Default what do I need to know about sew-in extensions?

    Okay-- here's what I know:
    1. it looks funny if you put it into a high ponytail. A middle of the head ponytail doesn't look so bad though.
    2. it can last 2 months if I take care of it.
    3. the super expensive hair wefts are great for curling...and what else? Don't get as nappy? Medium grade hair as long as it's human hair is just fine.
    4. get my hair at a beauty salon place
    5. go to the ghetto to get my braids done
    6. TIP

    What else?
I'm especially curious about the grade of human hair I should get. I want to get the longest type I can.

I have black hair. I'd like to get blonde or ash hair sewn in at the nape of my neck. I've seen girls do the inverse of this hair color and really liked it. Will it look hideous since it's a weave?

After I get sick of it-- maybe a month, month and a half, I want to screw around with the hair color for the last couple of weeks to do a hair experiment. Has anyone ever colored their weave AFTER it's been put in?

    What should I tip?

What happens when the hair gets loose? Does if fall out? Or will it pretty much stay in until I undo the braid?

I wouldn't recommend the sewing in of extensions., or you may get big bald spots where the braids are that they sew the hair on to. (when you shampoo your hair, it has a tendency not to dry and can moldy and break off)
    I would recommend latex wefts.

^^^ I have NEVER heard of this from my friends who have had extensions.

I'm assuming a bit of blowdrying would help this problem?

Also-- never heard of latex wefts. what are those?

Much easier and better on your hair.
You basically take a long chunk of hair I recommend European silky), apply the latex bond, starting at the nape of your neck and go from there. I think they call them horseshoe extensions, but don't quote me on that!

Oh, and sorry, the hair comes on a long bundle called a weft. Just put the latex on the weft (make sure your lines are straight, it helps to have a friend to do it with) and voila! Long beautiful hair.

ergh...I've looked up what I THINK you're talking about. It doesn't seem to last as long as sew in wefts. I think I'm going to try the sew ins but I'll definitely be using a hair dryer because I've read that that's SOP, otherwise you're right-- they won't dry.

I'm curious if instead of one track crossing my midline I can have two tracks, one for the left side, one for the ride side and then multiply by how many layers of hair I want. That way I can at least rock pigtails without having the weird ridge.

I'm kind of considerig pinch braiding the lower half of my hair-- that looked really cool. It might look odd only doing half, but I don't want all my scalp showing, you know?

here's one website recommended on another thread:

If I have bone straight hair that's oh two feet long, would it look weird sewing in wavy hair? I think it'd look okay?

Edit: According to this next website, every 6-8 weeks I can go back to my braider, have my weave undone, everything washed, and then have the same wefts sewn back in. Is this true???

Also-- does anyone know how expensive it is to have handmade wefts? This website says that's better than machine made.

    Alright,

I've wore weaves as protective styling for three years ( I wore them all my life, but just recently found out that a good weave if done properly can help your hair grow)

Whether you get it sewn in, or use glue both can be pretty harmful if you don't take proper care of them and/or go to a beautician that is more concerned about her money than your hair. The best way to tell if the beautician is right for you and your hair is a quick consultation. If she's not even willing to discuss the health of your hair, than keep it moving. I don't care if she'e Georgias finest and wins every Bronner Bro show, yes you want an awesome weave, but don't compromise the health of your hair. Here is my ATF hair site, these ladies aren't only focused on hair, but the overall health of it.

I have to run real quick, but I promise I will be right back to further elaborate.
Also, I'm not too sure how you will be able to achieve the pigtail part with a sew in w/o the bulk. If you want the weave to have a more natural look your best bet would be to have it glued in. I have a sew in right now, and I find it hard to imagine two pig tails because the weft must be sewn in. Your stylist would literally have to do vertical braids, and divide your hair and braids in half, but than your style wouldn't be that flexible, you would have to pretty much keep it in pigtails. But trust me, if you can dream you can be-weave it.

do you think i can just have two lines

like instead of -------------------------------------------------- across my scalp I can have
    --------------------- ----------------------- so I can do pigtails?

p.s. I wish Pryce had that $5.00 annual membership thing (though it is through paypal and they're asses to SW not allowing us to post payment through them) like on the forum you posted.

Yeah, exactly. Only your hair will be braided straight back like cornrows. Not twisted around the head like a crown.

By braiding the hair back in cornrows, as opposed in circular braids or zigzags, it will make it less likely for you to experience breakage or damage once you take the wefts out because their won't be a ton of strain on your natural hair.

Just remember to ask your stylist to braid the braids back exactly like cornrows. Damn, I wish you were near me, I know exactly what I would do to get that look. I want to do your hair myself now I love weave

I use those in combination with hairpieces I get for $10.99 at the Korean beauty supply store. Seriously, people always say they "loooooove" my hair. haha. As long as I keep it about the same length and color, guys never notice.

    I love fake hair!

Hey Layka-- if I do what you suggest, 'straight back in cornrows" then i'll be able to do pigtails and have my hair look normal when they're not in pigtails?

I actually have pretty long hair so i don't need a full head of extensions.

i was only hoping for between 2-5 wefts (I want super stripper hair) placed along the back of my head.

Well, since your hair is long you should be able to. I wish I could find a pic, hmmm
    imagine this:

-part an imaginary part in the center of your head ( just like you would to wear your hair in ponytails)

    - you will plait your hair into two sections seperated by a small part down the center

    - that means your beautician will have too sew the weft into your hair by sections, b/c you won't be able to have the entire track sewn in w/o it interfering with the part

-A small amount of your hair will need to be left out in the cornrows, so the cornrows will still be going back, but every other row needs to be a thin layer of hair. This will make it so your tracks are covered.

    - that means your hair will be plaited in cornrows going back, but it will go like this
    *moving vertically*

    braid braid
hair (thin amount) CENTER PART hair ( thin amount)
    braid braid
hair (thin amount) hair (thin amount)
    braid braid
hair (thin amount) hair (thin amount)

Are you following me? I tried to make a verbal diagram, lol

Yeah, if you have caucasion hair then you don't need all of your hair cornrowed. When I do weaves, I leave a small gap for pigtails and only 2-4 rows. They last about 2 months..
You want 100% REMY human hair! It won't frizz up and get gross.. plan on spending at least $75-200 depending on colour, length, if it's handtied or machine and quality. It also depends on where you live! When I go into south phx to buy hair, the same brands are $20 cheaper then north scottsdale! Price shop around town and then online. factor in shipping & waiting.

^^^ Huh, please correct me if I'm not reading your post correctly, but I'm African-American and I don't have to cornrow my entire head when I apply extensions. I leave enough out so the weave appears realistic.

I just started working at a salon and I relized that getting verticle braids with the hair sewed in horizontally is much harder to wash because you cant really reach the scalp that well.

in FL all the african american girls did a "full" weave.. i guess it would be called a "full" weave? none of them wanted their hair to show. maybe it's different in different parts of the country? it would also depend on how long your hair is.

^^agreed, but getting a full weave is an option as an African American woman, not a necessity. Sorry, I just always try to dispel ethnic hair stereotypes, and I was initially alarmed when you said : Yeah, if you have caucasion hair then you don't need all of your hair cornrowed.

I'm not offended, but a full weave is a style option for many women of color. I used to wear a full weave as a protective style to retain length ( and save my ends). It just concerns me that people may assume that full weave on a woman of color = no hair.
