Boy missing since 2002 found alive

ST. LOUIS, Missouri (CNN) -- Two missing Missouri boys, one of them missing since 2002, were found alive in a Kirkwood, Missouri, apartment, and a suspect was arrested, Franklin County Sheriff Gary Toelke said Friday.
Shawn Hornbeck, 15, of Richwoods, Missouri, was last seen riding his bike to a friend's house in October 2002. Richwoods is about 60 miles south of St. Louis.
William Ben Ownby, 13, had been missing since Monday. He was last seen after getting off his school bus in Franklin County, near St. Louis.
Both boys appear to be healthy and have been reunited with their families, Toelke said.
"Obviously there's some very happy people that were here," he said.
Thursday night, two police officers in suburban Kirkwood went to a residence at the apartment complex to serve an unrelated warrant, Toelke told reporters. While there, they noticed a rusty white Nissan pickup truck that matched the description of that sought in the Ownby case and took photos of it. (Watch how police found the boys )
"That resulted in the recovery," Toelke said.
Michael J. Devlin, 41, was arrested and has been charged with one count of first-degree kidnapping, said Franklin County Prosecutor Robert Parks. Devlin was being held on $1 million bail, he said, and more charges are likely.
Hornbeck identified himself to officers, Toelke said. He said Hornbeck's appearance had changed so much since he disappeared that Toelke didn't recognize him.
"He looked like he'd probably grown quite a bit. He was a little taller and his hair was darker," he said.
"I'm sure the parents would have recognized him, but if he'd have walked into the office I don't know that I would have."
Video footage taken at the Franklin County Sheriff's Office showed both boys exiting a vehicle. Ownby's relatives met him at the sheriff's office, and police were notifying Hornbeck's family, Toelke said. (Watch the boys being escorted into the building )
He said officers brought the boys Twinkies and doughnuts after they arrived at the sheriff's office.
Investigators rejoiced at the break in the case.
"All of us have been on Cloud 9," Toelke said at an outdoor news conference in heavy rain. "The last four days, and the things we've gone through ... You know, you have to face the family every day and tell them, 'Well, we haven't had any luck yet,' and that wears on you.
"And then you have something like this happen -- there's nothing to describe it, really."
Authorities divulged few details regarding the recovery, the investigation or the suspect.
"There's a lot of things that we don't know right now," Toelke said.
But he called the recoveries a "complete surprise. ... To have two endings like this is just unbelievable."
Chris Diamond, who shortly after the disappearance in 2002 co-founded the Shawn Hornbeck Foundation for families of missing children, told CNN's Larry King that the foundation's volunteers were ecstatic.
"Hundreds and hundreds of volunteers have helped search. We have scoured so many acres and acres of areas. We have tips from all over the country. We have just searched for him and we've never given up."
"There's kind of a gut feeling," Diamond added. "I had a feeling that hopefully one day we would have the kind of reunion that we're having tonight."
"The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy."

My only thing is... after four years the boy must've had SOME way of getting back home at SOME point... why didn't he?

And not once does it mention the boy himself was happy to be found...

Not if the dude was dangerous. Who knows what sort of conditions and conditioning that kid when through. But the most important thing is that the kid is HOME now. Hopefully the kids wont be too scared after their ordeals. I cant see why he wouldn't be happy to be home. There was no mention of him having a horrid family life. Folks should focus on the positive here.

No shit. And in a lot of kidnappings, the kids are told either that their parents died, or their parents didn't want them anymore. Fun stuff like that. So what kid would try to go back? They are severely brainwashed into the kidnapper's way of thinking.

Anyway.. It's a happy ending. I wish they could all come home like that.

My point is just that he was 15 when he was kidnapped and 19 when he was found... even if the guy was dangerous.. he had to leave some time.. there had to be some instance... and I'd like to see a 15 year old get brainwashed saying his parents were dead when he was riding his bike.

    It's just too strange.

Edit: Although... now that I look at it, I think the writer really fucked his wording.. he must've meant kidnapped at 11.

Yeah, just this sentence makes the entire thing seem otherwise : "Shawn Hornbeck, 15, of Richwoods, Missouri, was last seen riding his bike to a friend's house in October 2002."

It highly implies he was 15 when he went missing.

    Whatever... :/

Default Kid missing since 2002 found in STL

Cops found a kid missing since monday in this freaks apartment in Kirkwood, MO (Suburb of STL not far from me) and GET THIS, they raid the house and find this other kid that's been missing for FOUR YEARS. Some sex offender manager at a pizza place had them both. When that bastard is butt pie for some cellmate, i'll go to church and light a candle.

Good that the kids are home, but i feel REALLY bad for the 15 year old. You KNOW he's fucked in the head, kidnapped and living with some freak sex predator for 4 years. He'll never get that stuff outta his head. Good that they are both home, and that the little one that just got nabbed was only with the freaky pizza guy for a few days.

