them, and they do not sound like nice dogs at all.
All the sites I read said they are aggressive towards other animals, espicially smaller animals than themselves, they will chase and kill small animals, said they like to bark a lot and dig holes, this puppy did not bark or make any noise at all when we were playing with her.

Anywya, does anyone own one, can tell me about them? I have 2 cats, and Im worried nowthat the pupy will hurt my cats. She seemed so sweet and very docile when we played withher. we were there an hour. I know its all in how you raise an animal that shapes their personality, but I read on 4 different sites that jack russells are very flighty, and may act nice for years, and one day just decide to kill your cat. I dont believe that at all, but Im a little worried.

so what can anyone tell me about them? I really want to go pick her up tomorrow, she was so sweet.

The thing is... pets are never the same in the store as they are in your home once they've gotten used to you ( I have birds - I should know! )... they are handled a lot by evil jelly-stained children who pull their tails.. they're fed a poor diet.. normally they're really scared in the stores so they behave very well so that nobody fricken hurts them... I bought a budgie last week that fell asleep in my hand... now he won't stop biting me and refuses to be trick-trained....

Normally it takes 3 weeks for their true TRUE personality to show... that could be too late... especially for returns..and pets. :/

A family member has two females. They are here a lot of the time. We also have two miniature dachshunds. We have an affiliation with a kennel, so I can give you some credible info.

Put the thought out of your mind. First, buy your puppy from a reputable breeder. A good breeder will have the parents who you want to observe. You want a dog from well-behaved parents. You cannot know this with a pet shop dog. It may be a low-quality pup that came from a puppy-mill.

So I came home and did research on them, and they do not sound like nice dogs at all.

Not a good indicator of future behavior. You need to see the parents. Everything you say here is true. They are small but aggressive. Hell, they were bred to go down into holes and get the fox in fox hunting. They can be fierce little animals. The hunt master would keep a Jack Russel in the pocket of his coat and let the dog loose if the fox ran down a gopher hole.

    Don't do it!!!!!!!

The two that we watch have killed one show cat in the owners house. Yes they are a lot of fun, little high-energy dogs and can be very loving to the owner. I love our two little visitors, but you have to be careful with them. When our doxy had a litter we did not leave the JR's alone at any time with the pups. On the other hand, when all four dogs are at home, it's more fun than a barrel of monkeys!!

They do fight with each other. We have to be careful when all 4 are home about feeding etc. We feed them separately. Have to be careful with the food. We've had a few nasty little fights.

You also need to keep them entertained and busy, or they will entertain themselves, sometimes destructively. They are smart little boogers and won't like being left alone for long periods.

It's not all bad, but this is something that you reallly need to think through and plan ahead. The worst thing you could do would be to impulse buy a pup of this breed.

Remember, the name terrier comes from terra, which means earth. Terriers dig. If you have rosebushes, forget it. My aunt trains dogs, and you can't untrain what's genetically hardwired. The most they can do is dig sandpits in the yard with toys hidden in them to discourage them from digging elsewhere.

I've (my mom, now, after I left the house) has one, and I've never seen a better dog in my life. We raised it with two cats- it never came close to harming either, and when one of the cats died from older age, the dog became depressed- they were buddies! He's *smart* as hell, very much a lapdog, and well behaved.

BUT... on the other hand, his brother, who's owned by my uncle, is a bit over-loyal, and WILL bite people new to my uncle's house. Otherwise, he's a very good dog as well.

They tend to be althletic- do you have room for her/him to play? And while my dog loved our cats, I guess there would be no way of knowing yours would be the same- but it is possible.

I agree- breeders are the best way to go. Support a system that actually takes care of it's animals.

Everything you said supported what I have read on numerous websites. Its very dissapointing, but i cant take a chance that she wont get along with the cats. Thank you for the information.

I miss my Jack Russel Terrier.

He was, hard to handle, had a vertical jump of 6 feet, dug up the carpet, barked, tore shit off the table

    and then daddy came home.

If you get them young, establish dominance early. AS A COUPLE. When you train do it TOGETHER. obviously play individually, but at all "teaching sessions" make sure you and your boy are there so she can register you both as masters.

