Default My new HEALTHY diet!! A success story!!

I just thought I'd post a little success story, because I'd welcome the encouragement from all of you ladies, AND I hopefully want to inspire you, too!!

I've been having trouble with eating for awhile: in efforts to lose weight, I'd alternate between eating nothing for a few days and going on complete binges (and I won't even begin to get into my former drug-abuse-as-a-weight-loss-remedy habits). Well, I got kidney stones over Christmas, and it was just at a point where I was so busy and so far into my bad habits that everything came to a head and I started to really look into my diet/habits. Well, I don't know what happened, but a fire was suddenly lit under my ass (probably because I had nothing else to do during the two weeks I was practically bed-ridden) and I started REALLY looking into nutrition and my health, and started this new diet/lifestyle change. I ended up consulting a nutritionist (it was about $150 for an hour and a half), and I have to say, this is probably the best investment I have made!

In three weeks, I've lost about 18 lbs, and I'm still losing more (steadily, but in a good, healthy way!). My body looks WORLDS different: not only have I toned up a lot, but I *feel* SO much better! I have a ton of energy, and I'm happy, happy, happy, and not as stressed! I feel like I'm just glowwwinngg.

The best part? I'm NOT cutting back on what I eat AT ALL! I eat 3 meals a day, and snacks if I want (which is way more than I used to eat) but the trick is just to eat the right foods! So I figured I'd post a little abbreviated list of some things I've been doing, in case there's any interest. There are a few sacrifices, but let me tell you: they haven't been hard at all, because I use supplements to replace my former favorite foods.

-I cut out sugar out of my diet. The first two weeks were hard... I had a lot of cravings, but I've replaced these by cooking sugar-free desserts, and using Stevia, a natural sweetener, in my tea, etc. Also, Agave nectar tastes JUST like honey, and you can put it in yogurt, etc. Yummm. If you DO eat sugar, eat no more than 20g a day. No juice. Drink lots of tea and water. Also, I learned that usually when people get sugar cravings, it's because they're hungry for REAL food. I'll eat protein when I feel like chocolate, and suddenly the craving is gone. I used to not use any sweeteners before, either, but since I started using Stevia, I don't want sugar like I did before.

-I eat 3 balanced meals a day. Breakfast is my biggest meal, and I feel like I'm eating a TON, but because it's so protein-rich, it's really good, apparently.

-I eat 16 g of protein with every meal. Turkey has 20g in 4 oz, chicken has 29, salmon has 23 in 3 oz. Other good sources: tuna, almonds, soynuts, almond butter, pork and beef (it's not best for me to eat these, but it all depends on your body), eggs, cottage cheese, yogurt, protein powder, avocado, beans, soy milk. I've found that centering my meals around protein makes me MUCH LESS hungry. And I can still eat carbs! I just try to stick to whole grains, rice, quinoa (you can buy it at trader joe's- it's soo good), and spelt bread (kinda like rye? it's weird, but good). I really don't have that many carb cravings anymore, though.

-I eat a LOT of veggies. Carrots, cucumbers, snap peas, broccoli, celery, lettuce, etc etc. I swear, I was never a veggie eater before, but I'm allowed to eat them with hummus or guacamole. I try to add them into every meal, and I love them! Good snack, too.

-No drinks except tea and water. This cuts out all extra calories. If I really want something carbonated or juice-like, I'll mix about 1/4 a glass of aronia berry juice (low sugar content... tastes kind of like boysenberry?) with 3/4 sparkling berry-flavored mineral water. It's delicious! I thought giving up coffee and redbull (my addictions) would be the death of me, but it's not! I just drink green tea in the morning for caffeine, and I've found that because I have so much excess energy, I don't need any helpers. The first week, I was tired a lot, but after that, I was fine.

Ummm... that's the bulk of it, I guess. I do a LOT of extra cooking, which is a little time-consuming, but it's actually kind of been fun, like a project. Plus, the results are worth it! And there's easy, quick options, like a salad with fish or tuna on it (or chicken... whatever!), or lentil soup, or eggs, etc etc. I used to be sooo lazy about my diet, but with this LITTLE bit of effort... I feel so good!!! It's been about a month, and I haven't eaten bad sugar ONCE. I don't feel like I need it at all! I still drink occasionally (vodka or clear rum is best... no beer), and I've had things that I'm not supposed to have (for instance, I had a slice of cheese pizza the other night) from time to time (like once a week?), but the thing is: it's a lifestyle change, not a firm diet that will all be ruined if I eat one "bad" thing.

It's weird to think that by eating MORE, you can lose more weight, but eating the right foods nourish your body in the right ways. Sometimes I feel like I'm eating way too much, but who am I to argue if it's working?? I love food :-D

I'd welcome anybody's questions/suggestions/etc, and I'd be more than happy to provide you with some recipes or further ideas (I have everything from meal lists to smart snack ideas to grocery shopping lists... I'm telling you, I've gotten REALLY into it).

    Hope this can help somebody!

