Umm usually when an adult gets the chicken pox they need to be put in the hospital... or so I was told anyway because its much more harmful for adults then children. You need to be super super careful with this.. it can turn into shingles.. I would almost go to the ER just to be safe..

Chicken Pox tends to be more severe the older you are but I wouldn't say you should assume there needs to be hospitalization. Use common sense.

Shingles is a secondary infection of the Chicken Pox virus. It can happen to anyone who's had Chicken Pox; flare ups occur in adulthood. The virus gets into the nerve sheaths where it lays dormant. When the virus becomes active again...

    Bam! Shingles.

Try treating it the same as your daughter. Antihistamines and oatmeal baths. Advil for fever and any discomfort.

Umm.... here's some info on adult infection I culled from various resources...

Symptoms are usually more severe in adults than in children. A few uncomfortable days can be expected. Like other virus infections there is usually a fever (high temperature). There may be a dry cough, sore throat, feeling sick, headache and general aches and pains. These symptoms often start a day or so before the rash appears. Spots then appear in crops. The spots develop into small blisters and are itchy. The spots can be anywhere on the body and sometimes also in the mouth. Several crops may develop over several days. The blisters gradually dry up and scab. They slowly fade over a week or so but may take 2-3 weeks to go completely.

    Treatments

·Have plenty to drink to avoid dehydration.
·Paracetamol or aspirin taken regularly will help with fever, headaches, aches and pains.
·Gargling with soluble aspirin is useful to relieve a sore throat.
·Calamine lotion or cream applied to the spots may ease itching.
·Antihistamine tablets or medicine may be advised at bedtime to help with sleep if itch is a problem. These are available from pharmacies or on prescription.

Seek medical advice urgently if there is breathlessness, confusion or if there are any unusual or severe symptoms.

After a person recovers from chickenpox, the virus stays in the body. Usually the virus does not cause any problems; however, the virus can reappear years later, causing shingles.

Anyone who has recovered from chickenpox may develop shingles, including children. However, shingles most commonly occurs in people 50 years old and older.

Most commonly, a person has only one episode of shingles in his/her lifetime. Although rare, a second or even third case of shingles can occur.

Chances are your fine... hopefully my post didnt come out as omg your going to die go to the hospital.. I didnt mean it like that at all. Im not a doctor lol... and anything im saying is just what i've heard.

    Some reading for you..

You picture really isn't that bad, it's about how my daughter looked.

Info on more severe chicken pox issues:
Lung infection occurs in about 1 out of 400 people, especially adolescents and adults, resulting in cough and difficulty breathing. Brain infection (encephalitis) is less common and produces unsteadiness in walking, headache, dizziness, confusion, and seizures. Heart infection sometimes causes a heart murmur. Joint inflammation produces joint pain.

Antiviral drugs are more commonly used with adults but have to be given within 24 hours of onset of disease to be effective.

I'd just use common sense. If you really think you're developing a more severe complication than go to the emergency room.

Yeah, you should see another doctor. Adult chicken pox is very serious.

Everything Sirona has mentioned is correct. It's highly unlikely that any doctor would admit you to the hospital for chicken pox if you are not having neurologic and respiratory problems. Encephalitis and pneumonitis are serious complications. Fortunately, chicken pox most commonly causes only itching, rash and general miserableness. Best wishes for a speedy recovery and try not to scratch. If your throat is really sore, you can mix equal parts of benadryl and maalox. Gargle 3 tablespoons and swallow. It should help ease your throat pain.

Stock up on Protein drinks (Ensure and the like). It will help you get your daily rec's without having to swallow food.

I know people think that pox are horrible for adults, however, its just an INCREASE in the chance that an adult can suffer from more severe complications than children...but that doesn't mean that they will.

Keep an eye on yourself. If you get ANY inkling that you should go to the ER, do so. There really isn't anything that your doctor can do, but he COULD be sympathetic and educate you on what you should look for, etc.

Good luck and take it easy. Update us when you can, as well.

aw man i just wanted to say im sorry you got stuck with it!!! and if it helps, the pic isnt as bad as you think... most of my friends and i have a lot of hormonal imbalances so it only looks to me like you had a bad breakout... it will be gone soon, just remember not to itch, lol...

cool compresses might help, like ice packs, not wet cool cuz then you might cause dryness... and if you start having trouble breathing or anything looks infected, thats when i'd say you'd need to get to an ER (considering the doc has no concern, lol)

It should. It's good for mosquito bites used as a paste so i'd guess it could work here too!

I had chicken pox in my 20's. I had no fever just the bumps and itch. I did not need a doctor. It ran it's course as a child would with pox.

Now we all run the risk (as this is a virus that never leaves the body) of getting shingles...my old roomate had shingles...Holy shit, red patches that put him in major pain...yea then you need a doctor. But his passed in a few days. It can flare up at any time. Or you may never get shingles.

You look like you're healing up well!
Try gargling with sea salt to help your throat heal.

I've NEVER had chicken pox, and this makes me really scared.

There were 30 kids in my kindergarten class, and 29 got chicken pox. I had the vaccine in high school, but I am still SO scared of getting it.
