Default Please save me from stripping!!!

So last night at work this nicely dressed hispanic man approaches me and asks, "Do you really like doing this?" He was talking about my stripping. He tells me he's been watching me all night and he can tell that I'm the kind of girl who should not be there. So he then tells me, "I can get you a job at a very nice hotel I work at downtown where you can be making up to $10 an hour just answering the phone". I then tell him that by stripping I make around $5000 a week (highly exaggerated of course!! lol ), and that I cannot live off of $10 an hour. He starts out saying that he hates to see a hispanic woman stripping and I need think about how I make "my people" look. I HATE THAT SHIT. I had a similar situation about 4 years ago where the guy actually made me cry. What the hell does race have to do with stripping? One of the black dancers was telling me in the dressing room about how some black man told her the same kind of shit. That she was just enforcing the stereotypes of black people, etc. Do these men come into the club looking for a girl of their race to counsel and SAVE them?!!!!!!

Anyways....the guy last night gives me his card and tells me that when I'm ready to give up the "lifestlye" to give him a call. FUCKER

Yeah...I run into guys like that occasionally that swear I'm better than this and that I'm too smart to be working in a bar. I just remind myself (and sometimes them) that I am as smart as they say I am....and that's WHY I'm stripping to get through college rather than living paycheck to paycheck and thousands of dollars in debt. It really is irritating for someone to assume they know you....especially when they try to connect it to race. In situations like these I do one of two things...I either make it very clear to them that I'm comfortable with what I do and why I do it and I don't give a damn how my job makes me seem to other people. Or if I'm feeling especially cocky...I play on their supposed sympathy and make them feel like I really do need to be saved (some guys like this I guess). On occasion if the situation is right the guy ends up spending money feeling as though he's made a difference in helping me get out of this lifestyle! LOL!

I wouldn't worry about it though...you are in this job for your own reasons and his opinion is the last one you should worry about.... hope this helps...

I'm new to the forum and have been lurking a few days. HELLO!

Funlatina, when I read your comment - first thing i though was: If you're supposedly making latinas look bad, what is HE doing as a patron o a strip joint? Isn't he doing a "disservice" to the race as well?

    Whatever.

I'm a black woman and I hate when people make me feel like I'm responsible for my entire race.

Old white guys give me the same line...since they can't figure out what race I am...They really mean "I want a dumb little brown woman to cook my meals & wash my clothes & f*ck me for free."

Hell, use these guys as Hustle Practice & see if you can "sell" them on your change of heart from dancing...& get them to give you a few hundred dollars as a rent advance since you have to move out of your pimp's apartment now that you won't dance...LOL

Don't worry about it. I've only been doing this for four months ish and I've heard it over 20 times. "You look so sweet and innocent and you're so smart, I'm sure you could easily get another job" Duh...I'm not doin this because I couldn't get another job, I LIKE this one. And since when is being smart or a good person a reason not to strip? Almost every woman on this forum is a counter to that mindset. They just don't understand. In the words of a chubby south park character, it's our hot body...we'll do what we want.

Duuuuude!!! *I* was the type of girl who had guys talk to her like that CONSTANTLY when I was dancing! OK the guys didn't tell me anything related to race, but they definitely would approach me and say "You shouldn't be doing this," or "You're better than this," or "What are you doing dancing here, when you're so smart and in possession of a mathematics degree?"(they'd say that after asking me what else I did, or if I went to school) I think a lot of guys said that to me because I would talk very intelligently(more intelligent than they stereotyped strippers to be), and because I'd told them about how I went to college for math. But I also think a lot of guys told me that stuff because I had a very innocent girl-next-door demeanor. I guess the girl-next-door thing is the closest it gets to being profiled because of race(as in, both race and innocent looks are simply traits of physical appearance). Or maybe it was because I didn't come off as a "typical stripper," I was more down-to-earth than most.

As far as the $10/hr job thing goes? Girl, I had the EXACT SAME THING happen around this time last year LOL! I was at my friend S--n's apartment, chilling with him, his roommate, and this douchebag friend of theirs that I hadn't met before. The friend started trying to talk me out of dancing. He claimed that I might have a chance to get a $10/hr receptionist job at an Auto Zone type place!! Ooooh $10/hr! Meanwhile, my rent was $860/mo and my car insurance+payments+gas exceeded $700/mo. My friend S--n tried to defend me and say that I made a lot more money than $10/hr, but making more money isn't the point...the point IS, that I couldn't live on $10/hr even if I'd wanted to. The douchebag friend of S--n's made it sound like dancing was so wretched and evil. And besides, I liked dancing back then but it wasn't exactly what I wanted to be doing...I mostly did it because I needed money until I got a job in my field(I had my college degree back then, so needing education wasn't an issue). But still, it was really fucking annoying. And kinda angers me to this day, now that I look back and think about it.