I need to get back to eating like that. The last six months or so I have completely fallen off the health wagon. I haven't gained anything, but I can feel a difference. And the last three weeks I haven't even done a workout. Ugh.

can you drink SlimFast? Or eat fruits (which have sugar)?

Umm... I don't know about SlimFast. I make my own protein shakes with a scoop of protein powder, soy milk, and frozen berries. I guess it's better not to eat protein bars though, just cos you're not getting the nutrients you need. Fruit is fine, it's just the bad kind of sugar that you should avoid (processed, ending in "ose").

Congratulations... but losing 6 pounds a week isn't healthy. Two pounds a week, max.

Thanks for the great tips! Did the nutritionist give you some recipes and a schedule for meals? That would be great, some order and discipline, but keep it flexible.

    Exactly 16 g, or at least 16 g?

Thanks for posting this. I hope you will post some of your meal plans.

Are you counting calories or on an exchange system, or do you just know what you can and can't eat? Do you have upper limits on how much you eat, or do you just eat until full?

I work with a dr, nutritionist, dietician and a personal trainer on my program. I have to say, having that team of knowledge behind me has made a world of difference. So many myths have been busted and I've learned so much about how my body functions and how to fuel it for optimum preformance. 50 pounds down as of today since august.

50lbs since August wow thats amazing!

I thought about getting a nutritionist too. How did you go about finding a qualified one? 18lbs in 3 weeks is awesome...probably alot of water weight too but still you have more energy too.

I'm not counting calories, but I make sure that I only eat 3 meals a day and no more than 2 snacks if necessary (but it's fine to split 3 large meals into 6 little ones). I do watch portion control though: I try to eat a LOT of veggies with every meal; about 1/2 a plate, then 1/4 carbs and 1/4 protein. If I'm still hungry, I'll wait about a half hour and see if I really want seconds (usually my food digests and I feel more full), or I'll drink some tea or soup to fill up.
As for protein, I aim for AT LEAST 16 g (it's okay to have more!) but again, I watch portion control so I try not to eat TOO much of anything.
A variety of foods is really good for you, too! So yeah, I definitely try to vary my meal plans.
As some of you requested, here are a few sample meal options of mine (again, this is what works for MY body, so it might not be best for you):

    Breakfast
    1. 2 eggs, a piece of spelt bread with Earth Balance butter (Trader Joe's), 1 turkey sausage. Green tea.
    2. Cream of buckwheat with Earth Balance butter or Maple flavoring (not actual syrup), fresh blueberries, 1 cup soy milk with 2 tsp whey protein. Green tea.
    3. Open-faced breakfast sandwich on spelt bread: roasted turkey, romaine lettuce, sliced cucumbers, soyanaise. Herbal tea.
    4. Wheat-free, dairy-free waffles (Trader Joes), with almond butter and maple flavoring. Turkey sausage.
    5. Smoothie: 1 cup soy milk with 1 scoop whey protein powder and some frozen raspberries or blueberries.
    6. Tofu scrambled with zucchini, red onion, and bell pepper. Spelt toast with Earth Balance butter. Hot tea.

    Lunch/Dinner:
    1. Sandwich on spelt bread: roasted turkey, romaine lettuce, sliced cucumbers, soyanaise. Herbal tea.
    2. Sushi/sashimi with miso soup.
    3. Cooked quinoa (kinda like rice) mixed with boiled lentils, with chicken broth in it. Cut up turkey sausage stirred in.
    4. Stir fry: tofu, carrots, celery, those crunchy lil white things (someone help me! i forget what theyre called lol), broccoli. Prepared with coconut oil, then stirred in with chicken broth and Braggs (it tastes just like soy sauce but it's better).
    5. Salad with spinach, lots and lots of veggies, chick peas, whatever, and tuna on top. For dressing: olive oil, lemon, and pepper.
    6. Blackened fish (salmon, cod, catfish...) with quinoa and veggies.
    7. Fish cooked in the oven with carrots, peppers, zucchinis, ginger, lime, and chicken broth all wrapped up in parchment paper.
    8. Grilled chicken with rice and veggies.

    Good snack/small meal options:
    1. Soup!
    2. hard boiled egg
    3. apple or pear slices wtih cheese or nut butter
    4. hummus with raw veggies
    5. sprouted grain bagel with cream cheese (I'm avoiding dairy as much as possible, but it's fine for some)
    6. brown rice and bean burrito with avocado and fresh salsa
    7. fresh garden salad wth lots of veggies, tofu or lean meats, beans, and lemon/oil dressing.

These ideas are sort of just outlines: apply the basic principles of a balanced diet (while avoiding sugar) and it's really easy to get creative. All of these things are really easy to make and don't take that long, so it's perfect for busy people as long as you're willing to put a little bit more effort into it. I have a lot of much more detailed recipes of everything from entrees to desserts if anyone wants me to email them, but quite frankly, theyre pretty intricate and I certainly don't have the time to cook like that all the time! These things I just listed work out really well, and I've been doing great so far!!
    I hope this helps everyone!!!

Sure, I would love your recipes. I cook for my family almost every night. I want my gusy to be healthy, but no way are they going to eat Lentil or Miso soup!
