    Default the $2000 tube sock

We took Hank to the animal ER yesterday because he's been vomiting, having unusual BM, and not as hyper as he usually is. A $400 barium series led to a $1500 surgery. Tucked away in his intestines was one of my fiances tube socks.

The good news is he's recovering well and if he keeps his food down tonight, we'll be able to take him home tomorrow. The bad news is we're going to have to dip into our honeymoon fund. I should've gotten pet insurance.

at least you have a sense of humor about it, due to your title of this thread. but man, im so sorry. ER vets totally rape you with their cost. i feel you, im so sorry, hopefully he will have learned. Once one of my dogs ate some pot of my roommate's and licked out the bong, and almost died... well... he had a very expensive high. now i can laugh at it. hopefully this won't set you back too badly and all will be well with him.

    Love it!

    been there...

$1500 hairball on a ferret. The fucked up part is that it was my hair! Even though he's gone now, he lived a very long, good life after the surgery.

I'm sorry- that stuff sucks when it happens. Be very, very careful though...those sock eaters, they do not learn their lesson...

we had this adorable german pointer come in, need the sock removal surgery (and all that entail$), and EIGHT DAYS LATER, she ate another one. And needed another surgery. Poor thing was bones after it all.

hope your doggy feels better soon

ETA- By 'bones', I meant she was very thin. I reread it and thought it sounded more morbid than I meant. She was alive, just skinny and sad. Damn socks.

ask your vet. Most vet's work with a perferred pet insurance company and will usually have info about it for you. I know Banfield (inside Pet Smart) has thier own. The average seems to be about $2000 per year (payable in monthly premiums) and it includes coverage for just about everything.

Thanks for everyone's support. We went to visit him yesterday and although he's tired, he's still alert and chipper. I called the vet last night and he's holding down water and food and his temperature hasn't spiked. I'm waiting for Scott to wake up so we can call them and see if Hank is ready to come home.

I'll post pic of my poor baby post surgery. It's really hard not to giggle when you watch him move around in that plastic cone collar...

As I am a crazy petmom myself, I am very glad that you A) caught the problem B) acted on it by taking your little guy to the vet, and C) were able to afford his treatment to get him better! I worry so much about something dreadful happening to my catface and not being able to afford the crazy cost of vet care! Maybe I should look into pet insurance too... shall we put this on our respective to-do lists?

Snuggles for Hank, I hope he stays away from socks and so forth in the future and lives a long, happy, medically uneventful life.

I'm done a bit of research on pet insurance and I think overall it's a ripoff. You're better off saving that money you would have spent on insurance and use it for a medical fund.

The insurrance doesn't cover routine care (like exams and vaccines) and doesn't cover pre-existing conditions.

Mia M, I am so glad your pooch is okay! I have one son and one dog, who is like my second child... it would break my heart if something happened to the guy. He had a sock issue when he was a pup, socks and books. But we curbed him of the habbit very quickly with training and hot suace.

Yes, put a pic up! I love to see pet pics!

This reminded me, I worked with a hippie-granola chick who said she knew of a Rottweiler that ate a baggie of weed..."& was never the same again." Rottweilers are very sweet so I'm wondering how a pot-addled one could get any MORE laid-back.

I had a Australian Dingo years ago that did this very thing... and she did it another time a few years after the first time.. sock eaters don't learn their lessons. I was always surprised that these eaters don't throw up the socks before they get that far...

I'm glad your Hank is doing better.

Hank says thanks for all the well wishes... We had a long talk about the whole sock eating thing. In the past, he's either thrown up or passed his "treats" but this will help remind him he isn't invincible for a little while. Meantime, everything (and I mean everything!) is put out of canine reach for the rest of his natural life.

We're very happy to have Hank the Tank back in the house. He's tired, but well. I made him boiled beef and macaroni which will be his diet for the next 6-10 days.

I took some pics of the patient. The last one shows the scar on his tummy, his shaved belly, and the bruise on his leg from his IV. However, he's cute even when he's recovering!
