    Thumbs down Monosodium Glutimate

    MSG sucks.

I had some really tasty Chinese delivery, and it was so good! But now I'm a fucking zombie. My whole face is slack and I can't pay attention to anything, and I just want to go take a nap.

I thought no one was using this shit anymore, dammit!

Nasty. I had a roomate in college who was Asian..she used to buy MSG(you can get it in a lot of supermarkets) and would add it to her cooking

Most chain style restaurants have it in their food. Applebee's, Chili's, Friday's, Texas Roadhouse, and all of the fast food places too, Wendy's, Taco Bell, KFC...

It isn't just Chinese. If you do have an allergy to it, please ask WHENEVER and WHEREVER you go out to eat!

MSG is naturally occuring in most food (those high in protein usually). As for Chinese restaurants.....if you ask, they'll cook without it.

I think it's found mainly in seaweed, shrooms and tomatoes. You'd be amazed by how many common prepared foods (canned soups etc) that it's in.

Yeah, when I worked for a catering and event planning company, people would always ask about cooking without MSG. I'd always have to explain that we don't add it, but I'd have to list the foods that it's in. I know chicken was a big thing on that list, which is what made me think it was foods high in protein.

MSG occurs naturally when proteins break down and mix with certain sodium molecules (I believe?). Especially with things like tomatoes and seaweed.

The seaweed is originally how it was "discovered" as a food-flavor enhancer in Japan.

I ate a bunch of eggrolls (at last 4 of them) my friend cooked that were loaded with it and I felt all cracked out and weird and my heart was racing.

However, I do use that stuff called "Season Complete" or something like that which has MSG in it. Just can't use too much.

    Not handled by hands?

That would be pretty hard to do. Anyway, I assure you I used to keep very strict kosher and I handled my food just like everybody else. And MSG can be kosher, just like any other seasoning. It's great that you found a kosher restaurant that doesn't use MSG, but that's not because MSG isn't kosher.

I have no idea where you got your idea of what Kosher food is.

    1. Certain animals may not be eaten at all (Birds of prey, Non-fish seafood, mammals that don't chew thier cud and have cloven feet). This restriction includes the flesh, organs, eggs and milk of the forbidden animals.
    2. Of the animals that may be eaten, the birds and mammals must be killed in accordance with Jewish law (slaughtered by a Shochet using a special method of slaughter, shechita).
    3. All blood must be drained from the meat or broiled out of it before it is eaten.
    4. Certain parts of permitted animals may not be eaten.
    5. Meat (the flesh of birds and mammals) cannot be eaten with dairy Fish, eggs, fruits, vegetables and grains can be eaten with either meat or dairy. (According to some views, fish may not be eaten with meat).
    6. Utensils that have come into contact with meat may not be used with dairy, and vice versa. Utensils that have come into contact with non-kosher food may not be used with kosher food. This applies only where the contact occurred while the food was hot.
    7. Grape products made by non-Jews may not be eaten.

Maybe I'm spacing here, but what is considered non fish seafood and what kind of meats can they eat then? These guidelines make it sound like they eliminate alot of foods from the diet. Kudos to you ladies who do it. Sounds hard I can barely do the fridays during lent

By "non-fish seafood," she means shellfish and some other kinds of fish that are prohibited. A fish has to have both fins AND scales, so we can't have catfish, shrimp, crab, lobster, swordfish, shark, etc. Other meats we can eat include chicken, turkey, and most other poultry (just not birds of prey); we can also have beef, lamb, and goat. I don't know anyone who actually eats goat, but they do in Africa and the Middle East, and I love some goat cheeses. Any mammal that has a split hoof AND chews the cud is okay - so pork is not. We also don't mix meat and dairy, so no cheeseburgers and no buttery chicken. For some reason, fish isn't considered meat, so fish in butter is okay.

I only miss shellfish, and I have to admit that once or twice a year, I sneak and have some shrimp. But at least I feel very guilty about it afterward, so hopefully G-d will forgive me.

Oh, and this is funny - technically giraffe would be kosher, if anyone could climb up high enough to properly slaughter it!

MSG... monosodium glutamate... the DEATH of me!! It is what gives me severe migraines... i can't eat ANYTHING without knowing exactly whats in it because MSG is in EVERYTHING! i can only eat from certain chinese places... i cant eat any chips that are like sour cream and onion or anything... canned soups except cream of celery and cheddar cheese soup, lol... i have to buy special chicken broth to make my own soup... i have a really time eating at family parties, and people look at me like im crazy cuz i have to read the label before eating it... i tell them all that im horribly allergic to msg, and that way they dont question it, lol... one night i was bingeing and ate half a bag of cheetos, BAM migraine an hour later... msg is evil!! (and by the way, when you get like i am, you can SMELL msg and TASTE it... its disgusting!)
