Default getting back into pole work

ugh...i've been practicing on my Super Pole for a good 30-45 minutes and I'm freakin' sore and exausted already. I can't seem to get a good grip on the pole. I keep wiping it down with a towel and I still seem to slip. Any advice? I used to do basic pole tricks but I quit doing them a LONG time ago and now it seems pretty hard to get back into it. Oh and the skin on my arm (especially my wrist) is so red and kinda burning. will this go away with time?

All pole/friction burns will subside as your skin gets used to being back on the pole. To help your grip I'd suggest giving your pole a good clean with alcohol and making sure your skin is clean too. If this still doesnt help try and get some Gorilla Grip (google it) its like a tacky towel and can help a lot when practising for long periods, hope thats helped!!

I have a stainless steel pole so it's pretty much impossible for me to get a good grip on it! I went to a sporting goods store and just got some of that gymnists (sp... it's early ) chalk for like, a buck or something... and it's lasted a really really long time.

Thanks for the advice. I'm gonna give it some time. I started to get so frustrated cuz i could barely do the basic stuff I used to. It's not like it'd make me more money at work to do amazing pole tricks, i just want to be able to do them for the fun of it.

do you use it at the club? if so, doesn't it glow and get EVERYWHERE? i thought about it, but i'm pretty sure it'd show up all over the place in the black lights.

I prefer to wipe my PS SuperPole down with windex wipes. I remember when I first got it, it was slick as hell and it took a lot of wiping to get it "grippy". Hope this helps!

Lysol Disinfectant Spray works well to clean the pole (it's mostly alcohol.)

That's what I thought at first, but nope. You just rub it in. I really don't use it at the club since their pole is brass and so it's sticky enough... It's just the one I have at home (why do they even MAKE stainless steel poles, ugh!). I HAVE used it at the club before, like when I moved my first upside down trick from my pole at home to the pole at work just to be safe. I have a black light at home so I can test stuff out first. ... I still get the burning/blistery sensation on my fingers if I practice too long, though.

I tried a PS superpole recently...that grip is just off. It's not you, it's the pole. Try getting some gorilla grip / golf grip type stuff.

I've also heard (from Alena D) that men's shaving cream rubbed on the pole and then allowed to dry will make it grippy. Haven't tried that yet, so dunno.

I checked out some websites for the gorilla grip. Can I get that stuff at stores? I don't usually buy stuff online.

we use it at our club too, leaves an ok grip, not the best though. i usually buy it and bring it in, bc the owners just give us windex, which is great for making it shiney, not so great if you don't want the gonno-herpe-sypha-lydia that the girl who danced before you had...

You should get a better grip as you get back into doing pole work and your grip is stronger. You could try to avoid doing tricks right now and just work on strength and getting comfortable with the pole again. Just gripping the pole at chest level and lifting yourself up a few inches off the floor is great for stengthening your grip, forearms, and shoulders without being exhausting. To strengthen your legs you can climb a bit up and then hold on with just crossing your thighs (keeping your hands off the pole).

No one has mentioned it: Metholated Spirits. I swear by it! Use some metho sprayed onto a paper towel to wipe down the pole before/after use and "Bob's your uncle" ! I always get a good gripe after wiping it down with metho. Plus it is a disinfectant too .... and rather cheap to purchase (at any supermarket).

OMG, my roommate built me a removable pole in his shop, it is beautiful. I love it!

But to be honest I was terrified to get on it as it is his first venture into the pole making realm. Luckily it turned out to be totally safe.

Anyway, I was playing around with it way too much yesterday (never been big on pole tricks) and just coughing today makes my whole right abdomen hurt. I got a webcam too so I kept recording things and then playing them back to see the progress from total dork to not so dorky.

Ahh, the joys of seeing a 200+ lbs man try to imitate the moves on verticaldance.com is PRICELESS!!!
