Default Fake nails and chem lab

I was looking up info on finding a salon near me to get some (very short) fake nails...but I am taking two chem labs this semester and I am wondering if the chemicals are going to be harmful to the nails. I have never had them before. I am a clumsy geek, and last semester I burned myself with hydrochloric acid and it took forever for my skin to lose that cracking dryness.

Just get regular mamicures/pedicure. Fake nails are not good for your nails in general. Trust me if you have problems growing your nails you will not after you get regualr manicures.

I worked as a chemist for three years in a lab and also took many, many labs in school and never had a problem with fake nails as long as they were somewhat on the short side and I wore the proper safety materials! Not sure what year you are in, but be somewhat careful around formic acid as it will seep through and burn without your knowledge for at least a few minutes (clothes, nails, or otherwise!) ouch! There is no reason for smart girls to not feel pretty! Good luck this semester!

Shouldn't you being wearing gloves while being exposed to any chemicals? I took chem courses/labs during college and it was required to be covered from head to toe (gloves, closed toed shoes, lab coat, pants, eye safety goggles, etc) . I suppose every university/college has different standards though.

^ I've never had to wear gloves, but goggles, lab coat and closed-toe shoes yeah.

As long as you wash your hands whenever you spill something, and be careful with the NaOH (that wil dry your nails out like crazy), I wouldn't worry. There's a chance they'll get messed up, but probably not.

just wear gloves. We always had to wear gloves and goggles. I had real hooker nails in my last lab too. No problem. Even if you're not required to wear gloves the lab coordinator surely offers them.

Well, they are flamible. When I was younger I had to be careful lighting my bowl (yes, I smoke pot) because a couple of times when I wasn't paying attention... *pooF!* my nails lit up. I had acrylics, not sure if it's the same for silk or fiberglass nails. I get gels now, but they're practically the same as acrylics. Just shinier.

En Vogue gel nails. When I was a nail tech, this is the product I used. There is no chemical that can eat through those babies---the gel is a highly advanced non-acrylic UV-cured resin similar to resins used in dentistry. The only way that product can be removed is through filing it off. Is crystal clear, strong, flexible, and never yellows, unlike acrylic. More expensive, but definitely worth it.