DO NOT FALTER IN YOUR COMMANDS. This is key. "Bad dog!" is not the same as "Idiot!" Yes they hear tone but the tone has to match the command.

They are HARD to train but repetition with praise will be of benefit. Requires diligence. Have fun, they have an amazing personality.

Whatever you do, don't buy from a pet shop. Those poor doggies come straight from puppy mills, no matter what they tell you to try to get you to buy the dog.

That being said, I know someone that has two Jack Russells, a male and a female. I think they are awesome dogs.

actually, lately I've been calling him Douchebag, Jackass and Fuckwad....but I love him!

and how much do you like your furniture and carpet? Because if you get a JRT, he will destory them. Blankets, pillows, even walls.

They will try to kill small animals, but not animals they know as puppies. Like I also have ferrets and a smaller pomerianian. They get along perfectly. He's more interested in the ferrets' food than the ferrets.

But he's so awesome and sweet. He insists on snuggling at night. I can't get that kind of love anywhere else. He's got SO much personality. And he does bark a lot. It's more of a protecting the house/intimidating another dog type thing, so a puppy at a store won't do it.

And like Mast says....hard to train, especially potty train.

My roomate had a Jack Russel, two of them, actually. The one was OK, if a bit excitable, but basically a pretty cool little dog.

The other one was the only animal I have ever actually hated, other than way the hell back when an old roomate's cat used to beat the living shit out of our cat, especially when she tried to use the litterbox.

Understand this, I love all animals, and they almost invariably love me, but I seriously wanted to drop kick this dog...

The dog was whacko, nuts, literally psychotic.

But from everything I have heard about Jack Russels, it's hardly surprising. they are supposedly among the very most intelligent of dogs, but this means you have to respect that intelligence, and either train them properly, or make sure someone else has.

My roomate didn't, but considering he was a hardcore alcoholic/cocaine addict/methhead, it's hardly surprising. The second dog was trained by a later girlfriend he had, which is why he was alot better, if a bit whacked for a dog.

Probably the most outrageously irritating thing the dog did was to piss on the leg of whatever new guest entered the house, especially women. All of them, every last one. Great way to impress a date who's really starting to warm up to you. I rapidly learned that when I let anyone in or brought anyone home, it was vitally necessary to aggressively fend him off by yelling and pushing him away, or there'd be peeing on the leg for sure.

He would also bark furiously at the slightest excuse, in a very high-pitched, penetrating, and irritating tone. And he wouldn't stop until he got what he wanted--to play, to find out who was outside or walking by (sometimes imagining this, I might add--he would start at the slightest noise), some of whatever anyone was even thinking of eating, etc. I long ago got in the habit of sleeping with a pillow over my head (old roomates who loved power tools, lol), but this dog's bark would penetrate the wall of a nuclear reactor.

Any puppy will chew up anything chewable if you leave it laying on the floor, but this dog never stopped, plus he was smart enough to grab shit off tables, etc. to destroy.

What was really funny, though is that the dog, whom I detested, would only listen to and obey me. No one else, no matter how much they yelled at him. I could get the dog to shut up, for instance--no one else could. At least until I went back in my room, that is. I do have that kind of voice, though--that is the only reason, I'm sure.

I have no doubt that Jack Russels deserve their reputation as being the coolest dogs ever, if you train them well--as Emily obviously has--but beware one that has had a bad start in life!

oh, mine's not trained well at all! He's not pissing on people's legs or mean, but he can be difficult to control. If he sees something he wants and he can run after it, he won't listen to me. He only comes to his name in the house, but outside, forget it! He's already been hit by a car after trying to chase after the UPS guy as I was bringing in a package. (He's alright.) But he's trained well by me to understand I'm alpha, the ferrets and the pomeranians are friends. That's it. Anybody else is fair game. He naturally loves kids and gravitates towards them when we go out for walks. Oh, you will have to walk your JRT a lot or get a fenced in yard.

I won't even consider an electric fence because of him. He's that crazy that he would probably run through it if he saw a rabbit or cat. They are very determined and strong animals. I think they are very similar to pitbulls (they even look like them, imo), without the bad rep.

Sometimes I fantasize about life without a JRT. A life where I could have nice things and a dog that didn't poop on the carpet. And then it makes me sad because he's so cool! He's got so much personality and intelligence. I really feel like I have a human toddler.