Hahaha this post reminds me of something funny yet pathetic. After reading this post, I've realized that apparently a LOT of dancers have had customers tell them "you're too pretty for this," "you're too good to strip," etc. It's nothing special(although sometimes it happens to some more than others, esp girls who might flaunt their education or how they're looking for another job, like *ahem* I was at times when I danced and was in a bad mood). Well, that reminds me of this stupid girl I used to be friends with. I used to dance with her. I wrote about her a few times before, such as in the "stupidest stripper" thread. This girl wanted to be a model, and would go around on her bad nights saying to the other dancers, "But it doesn't matter if I didn't make any money stripping tonight...Because I'm gonna be a moddddeellllll!" and she would sing out the word 'model'.

Anyway, my friend and I were discussing this girl the other night. We were wondering why this girl went around saying that she was going to hit it big as a model/porn star/soap opera actress/etc, when she wasn't even that great. We wondered how someone with such low self-esteem(evidence of her low self-esteem include: her fear of driving OR taking mass transit, clinging to possessive boyfriends that take her money, her gullible nature, etc), could think so highly of herself. Then my friend came up with a theory: Perhaps customers told her the same lines that they told a lot of girls, such as saying "you're too pretty to be stripping!" and she actually BELIEVED them!! Perhaps she actually thought that she was the only girl that the guys were saying "you're the prettiest girl in the club!" Maybe she really believed the customers' generic bullshit. LOL. Just kinda funny. This thread just further verifies for me the fact that customers say those lines to a LOT of girls, so it is nothing special.

Yeah, I get it all the time.....it's just that when they make it a racial thing is when it really gets to me. Like I said, one time this guy made me cry. He was offering to put me thru school "with no strings attached" and saying that I made my race look bad by being there. He went on and on and on until I got up and went to the dressing room crying. The manager kicked him out.

RE: stripper haters....I get sick and tired of hearing people talk out of their asses to me about Life. If they really truly "care" about me, they should financially support me 100% until I find a way to support myself otherwise- "put your money where your mouth is.." Until then, they can take a long walk off a short pier.

    Yes. Very well put.

I also mention that I am an actress working as a stripper between gigs (which is true) and that stripping is good practice for me as an actress and entertainer. Which it is.

I used to think I got that crap because I was so young, but I still get it and I'm 32. I just explain to them that it's my choice, that I'm not doing it because I "have" to, but because I choose to. If someone still wants to carry on with that bs then I'll leave them to it. I'm not going to let some stranger tell me how to live my life.

The last guy that tried to "counsel" me.... Blech, be gone!

"Hey, you see that lost and lonely looking girl in the corner there, biting her nails and scared to death? Go counsel HER. This sexy grown woman who is having a good time is off to make some money, and hopefully the next guy wont be as dry as you."

    HAhahaahahahahaaaaaaaa!

$10 an hour. Seriously, how did he think you'd react?

"Well, here I make hundreds/thousands a week, set my own schedule, come and go as I please, but I've been dreaming of the day I could wake up early, dress up in uncomfortable clothes, site all day doing repetitive, dehumanizing work and serve my boss, doing everything he says. Only then will I have respect for myself!"

My first thought as a comeback is to say someting along the lines of "I have rich white men paying me just for the privelidge of looking at my beautiful brown skin. How is that insulting to my race?"

Turn it around on the insulting custy that you are the one who is actually taking the rich white man for a ride, not the other way around. (I look at my job this way, anyhow. When I first started I thought "I'm getting paid how much for this?... Sweet!")

Naysayers are a dime a dozen no matter what profession you're in. Stay focused and dismiss those crazy comments like you would anything else. I have to kick myself at times when I have let stuff like that throw me off my game. Yes, it's apart of the territory, but I don't have to stay and listen to it and neither do you.

Damn. Those $10 an hour jobs out there are the REASON I started stripping. I was working three jobs like that at once, and said f--- this. I was doing all that to pay my bills and NOT get ahead in savings. Stupid-ass customers need to do the math before they start saying shit like that. What they're really doing is using numbers to mask a moral judgement they're making.

Personally, I thought I was worth WAY more than the 8.74 an hour I was making at one of my jobs, and that's WHY i started dancing.

^^^^I know!!! I keep thinking of someone just handing me a $10 bill after having worked an entire hour. I can't imagine going back to an hourly wage like that.
Doesn't this thread kinda make u think of the Harmony Dust bitch from the Glamour article? LOL. If they're gonna come in to "counsel" us....why not bring in some lip gloss for us like Harmony does??!!! lol

I hate the guys that come in and try and "save you". "You can do so much better than this." "What do you need to quit this? I'll give you 10,000 a month" "You're not the type of girl who needs to be in a place like this". I posted before about the cab driver I got who told me I was "a whore and a prostitute" "You're too pretty for this" it goes on and on. That comment is almost as annoying as the "what's your real name?" "will you marry me (cute sometimes)" or lately I've gotten a lot of dumb comments- "you're gorgeous but- i don't like your piercing on your face" (my monroe) I don't care what you like or not. It's what I like- yeah i'm not going to run around not giving a crap what customers think of me but there are a couple things that I keep as mine. Anyone else deal with that? You not liking it isn't going to make me run to the bathroom and yank it out- You're not that special. There is mostlikely another guy in the club at that very second who loves it.
