    Default I'm totally eavesdropping

on this conversation in my coffee shop. It is two women and man complaining
    a) on how TV has killed conversation
    b) about being single
    c) about how on all the first dates she goes on, all these men talk about themselves.
    d) the possible remedies to this situation (apparently snottily asking "well, is there anything you wanted to know about me?")

It occurs to me that a) you should try talking about TV - because before TV nobody ever talked about radio, movies, books, periodicals, theatre or recitals. Discussion of pop culture is entirely unique to us and that for the rest maybe she could try doing something like BEING INTERESTING!

I'm a bitch. I'm judgemental. She would probably say that is why no man wants me.

So... were they filming a new "comedy" show for the CW or what?

Maybe. I could get up and discreetly look for cameras.

Sorry - I'm just listening and thinking "My god, you sound like the most boring woman alive. No wonder these guys are all discussing themselves."

Reminds me of some train rides I've had.... all I could do was pump up the volume on my cd player.
One more cup of coffee for the road,
One more cup of coffee 'fore I go
    To the valley below....

Slowly moseying my way to the exit.

I will take a good read over TV myself. Many great discussions have been brought up, fought over, and taught to us because of books!

Media is hype most of the time. And movies...well they are Hollywood.

Well, I do think TV has impacted our ability/inclination/wherewithal to focus; of course the other side of that is the ability to focus and understand several things at once, and the ability more rapidly absorb information. Overall, I think the first ability is the superior one, but...

On the other hand, I'm sitting here (coffee shop at bay and bloor, more or less) looking out these huge windows, thinking... not about the tasks at hand but "Hmm. Look at all the Tiffany's bags. None of those people look like they can afford to buy that much at Tiffany's" and "Pottery Barn: Kids? Exactly what kind of upscale housewares do children need? This isn't like clothing" occasionally interspersed with just listening to what the people are saying around me. I'm like a hamster - just staring out the window like it is the greatest show ever aired.

I know I eaves drop too. I cant help it; its a guilty pleasure like celebrity gossip blogs. People sure do talk about the craziest things. People are the most interesting things sometimes.

You know what's funny...if TV has killed conversation, the Internet has brought it back. Except for porn, the single most common thing that we use it for is to congregate and talk to other people.

Yep. I eavesdrop also and try to contain my giggles... I once overheard an entire argument between a guy and a girl, only he wasn't participating. it was just her going OFF and then when she'd ask him something, she'd interject again and say, 'oh I know what you are going to say.. you are going to say__________"

It sounded absolutely ridiculious and I felt really bad for the poor dude sitting there taking all that messed up crap.

Other people's lives are interesting.. therefore, we are interesting to someone else... try doing something to see if you get a reaction= pick your nose or do something silly that someone would not normally do... fun stuff.

I was at Applebee's yesterday with the fiance and he brought some fun eavesdropping to my attention. It was this group of pissy looking fat women sitting right behind him, complaining about their husbands. It was all about how the husbands actually wanted to be able to use some of the money they earn. These women had put their husbands on allowances. They gave their husbands lunch allowances, beer allowances, nights with the guys allowances, etc. And they wonder why their husbands end up hating them.

Maybe they ride 'em, but I'm pretty sure they don't need 'em.

On the other hand, bicycles don't need fish, either.

I was eavesdropping on some stock tips from a former coworker to a current one. Insider trading during happy hour anyone?

Oh, oh, I do! And I'm not in your jurisdiction!

Actually I'm just listening to a guy next to me talk about how he is always invited out to dinner with people trying to set him up - he really thinks he's a catch. And honestly, what I'm thinking is "You're a student, and you're a little homely. I think they are trying to do YOU the favour, not the girl."

Maybe he has a really good personality.

Best return on a stock I ever got was on a tip from a very drunk lawyer in a bar who had been working with the company's investors. I bought a bunch--this was during the go-go days before the tech crash--and did exceedingly well on the little money I risked. (I got out quickly, figuring it was better not to be greedy and tempt fate or the SEC hounds.)
