    Default Pickton

    http://www.cbc.ca/news/background/pickton/

Anyone following this? I know the US media has rather inexplicably ignored this whole thing, but it's kind of a big deal...a serial killer who has been charged with killing 26 women, and has allegedly admitted to killing 49.

Remains were found on his property (pig farm) in various disgusting states, including chopped up in the freezer, and in the pig's food trough. (I'm SO glad I don't eat pork...he was a local distributor )

I was working at a club next to the court where the trial is being held this week, and it's weird just how low-key it all is. I should be proud, I guess, that we're a country that doesn't sensationalize things so much, but at the same time, it almost seems...I dunno, disrespectful...that it's going by almost unnoticed.

All the girls he killed were prostitutes, and it just seems like, because of that, no one cares.

This stuff is so creepy... Of course, he lives on a pig farm- just like Snatch.
And the part about the calf he used to sleep with... until it was slaughtered... do you think that has anything to do with his killing fetish? Yuck.

I read about this in Jane Magazine when people were trying to drum up interest in the missing women. This case is similar to the Green River Killer of the Pacific Northwest (U.S.) in that his victims were transients & streetwalkers so there was a lack of urgency to stop him, to say the least.

As for Canada's method of dealing with murder trials...IMO the origins of Canada (British Commonwealth country) discourage citizens from making a circus of a tragedy. American culture is tackier in that respect...& opportunistic. (Media circuses= much money.)

I haven't heard about it, probably for the reason you mentioned - nobody gives a shit when prostitutes are murdered. I wrote a paper in college on this issue and found a quote from the Chief of Police when some serial killer was doing his thing; I think it was the Green River Killer. The police chief said, "Many of the victims were prostitutes, but the saddest thing about this case is that many were not." IOW, the hookers deserved it but it's a tragedy for those poor girls who weren't hookers!

I didn't want to add this but it is mentioned in Lily Burana's "Strip City": police were using the acronym "N.H.I.-No Humans Involved" to refer to sex workers killed in a prominent series of murders in the Pacific Northwest (most probably the Green River Killer case but she didn't specify.) Miss Burana was horrifed when she saw this on TV (that police would actually assign an acronym to designate sex workers as "non human")...
Let's be realistic, people. I am often called paranoid but you haven't lived where I have lived & seen what I have seen. Predators are opportunistic and sex workers are easy targets. They don't care if you're little Co-Ed Stripper working her way through college or a strung-out junkie. It's all the same to them....& they know a sex worker's credibility is affected by her occupation.

    Holy shit @ NHI! Really??

Yes, this is an issue that should resonate with all strippers...though we're different from hookers, in the eyes of many, it's just semantics. We're vulnerable to many of the same dangers, including woman-hating serial killers.