Yeah, some dollars are needed for some serious therepy that will never really get anywhere, it all depends on him. I mean, how do you heal some shit like that? I mean, it sucks, but this is the kinda shit that either creates crusaders or friggin serial killers.

It kills me, i'm really happy he's alive, but jesus h christ what would something like that do to a guy in his formative years? I mean FOUR YEARS AND HE NEVER RAN OFF? Something was up, it's not that i think he didn't wanna leave, but four years with this sex freak had to mean he was terrified to leave. I mean the sex freak did work at an Imo's pizza place as a manager, he had to have left the house at times. Why didn't the kid exit stage left? He had to have been given some serious programming. It would take an aweful lot to make me want to stick around when a man was inserting his penis in me on an even semi nightly basis.

Why didn't he high tail it outta there while the sexfreak was slingin' pepperoni? That i don't get. I knew a chick that jumped out of a second story window to get away from a guy that locked her in the house (don't ask, it's retarded, and it's over now), what did this freak program this kid with?

Oh my gosh. This is a truly horrible and frightening story...

But I can't help but think of how releived the boy's parents must have been. Four years dissapeared and you just know your child is dead, it seems like. He will be traumatized, but thank God that he is home. And that the other little boy was found so soon.

Well. Kids need to be taken care of and they know it, until a certain age at least. I'd say most kids won't run away from abusive homes because they figure they have nowhere to go, among other things. This kid was probably made to believe his parents were dead or something, and he had nowhere else to go, and this guy was his only "caretaker". This boy was JUST getting to the age he might start to realize he didn't have to stay any longer...but still, no telling what this guy filled his head with.

I ran away from an abusive home, finally at age 16. I wanted out much sooner but I didn't feel I could do anything....until the day I finally did. That day I basically just snapped and ran.

This boy might've snapped and ran at any time from now, if cops hadn't found him first.

    What she said.

Keep in mind it's real easy to brainwash over that amount of time. It's so sad. My heart goes out to those kids.

This reminds me of the Steven Stayner kidnapping in California in 1972. He was held for seven years and the guy who snatched him kidnapped another child years later while Steven was still being held. They eventually ran away and were reunited with their families.

Very sad, though. The shock waves from this kind of thing are far reaching. I hope they can come out of this on top.

^Oh yeah! I remember that one. They made a movie of it... . The sicko who kidnapped and molested him for all those years was also a reverend. Ugh. The guy had try to convince him that his name was "Dennis" all those years, too.

Yep. And years later, Steven's brother became a serial killer. Big surprise there. I think Steven died a few years ago in a motorcycle accident or something. Very sad, tragic life.

Oh man.. You're right. I never heard of his death...

One key witness missing from Parnell's 2004 trial was Steven Stayner himself. On an afternoon in September 1989, Steven was motorcycling home to his wife and two young children after a hard day's work. He may have briefly seen the car speed out of a driveway and onto the road in front of him, but he didn't have enough time to stop or swerve. Steven, who wasn't wearing a helmet, slammed into the car and was pronounced dead upon arrival at a local hospital.

One reason he may not have run away prior to the police discovering him there could be due to a psychological condition (I forget the name of it at the moment) that occurs where the kidnapped person begins to identify with (and, in certain situations, fall in love with) their kidnapper. There have been examples of this in hostage situations related to terrorism, etc, as well. Also, I'm sure in the beginning he may have been locked away in a room and/or threatened with violence or told his family would be hurt if he tried to get away. Even if left unassisted at times, the fear may be so strongly instilled in that person that they wouldn't dare try to escape even if a reasonable opportunity appeared. Not to mention the shame a pubescent boy might be harboring having to describe what had been done to him. My prayers go out to his family and to his emotional and mental well-being.

I think the layperson's term for this is "brainwashing."

A similar thing happened to that Elizabeth Smart girl that was kidnapped from her parent's home in 2004 (I think) in Utah. She was found 9 months later. The guy was keeping her as some kind of wife/sex slave...so sad.

Stolkholm Syndrome, most commonly referenced to the Patty Hearst kidnapping and as Glamazon mention, the Elizabeth Smart kidnapping.

remember the girl that was kidnapped and found alive two years later on?
She'd been kidnapped by the weird religious freak and his common law wife, and possibly sexually molested by both. Even shortly after she'd been kidnapped, she was tied to a stake in some wild park area. She could hear the searchers calling for her but she was so scared she didn't holler back to them. Thus started two years of sexual abuse, brainwashing, et. al.

This little girl was brought to parties wearing a makeshift burka, and was even stopped at a mcdonald's with her kidnappers. She told everyone, "I'm not that one girl everyone's looking for." This is what brainwashing does.

Also, as far as pedophilia goes, a small factoid that I remember from "The Church that forgot Christ" is that pedophiles are sexually molested as children and then go on to molest multiple other victims. Granted, these people are sick and twisted, but think of it as an ever-growing network of victims repeating and enlarging the cycle.

On a related note, I read somewhere that there might be a lawsuit against the vatican for covering up the priests' and nuns' sexual abuse.
