If you eat more calories than you burn, you will gain weight. If you burn more calories than you eat, then you will lose weight. It's that simple. Eat reasonable portions, stop eating when you're no longer hungry, and exercise.

try to avoid foods that don't work for you (candy, cookies, sodas) Eat lower calorie, smaller portions, and as many whole foods (things that grow, that you eat raw) as you can.

Also, working out is great! I don't know if you do, but when you join a gym they usually have spacials where you can get a trainer to teach you what to use and how. Cardio is great for losing weight

Eat slower and only eat until you feel full. Stop eating, no matter how good it is. Drink lots of water, at least 64oz/day. Try snacking on fruits, vegetables. Peanut butter &celery sticks, carrots in fat-free ranch are examples. Trty to eat smaller protions but more frequently throughout the day. Stay away from salty foods as they make you retain water. Alway eat balanced........look on the bread bag for a food guide pyramid and try to eat accordingly. I hope this points you in the right direction.

No, calories are units of energy. All food has calories, some more than others, and your body burns calories to maintain itself. It's sort of like the gas in your car. You burn over a thousand calories a day just existing; the trick is to burn more than you consume. Junky, sugary foods have lots of calories (and not many nutrients); veggies, lean meats, and fruits have fewer calories and lots of useful nutrients. So just don't eat junk food, don't overeat, and exercise, and you will lose weight and be healthy!

1 pound of fat is 3.500 calories. So in order to lose 1lb a week, you need to burn off 3,500 calories a week. So you need to burn off 500 calories a day. There is 3 ways to do this. Eat 500 calories less per day, work out to burn 500 a day, or the easiest way is split it. Eat 250 less calories a day, and then work off 250 calories a day. This is easy. You can eliminate 250 calories a day by giving up 2 cans of soda, or skipping a Big mac, not eatign a second helping at dinner. You can burn off 250 calories working out pretty easy to. That would be like jogging for a half hour. Or try jogging for 20 minutes, and lifting weights.

Carbs are converted in your body to sugar, and you use that pretty fast, so when you eat carbs, you don't stay full for long. Its better to eat more protien, less carbs, because protien keeps you feeling full longer. Fiber also helps keeping you feel full longer, so try eating more fiber and protien, and less carbs. Carbs are generally starchy stuff, like bread, and pasta. Of course, veggies and fruit are good for you and you should eat more of that.

Even not knowing much about nutrition, you still know what's good for you and whats bad. You know the bag of Cheetos isnt good for you. You know whats junk food, so you should try to avoid it. You know veggies are good for you, so you should try to eat more of them.

What everybody else said is great. Another easy way to start figuring it out is to look at the nutrition label of everything you buy at the store. You start figuring out what is reasonable and what isn't. Like...520 mg of sodium (salt) in regular spaghetti sauce vs. 890 in Spaghettios' (so embarrassed, both are in my cabinets). Also, try to avoid things that have high fructose corn syrup as one of the first few ingredients. That stuffs just nasty! (Tasty, though).
