Default Was I followed? What the hell?

It's freezing, freezing outside. Minus 25 Celcius. God only knows what that is in Farenheit-howeveritsspelled...Cold enough for car batteries to die and toes to fall off. Cold that is unsafe.

So I pull into my apartment's parking lot as I just got home, and this car I notice pulls in right behind me, both blocking my car from backing out, and blocking my entrance into my building. It's 330AM, and there's no one around, and I'm trapped because it's too cold to try to go somewhere besides in my car or my building. The guy in the car rolls down his window, and gives me some story about how "oh you must live here? I just moved from Vancouver, my atm card is magnetized...blah blah...insulin, diabetes, blah blah...can i write you a check if? blah...". I am looking around wondering if anyone would hear me if I scream. I am not thinking, just reacting. I say "I have cash" and give him the $80 he asked for. He wrote me some sketchy looking cheque, without a name on the top (I noticed when I got it)...He got my first and last name for the cheque...

I handed him the cash, grabbed the check, and went back into my car as he pulled away. Now I'm in my apartment. What the fcuk just happened? I started to wonder all this stuff...he did look old, but why the uck would he be cruising around at nearly 4am looking for insulin cash? Whose going to fill a script right this second? Where did he come from? I should have been paying more attention...Could he have followed me from work? Because whoever he is, he now knows my name and address (he didn't look familiar). And I didn't get his license plate. I don't know what i was thinking...I am (obviously) incredibly tired...I've been up for over 20hours today, I was panicky...I just wanted him to go, and I thought he would if I threw him the cash he wanted. I thought "stay back from his car, don't let him get close". I mean, I'm a paranoid gal sometimes, but WHAT was that? Weird at least. At worst, I dunno. Anything I can/ should do?

Ugh I would have said I dont have cash please leave me alone. I know you carry a cell phone you should have pulled it out and said 'im calling 911' or something. Get yourself some mase... find out if you can get a driver for work and pay him to walk you to your building for the next little bit. Or if your apt has security talk to your security guys and explain what happend and offer to pay them like $10 - $20 a night to walk you from your car to your building for the next month or two(get their number so you can call them when your 5min away).. keep your doors locked and get mase(im sure someone at your club can help you find some).

    Im sorry this happend

Oh HELL No that's what a hospital is for. You are not a hospital, a pharmacy, an over-the-counter money exchange. You are a girl who has a poke-your-fucking-eye out 8" stiletto and had it been ME I certainly would have threatened this if he tried anything. Please buy something that Chrissy mentioned, and learn how to use whatever you buy properly to defend yourself. Tell the bouncers at your club about this, yes, but this could have happened to you regardless of dancing... pehaps he knew you were a stripper and saw a CASH opp'y, but then again, you are a young woman, and when you are by yourself, this fact alone makes you "vulnerable" to those who might go after you. It's a sick fucking world.

Maybe he is from Vancouver, because that's a popular scam out here...although not generally in a 'blocking you from entering your residence' kind of way, more like they'll hit you up at the gas station or pull over on the street downtown.

You were scammed (mugged, pretty much, imo), but it wasn't necessarily anything more sinister than that.

Be careful. OMG minus 25, I DON'T miss that! I went snowboarding the other day and it was minus 15 at the peak...In my full snow gear I was whimpering.

    WHOOOOOAAAAAA!

    How freaky is that?

*If the man needed insulin and had a check why didn't he take his check to the source of insulin?*

Anyway, yes, unfortunately this lunatic knows what you drive, when you come home, that you carry cash, where you live, all kinds of things.

I would go to the police and tell them so that whn this happens again or to someone else, they know what they're dealing with. Who knows, maybe this guy's wanted in Vancouver or somewhere else for something.

Point is, it could very well happen again because you were a source and the system he used worked so it's likely he'll use it again.

I know you'll start keeping a closer eye on your surroundings after this.

I sed to have a friend who'd call me every single time she pulled into her condo complex and I'd stay on the phone with her until she was safe in her house. A couple times she said there were suspicious cars around that don't belong. You should have a friend to talk you through your entry every single night, maybe a fellow coworker you trust who's already up that late.

Very scary, indeed, I'd be freaked out beyond explanation.

Sadly cops in Canada dont give a fuck about this shit.... hell i've gone to the police in hysterics with fingerprints fresh on my neck from my father trying to strangle me and they told me to come back when I calmed down

Cops here dont care about shit.

Molly you have my number... pm me the times you get home and I will make sure im available to talk to you every night when you get home.

I understand being scared; but it's just a scam. Most of the time (not always, but mostly) people are running these scams in alternative to beating and robbing you and blocking your residence is probably his way of ensuring that you have to stop and listen to him. Although there is nothing like being pressured for cash by a strange man at 4.00 AM after you've left your club to make you feel vulnerable. I'd call the police; the scam in itself is not likely high priority, but if he was menacing you they might take that more seriously.