JRT's are VERY high strung and need a LOT of attention.

If you want a dog...please try the shelter or a rescue..whatever breed you want. Pet stores...even breeders unless you can PROVE that they are good(most "breeders" are crap backyard hobbyists who kow nothing of breeding or husbandry and just like cute baby animals or want to turn a profit)

oh yeah, there are a lot of JRTs in animals shelters. It's kinda sad because for some dumb reason I'm on petfinder.org looking at them all, wanting to take them all.

I'm assuming the reason is because JRTs are much more demanding and destructive than people realize. That was true for me, but somehow he managed to find a place in my heart and I could never give him up.

This is what you have to look forward to...images from my own house. He's jsut playing with my friend's shih tzu, but he's making SO MUCH NOISE! (I included the last picture because that was the face I fell in love with when I got him.)

Well, I have a pretty large yard for being in Vegas, it is fenced in my a very large concrete wall. So getting out wouldnt be an issue, although I would love to walk him and take him to the park a lot. That is one reason I am looking at getting a puppy.
This puppy we looked at did not bark or make any noise at all when we played with her. We were actually really suprised at that, because every oher puppy was makign hellacious noice, and we tried to get the puppy riled up when we played with her, but she would not bark. I read that sometimes JRT are prone to deafness, I wonder if that may be why she wouldnt bark?
But barking is not somethign Im concerned with, I truly believe if you dont want a dog to bark, or dont like dogs who bark, dont get a freakin dog!

Even the destruction doesn't bother me to much, a I expected things to get chewed at first anyway, as that comes withthe territory of getting a puppy. I did not know they were hard to train tho, as I saw how smart this puppy was, and thought training her would be easy.

She seemed like such a wonderful puppy, I would overlook all the other bad points of owning that breed, but I cant overlook the cat killing part. That scares me.

Emily, do you let your ferrets run loose in the house? Does your dog chase them? Would you be comfortable letting yoru ferrets alone with the dog?

When Im home Im not worried, but I dont want to be scared to leave the dog and the cats home alone.

And as for shelters....Im a big advocate of adopting from shelters. I dotn even need a ful bred dog, I just want a dog, and I knwo that most mutt breeds make better dogs than full bred anyway. However, I will not adopt from a shelter in las vegas ever again.
I made that mistake once already. The shelters out here are disgusting. Diseases run rampant in the shelters. I adopted a perfectly healthy kitten from the shelter, but she had to wait 3 days to come home with me since she was a stray. She died the same night i got her from Panleukopenia, a disease she would have never got if she wasnt in that disgusting shelter.
I will not adopt from a shelter out here again. This shelter was no kill, it looked nice, clean, the kitties had thier own rooms to roam free in, and they also had a kill side. ( how do they decide who goes on the kil side and who goes to the no kill? I adopted from the kill side, naturally)

Unless someone knows of a good one, or one different than I went to. I wont adopt from a shelter.

Now that my boyfriend and I have decided to get a puppy Im going to start researching different breeds. He doesnt want a large dog, he loves little tiny dogs. I dont know much about tiny dogs, I lways had large dogs. Great Pyrinese, CHows, Eskimo Spitz....Im going to have to research small breeds and see what would fit for us. We both love yorkies, and silky terriers.
What we really want is a dog who is playful, but also cuddly. Not a ball of energy 24/7. Someone who knows how to lay down and just like being held and petted, but also very playful. We both have a lot of time to spend with a dog training it and playing with it. Thats why we liked the JRT. She was very playful, but if we picked her up and held he, she was very content and happy in our laps.

Oh well...Im going to research other breeds and see what I come up with.

    Thanks everyone....

I honestly don't think he'd hurt the ferrets.

I remember one time when he was about 1 year old when he went into the ferret room (ya, they have their own room.) Ferrets are very curious so they all came up to him in a swarm to sniff him. And he rolled over and let them check him out. Rabbits or cats (animals he doesn't know)....he will practically pull my arm out of my socket if we see one on a walk.

One time the ferret room door was slightly open and the ferrets escaped through the house and they were alone, unsupervised for a few hours. Nobody was harmed.

