    Default SUV/hybrid suggestions??

We'll prob be in the market for an extra vehicle come the end of '07. I would really like an suv at this point, w/ 2 kids and more to come in the future I think it's not a bad idea. Can someone suggest some slightly less gas guzzling, decently priced ( we'll be buying used), roomy, kinda snazzy suv or hybrid??? I realize I may be asking for too much!!!

    Check out this listing.

It appears, according to this site, that the Ford Escape is at the top of the SUV hybrid heap.

    jay, you forgot the link!

    I'm guessing it's this one?

    http://www.edmunds.com/reviews/list/...3/article.html

I like the Toyota Highlander, but I love me a Japanese car over a domestic.

Although it's not on here (wasn't available this year), there is a diesel version of the VW Toureg.

Sure is a nice family car! I'll just put the kids in the trunk JK before anyone calls DSS. I'm actually pretty impressed w/ the highlander. It meets alot of our requirements. We prefer foreign over here too. Hubby likes Nissans but I don't think their suv's get very good mileage.
    Thanks for the link, Jay!

Depending on how "used" you go...not many options.

I think the VW Toureg gets better gas mileage than most, followed by the Highlander.

I think its smart of you to stay away from American cars...unfortunately. The Ford Escape is not roomy enough for an expanding family (test drove one...pretty small...it's like a car on stilts).

agreed on VW Tuareg mileage. As a matter of marketing, the intent of hybrid SUV's has little or nothing to do with improving gas mileage ... instead it's a way to add the hybrid's electric motor to boost performance / max horsepower without resorting to a turbocharger. (plus a $4-6000 subsidy financed by other taxpayers to help pay for the the boosted performance).

Finally, a car question! I am a total autofreak so here we go. The hybrid tech. as Melonie pointed out, does not do much in the way of gas mileage. Actually, the Prius gets worse mileage on the highway than a 4-cylinder civic because it needs the brakes to be activated to use the electric motor. At any rate, if you are looking for something sporty, with all-terrain capability and will save some pennies at the pump, I would suggest a Subaru. The Subaru's boxer engine is very fuel efficient and reliable because of it's design it reduces friction inside the engine and will last longer than most. All Subaru's come with all-wheel-drive and are more capable of handling snow, rain and other elements better than most 4x4 trucks and heavy SUVs. Plus, they make a few wagons and SUVs that will provide the extra room you're looking for. Happy hunting but I would start at the Subaru dealer/website. Just my 2 cents.

Ooooh...the Subaru!! We have a Subaru and we love it!! We own a Forester and were going to get the Tribeca (*sigh*) but decided on the Honda Odyssey Minivan.

    I love Subaru. And Honda.

I actually own two Subarus now ... an 04 WRX (no not the STI mine is only 227hp) , and an 05 non-turbo Legacy (which actually gets 32-33 mpg on interstate road trips). Either is capable of plowing snow with the front bumper, and both have been 100% trouble-free !!!

Other than looking like a Subaru, the 6 cylinder boxer engined Tribeca is one of the best designed 'real' SUV's available/

I'm still interested in a Tesla 100% electric roadster ... but primarily to cash in on both the NY state electric vehicle tax credit as well as the 'collector's item' appreciation over time a la buying a Corvette in 1953 and driving it 500 miles per year !

I'm lusting for an Escalade hybrid. That way I could be green and pimp at the same time I'm on a 2 year lease cycle and my non-hybrid '07 Esc is due in the week after next. Maybe by the next go round Cadillac will have a hybrid offering.

To the OP, good suggestions were made by the posters. The Lexus RX hybrid might be one to consider if you can afford it. I dont buy foreign vehicles but I were to, Lexus would be at the top of my list. And don't forget GM offers several V8 powered SUV's with displacement on demand. Mileage is up significantly from the previous non DOD versions (depending on your driving habits of course). A good choice if you need a full sized SUV and want to spend less at the pump.

^^^ Don't get me started on Escalades, you My dream come true! *Must think of family first*.

Anyways, I was actually suprised nobody had brought up the subarus yet. I'ma def look into those too. Although, I hear it's like a cult. Once you buy a subaru, that's all you ever want to own Hubby's always talking them up. I'm the one who used to squash his idea b/c I don't find them sexy. I think I may have to get over it, lol.

PS- watch in a couple of months I come back and start a thread " I bought an Escalade today!" Please nooo! Must be strong

Not true ... I'm waiting with baited breath for the introduction of the redesigned Audi TT Quattro, and/or the reintroduction of a 4 wheel drive Mitsubishi Eclipse. I still own one of the originals (in Eagle Talon garb), but it's now nearly 10 years old with 150k+ miles on it so I don't trust it past local shopping trips in rotten weather (when the odds are high that some idiot driver in a full sized SUV is likely to smash into me).

