    Default Herbs/supplements for lowering cholesterol?

For my dad that is. I take him to his appts. b/c he doesn't understand certain things in English and likes to have me there for security. Fist found his high chol. last Feb or so, got on lipitor, was only taking it twice a week, tweaked his diet a bit, and got the # to 183. For the past 4 mths or so started taking the lipitor religiously, kept eating well, except for Holidays and on dec 30 found his # @ 207 AND now has high blood pressure. Doc said that HBP could be attributed to the Lipitor as he is taking it the way he should now. Doc said we'll be changing meds very soon. My dad's a landscaper so none of this is due to lack of excercise, he works very strenuously. Anybody know of any supplements/herbs/homeopathic things to lower chol., he gets quite frustrated w/ this whole meds thing, says the gov't is the biggest bunch of drug dealers there are

PS- I hear fiber is posed to be good, anyone know what form he should be taking of it?

Oatmeal is excellent for a food. Garlic supplements help. As does the BIGGIE...Niacin. Now there is a "No Flush" niacin on the market. Niacin is excellent, great reviews for people running high, very high. But when taken as needed it does make a person (many) flush, feel hot and it's very uncomfortable.

No flush, slow in the system works VERY VERY well. He should talk to his doctor first.

I know many people from the hospital who will not take drugs. Niacin is working great for them. Many as far as their numbers going down 50 less or more!!!!

    Look into it for him.

My dad suffers with High Cholesterol we bought him this Dummies guide book and there are plenty of low cal foods - even Floria do low cal margarines and low cal drinks for the morning and also get your dad to have porridge in the morning this also helps and for drink wise drink green tea instead of coffee. The dummies guide book here's the website....

    http://www.amazon.com/Low-Cholestero...e=UTF8&s=books

I'm not sure about health supplements because its more about what food he eats and what he drinks, than finding a quick way to lower it.

Second everything above. Red yeast rice is another possibility, but only if he goes off the Lipitor. Red yeast rice doesn't appear to have the side effects that Lipitor has (possible liver damage).

If he takes niacin, he needs to take 1000 mg a day for it to be effective. I get the slow release niacin at Walmart in 500 mg pills. He can also take fish oil supplements, but he needs to take between 3000 and 4000 mg a day. The largest one I have found is 1200 mg a tablet. If he has any, ahem, gi symptoms from the fish oil, he can freeze them ahead of time to alleviate his symptoms. Two scoops a day of Shaklee Soy Protein has also been reported by some people to help their cholesterol.

I know this really isn't indicative, but he's 5'8" and140#. We're Portuguese and eat a mostly Meditirenian (sp?) diet. It's all basically olive oil and for steaks and all, it's promise butter and the such. He eats garlic laden foods twice a week- maybe I have to push it further. I hate to get emotional, but I REALLY don't want my dad to have a heart attack/ DIE. I'm wayyyy closer tohim than my mom even though we don't really talk.

Sometimes diet does not matter at all. Many scientists are looking into the hereditary. And it may very well be. Many people even with medication can only drop down a few numbers.

Diet can help him in many other ways if it does not do much for his cholestrol. It can help him keep weight off (which is a great factor for bad cholestrol) and so many more health benefits.

Niacin is at any drug store. It's a REAL bad cholestrol zapper for many. Also it's not a drug, it's in vitamins (not near enough to touch cholestrol however) so it's a good thing to take.

He found out his cholestrol was high by a doctor right? Tell him how you feel, you are scared, and please go back with the doctor with him and see about any other alternatives he can try naturally first.

If his numbers are just too high at this point, a good kick in the ass with a medication will brng it down. There are many on the market now. Some not a statin (attacks the liver) which is a very good pill!

Also many doctors will only keep a person on a cholestrol lowering drug for 6 months and see how the drug worked...that is not enough time to do any damage to the liver according to studies.

My roomate is now taking Niacin no Flush. He had side effects with Crestor and Lipitor. His numbers are WAY down.

    Good luck.