I also have a dog sitter with a bunch of dogs and cats. Apparently he barks at them, but the cats are used to annoying dogs and it doesn't phase them. She doesn't seem concerned about him being near them.

FWIW, he's not a ball of energy all the time. He's 3 now and slowing down. He's chilling at my feet right now.

I've had my JRT for 3 yrs now and will tell you that they are amzingly intelligent creatures who are extrememly playful yet affectionate as well. They have abundant amounts of energy and will do "Jack sprints" around the house. They require a LOT of time so if you are on the go, this wouldn't be the dog for you. They are not mean dogs whatsoever, in fact my Dad's JRT is a caregiver dog who goes to hospitals and nursing homes to provide affection and entertainment for patients. My JRT does not dig holes, however they were originally bred for getting mice out of barns. They ARE hunters. They love to chase squirrels, can jump and get a bird in mid air, kill rabbits, just about anything with fur. Basically they are equivalent in behavior to a ping pong ball with the attention span of an ant. Some are more energetic than others, all are easily trainable. There are no two JRT that look alike. They come in a variety of colors and sizes, with some having a smooth short coat while others have a rough or wiry coat. There are long legged and short legged JRT's. They absolutely love to be the center of attention and will surely bring a smile to everyone's face. They have a unique disposition all their own. Many JRT's end up in shelters because people don't realize what a great commitment owning a JRT really takes. If you do have the time, though, the dog will bring you years of enjoyment, making sure you never have a dull moment.
For more info on JRT's, visit http://www.terrier.com/.

I purchased my JRT from a reputable breeder and would reccommend doing the same.

    Best wishes!

Jack russells have a terrible voice to listen to, its a really gutterral growl. If you can tolerate that, they are very smart and quick dogs.

What dog's pitch is soothing to listen to? That's funny you say that b/c the only time my JRT has ever made noises like that is if there is danger around. Normally, she has a very shrill, high-pitched "BARK" that is very loud and sometimes painstaking on the ears but there's really not too many dogs out there that don't bark. Also, the bark really depends on each JRT's personality as they are all unique.

I really wish people would stop breeding them so much. Our shelters are loaded with them too.

A Jack is a Terrier. Terriers are LOADED with energy! These guys always want to play, run jump etc. I was an adopted parent to one about 2 yrs ago. He was a mess. 3 yr old, and no manners. I crate trained him (yep at 3 yrs.) and started with basic commands like "stay" and "quiet," he was a great learner...but then liked only me. Indeed i came across my share of Jacks that run the house..bouncing off couches, chairs....Dah drives ya crazy.

They are not a dog for a person who just wants a cute dog. They do need training. They are very smart. Damn they can jump!!!!

People get them who never owned a dog before so the shelter says and that is a HUGE mistake. They are not a first time pet for the family only because they need lots of attention/training, to be a good dog.

Little shits bite too. Anything with a mouth can bite is what i always say. But i came across my share who grabbed my skirt and pants pulling and then got the leg after they found it. Broke skin, and i was pissed at the owners!!!! Never the animal.

Good luck...i like the little guys

Funny you say that. We have friggin backyard breeders who are adding JR's with female Pit Bull terriers. This makes for even more stamina, a smaller dog and FAST! A JR will kill...they are terriers! Terriers are known for speed, and standing their own!

    This pisses me off.

However, look at a JR and a Bull Terrier. (google it) Bulls look alot like a Jack but the nose is bigger on a Bull Terrier which is a dog breed i love...strongest dog known....and stubborn too.

OMG Emily is that your wall and sofa that your Jack Russell tore up? That's more desctructive than my Maltese shitting all over. The guy I know with two JRT's doesn't seem to have problems like that. At least his furniture and house all look nice. But the female was named Ripley after the character in alien because they said she was such a dominant bitch.

yeah, that's my wall and sofa. I have lots of damage to things in my house.

I have neighbors that have a JRT and they refer to him as the "$10,000 dollar dog" because that's what it cost to replace everything he destroyed.

I'll definitely need new carpet...and it's not potty stains I'm talking about. It's literally pulled out in spots in pretty much every room, including the stairs. I'm not doing it until it's time to move though. I'd be pointless.
