    Default Math...

Pooka's doing math homework for the first time...in her life....

She's not very good at math...

And wishes Paige or another incredible math were online.

Pooka's also craving a double cheeseburger from McDonalds...or even a kids meal.

    Damn commercials during Family Guy.

Shes also wondering what the difference is between a parenthesis and a bracket?

Brackets go outside of parentheses, for purposes of organization.

((x-y) - (z-y)) would be confusing, so you would have [(x-y) - (z-y)]. You resolve everything in the parentheses first, and then everything in the brackets. I can't believe I remember this, LOL!

Usually. I think the main reason both are used is to avoid confusion.

    So you could write: (a+(b-c))/d,

    or your could write [a+(b-c)]/d.

The second one is easier to read.

Hardkandee, I like math but not the homework!

    Please - Parenthses
    Excuse - Exponents
    My - Multiplication
    Dear - Division
    Aunt - Addition
    Sally - Subtraction

I think aunt sally was a bit of a drunk if I remember the story right.

You almost have the order right. Multiplication and division are done together, from left to right. The same for addition and subtraction. For example:
3-1+7-4 is done as 3-1=2 2+7=9 9-4=3. Doing the addition in the middle first would result in -9.

Yup. ^ Because multiplication and division are the same processes as are adding and substracting. Dividing by four is the same as multiplying by one quarter.

It's frightening how much of this is actually coming back to me as I read it.....esp since i sucked at all math outside of statistics.

Math just never made sense to me..."solve for x"...why?? ok so x = 3....3 WHAT?? toyotas? kumkwats? whay are we doing this work??

That why stat made sense...we werent solving for some random number...we were figuring out real word problems.....
People always ask me, did I ever learn anything when I was a stripper? Yeah, I did. One man plus two beers equals 20 dollars.
