    Default Atkins

Okay, I finally gave in and decided to try this diet after seeing my friend's results... and it works! I've lost four pounds already. According to him, you drop a lot really fast because a lot of it is water weight, and then it remains steady.

I'm curious about people's experiances on this diet. I did a search but I want to hear more (and rant about it a little). Personally, it was great at first since I never felt overly full... the food digested so fast... But I'm not feeling very well today at all (I think it's day three?). I don't have any veggies in the house but I just want to eat a truckload of tomatoes! (Which is okay to do on Atkins, right?) I want milk! I want bread! I want fruit! Just looking at anything in my fridge makes me want to puke. So I'm sitting here drinking water and feeling nauseous.

You're going thru the "initiation" phase or whatever it's called? I know at first you're supposed to go into ketosis, which is hard on your body. So, I haven't been on the diet, but I have experienced ketosis... when I had eating problems.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ketosis

I personally don't really like what I know of Adkins. I know it's healthy to reduce refined sugars and those sorts of carbs, but, eh. I remember reading and for awhile the carbs seemed really, really low. Like too low.

    Take care of yourself!

I did Atkins for two weeks about ten years ago. I lost alot of weight but nothing in the dress-size department, which led me to conclude it was all water weight. I didn't see the point of cutting out carbs for that, so I quit.

i lost 17 pounds on it. kept it all off (2years) untill the holidays this year. i gained back 7.
i'm back on it as of last monday. i've lost 3 pounds so far. only 4 more to go!

what you were feeling today will pass. i have done this diet for years. this past week i was sooo tired and didnt feel well for about a day. it's your body switching from burning glucose first to burning fat first (ketosis)

dont give in. you have to start all over again. you will find once you do eat some of those things later, they wont taste as good as you remember.
you want tomatoes because it's a fruit=sugar. you can have a VERY small amount of tomatoe on your salad but dont eat a bunch of it.

what i do for sweets/dessert is sugarfree jello with HEAVY whipping cream whipped topping.

Any diet that prohibits fresh fruit and vegetables, while considering eggs and fried meat to be healthy, is NOT a good diet. Atkins himself died of heart problems, and prolonged use of this diet has led to kidney failure and dysmenorrhea. Besides, when you eliminate carbohydrates from your diet, you're also eliminating fiber (leading to constipation) and your brain cuts back on seratonin (making you irritable and angry; researchers have dubbed this "Atkins Attitude").

Cutting back on carbs and eating healthy, that's great. But eliminating fruit and minimizing vegetables - very bad idea. We are not cats, and our dietary needs are not like cats'.

    ^^ agreed.
And tomatoes are high glycemic, meaning, they aren't part of atkins

she asked about the diet not why you guys think it's bad. thats your opinion.
FYI it does not prohibit vegs. it does prohibit fruits AT FIRST because of the sugar.
those are in the very first stages of the diet. there are 4. i eat tomatoes on my salad everynight.
atkins did not die of heart disease, he fell down and hit his head.

ya know i'm so sick of the atkins bashers. it works for alot of people, i know it's the only thing that ever worked for me. if you dont like it fine. please check your facts before you state them

ps this isnt "atkins attitude" lol, whatever that is

II watch my carb in take but I would never stop eating carbs. That is a shock to your system. Other than being cruel to yourself and what you are craving.

I think that's the only way it can work long term....if you do it all the time. if you have a carb binge, you'll gain like 5 pounds.

At least I did when I had pizza and beer one night after doing a month of low carb.

Yeah, it does work, but lots of things work for losing weight. Americans don't have problems with the losing part. It's the gaining it back part!

I have to really watch my carb intake. The only carbs I get right now are 1/2 cup of sushi rice everyday with clear soup and ginger salad. Hot watery substances keep my tummy full.
This diet has kept me off laxitives for the past week and has been working.

Most people think they're following "Atkins"...but they're really just eating all protein.

If you are eating all meat, lots of butter...that's not Atkins.

Atkins enourages lean meats, and lots of vegetables and nuts, especially the first 2 weeks. Things such as fruits are prohibited during this phase because the "sweetness" in fruit can encourage you to binge...people are so used to starchy/sweet diets any reminder can cause those insane cravings for cake or whatever.

(Tomatoes, as a fruit, are prohibited, at least during the first phase)

I highly recommend reading the book by Dr. atkins before beginning this diet, rather than just eliminating carbs...even Atkins himself said carbs are necessary, it's just that most Americans consume the wrong kind of carbs, and make it the bulk of their diet.

I haven't eaten meat in so long. I only eat what I crave. Which is mostly salad and soup.

    arghhh
i have the book. it DOES NOT recommend lots of veggies and nuts... wtf.
and yes tomatoes are allowed in small pieces on your salad at least thats what my book says.

emily i stated in my post i have kept it off for TWO YEARS i have not stayed on the diet the whole time. i just try to stay away from sugar. i have had tons of carb binges over the last two years. i only gained this holiday seasona as i went crazy with food, all kinds. i knew i was doing it to myself. thats why im back on atkins i know i can drop the 7 lbs in a month. i've already lost 3 of those

where are all these atkins experts coming from. i mean im no expert but im a bookish kinda girl and i have done major research on this. most of what everyone said in this thread is not true.

^what book do you have? After Atkins' death, the people who run his company "revised" his program, removing some things, adding others. This version is actually what has been connected with health problems, such as bad cholesterol.

The best version is the book last written by Atkins himself.

I just started another thread about quitting. I felt like shit, like utter, utter shit. I think the diet is beneficial for some, but I personally cannot restrict my vegetables to 20 grams a day for two weeks. I tried because I wanted fast results, but I'm going to have to go back to the Zone/South Beach/GI approach, which worked well for me when I followed it. I just don't do well with a load of saturated fats and little complex carbs/veggies.

I bought the merch at so if anybody wants it PM me.

What most people don't realize is that the Atkins diet was designed for morbidly obese people who need to lose weight rapidly because their lives are in danger. It's not great for you, so it's really only to be used when the alternative is worse.

I do admit that some good has come from the Atkins diet. Diabetics are having an easier time shopping for low-carb stuff.

Well, I heard all the hype about how bad atkins was for you... but I really want to lose ten pounds. I'm young, it won't kill me. I'm feeling a lot better today. I kinda went overboard the day before with the hotdogs and all (I was watching football and all excited that I could eat that shit on a diet... wow, I'm over it! No more! Blech)... Chicken and turkey and some leafy greens... eggs and chicken broth... I bought some cherry tomatoes last night... I guess I can't eat the whole container like I'd planned, lol. Velvet, what do YOU generally eat on this thing? I need some ideas. I looked at the low carb tortillas (I wanted to make wraps and stuff), but they had 19g of carbs in one tortilla. Psh.

I'm an Atkins hater. Animal protein (especially the way its produced now) is full of carcinogens. So first you can go on the Atkins diet and then the chemo diet!

You will look so thin and FAB!

Wow, I never bought any of the Atkins books. I'm glad you mentioned squash! I love it, and it has the mushy pasta-ish texture I crave! Thanks