And - never say "yes I live here." Say "I'm staying with a friend" or "No, my boyfriend lives here". There are lots of crazy people near my house. I've said that like a thousand times. Enough to almost believe that an imaginary boyfriend has signed my lease.

I've never heard of this scam... but while I was reading your post, I was thinking, "this sounds like a scam". I would definately call the police as Jenny said, and get some pepper spray. If it worked the first time (or if he DID follow you from the club), he might come back.

Creepy! But yes, he did scam you, thsoe questions he asked though, that creeps me out.

There was a time we had problems in grocery store parking lots at night, people would come up to you with one dilema or another....
One night a guy walked my direction when I was alone, and I could just kinda tell her was on his way to ask me something, so jsut as he says "excuse me.." I say VERY loudly....."Don't approach me, I can hear you just fine from there." That made him look around because I was so loud, he says "never mind."

Becareful sweetie, and yes, I second that, mace, pepper spray, antything at all.

Of course it's a scam. If you live in a not so good area, people will knock on your door with some story asking for money. Or even in apartment complexes.

Thats great Jenny; I'll remember that line ffr.

UGH that IS scary! I would call and report him anyways. There could have been other incidents in the area that are just like your 4am encounter. Do you remember what he looks like? If so write everything you can down now so you dont forget when you file the police report. Glad you are home safe and warm.

Next time someone tries this "insulin money" scam, act genuinely concerned & tell them that your father or brother is a police officer & if the person in question needs help, you can call the cops RIGHT NOW and get him preferential treatment in the emergency room because you could NOT forgive yourself if someone froze to death in a diabetic coma & you could have helped....You see where I'm going here.

I've had checks before that didn't have my name on top, I think they were the starter checks for when I opened my checking account. It could be that? Go to the bank and ask them to verify the check for you. If it's a fake, go to the police and file a report. If this person starts scamming more people, are least they'll be able to link them together. I've done stupid things like this before, usually when I'm tired or if they really catch me off guard and alone. You kind of panic. Just always be cautious when you're going home. All the "you should have, next time..." etc isn't going to help you now. Just take this as a lesson learned and be more aware. Oh and I agree with the mace. I have some in the car and in different locations of my home. I'm also looking into ccw laws so I can carry a weapon in my car. I've dealt with battery before and sexual assault so I'm paranoid. Not just for coming and going to work, but for every day instances. I have a daughter to think about, it's a scary world and people take advantage all the time. Look into your options so you wont be scared in the future, especially if this guy is stalking you.

Scary story. I always have endorsed a few different measures to keep girls safe. I like the idea of mace or pepper but realistically if a guy wanted to attack you or rape you he could fend off the sprays pretty easy (especially if he is a larger guy or has had some military or tear gas past training)
I usually tell girls to try a few minor things first spend some of that hard earned dancer money on your car and buy an alarm system that comes equipped with a panic button (It will make a hell of alot of noise) and get ONstar. With the push of a button you can summon the cops and be in direct contact with someone (who can also record sounds or noises)
I also knew a girl that actully turned her car into a SAFE CAR by having the windows made special with saftey glass ( much harder to break but not bulletprooof)
In any case be careful ladies, some of us Dj's do worry about you

Okay, don't feel dumb about what you did. You freaked out, we all freak out sometimes. He was probably just some weirdo who was hustling money outta you, and if he was going to do anything to you, he allready knew where you lived so giving him your name didn't make it worse. If you're really worried, take the check to the police and explain what happened.

Agreed with Cally - pull out the cellphone and call 911, announcing to the guy that you're doing it.

This sounds more to me like an addict than a robbery.

Addicts often state a need for some other (prescription) drug as the reason they are desperate for money, as a sympathy ploy. It's definitely a dangerous situation - just offering my take on it from personal experience when people in semi-deserted areas asked for money in the middle of the night.

Did you try to cash his check? What happened? Don't beat yourself up over it--it wasn't that much money and you are safe, which is all that matters. Think of it as a nudge from your guardian angel to pay more attention to your surroundings and get more sleep in the future so it doesn't happen again.

Screw the mace get a tazer gun or a permit to carry a real gun. Unfortunatley as strong and independent as we are. We are still at the mercy of most men if they decided to do us harm. They are bigger stronger and more aggressive than most women. We have to protect ourselves.

A self defense class might make you feel more secure with yourself and definetly some kindof weapon.

Becareful and be aware of your surroundings for a while.

At the Temperature you stated Pepper spray would have been worthless unless kept in a warm pocket. The propellant would have been to cold to expand and at best the pepper mix would have just ran over you fingers. Taser too. The cartridges use a compressed gas to propel the electrodes.

So if Canadian Law will allow a firearms safety class and a Glock 17 will be your best option.

As a nonlethal option and because you come and go at night frequently. Check this out. Very bright (blinding!) flashlight. They pull up ask stupid questions shine it right into their face. Can't see you, you can see them.