It's the 4 wheel drive capability in a fun to drive, economical to operate, small car that is the selling point, not necessarily with a Subaru nameplate attached. However, in fairness, Subaru has been excellent in terms of practical auto designs, quality control, and vehicle reliability ... especially relative to the price.

Actually, it's not just the Subarus that draw a cult following. ANY of the All-wheel drives (specially in bad weather) is the turn on. Once you drive all-wheel, you'll never want to drive anything else.

When we had that heavy snowfall in December, we had to go somewhere and the backroads weren't plowed. There were people in cars and trucks stuck or off the road, and we were in our Subaru Forester just plodding along. When one tire starts to slip the other pick up the slack. It's awesome.

Of course, once you buy foreign, you may never buy American again. Unfortunately, the foreign cars are so much above the American cars in terms of luxury and mechanical dependability, there's no contest.

in fairness, this isn't true across the board. Lately, european cars have been LESS dependable than American cars. It's primarily the Japanese who are obsessed with manufacturing QC thus maximum dependability. Even in the 4 wheel drive field, Audi's reliability for current models SUCKS - which was my primary motivation to buy a Subaru even though I liked the Audi TT's basic design much better ! Hopefully the redesigned 2008 model TT will improve in this area.

Also, arguably, the real American 'luxury' and real American 'performance' cars stand up pretty well against world competition. Cadillac has really hit some home runs with the Escalade and the SLR for example. Ford has hit some home runs too with the Lincoln Town Car and the GT for example. It's typically in the under $25k market where the American carmakers' high fixed cost structures force them to 'cheap out' on designs, quality etc. But by all indications, the American carmakers have now all entered into corporate policy decisions to simply give up on trying to produce cars for the under $25k market in America any more, so that in a very few years we'll start seeing better bang for the buck on low priced Chinese / Asian imports with American carmaker logos stuck on them.

compared to repairs on a Porsche Cayenne they're a downright bargain ! Everything is relative.

I get 15 mpg in town and 18 on road trips. The '07's supposedly get a bit better due to the 6 speed transmission.

The warranty is as good or better than other luxury vehicle manufacturers. The first 50,000 is bumper to bumper other than routine maintenance. Routine maintenance costs are the same as, say, I pay for my wife's Chevy truck. I trade every two years so I haven't kept a vehicle long enough to get into non warranty repairs.

Any car worth buying is going to cost a bit to fix. But, in the positive...you usually have fewer problems with those cars than you do with the cheap cars.

You spend more at one time to fix them. With the cheaper cars, you can spend less money each fix, but more often. In the end, it probably ends about the same.

Although I have to say that our German Import VW Passat was still running strong at 150,000 miles on it. The body just wasn't all that anymore...and it did have a problem that wasn't worth US fixing...so we traded it in. heh

What year Escalade do you own? Mine is an '05 and Im looking forward to taking delivery of my '07. If you think its a Tahoe sounds like you had a bad buyers experience. Sorry about that. You should write to GM and complain.

If you ever wanted to buy a Porsche Cayenne (or any other Porsche for that matter), it would appear that the price will only be going up in the future ...

(snip)"German carmakers don't want Europe's efforts to come at their expense.

    `Jobs Will Migrate'

Wiedeking, DaimlerChrysler's Dieter Zetsche and Bayerische Motoren Werke AG CEO Norbert Reithofer, along with the heads of the local units of General Motors Corp. and Ford Motor Co., signed a Jan. 26 letter to the commission saying the new rules would be ``technically infeasible.''

``Auto exports will suffer, imports will increase, the sale of upper- and mid-range vehicles will fall dramatically and jobs will migrate from the EU,'' they wrote, citing the commission's own study of the regulation.

About 15 million cars are sold annually in the EU, where about 2 million people are employed making vehicles and their parts. That represents 7 percent of all EU manufacturing jobs.

Porsche boasts the car industry's highest profit margin, with operating profit representing 29 percent of sales in fiscal 2006. That compares with 4 percent at Fiat and Renault's estimate of 2.5 percent.

    Cayenne SUV

``If legislation makes it very expensive for German cars to reach emissions limits, it could make them less attractive compared with smaller French and Italian cars,'' said Peter Braendle, a fund manager at Swisscanto Asset Management in Zurich, which manages $44 billion including DaimlerChrysler and Peugeot shares. ``That could shift investment decisions.''

Porsche shares rose 59 percent last year to 964.06 euros, compared with a 32 percent gain for Renault, 9 percent for DaimlerChrysler, 8 percent for BMW and 3 percent for PSA Peugeot Citroen.

Wiedeking told Porsche shareholders that sports cars and sport utility vehicles such as Porsche's should be exempt from any new rules or subject to different regulations based on horsepower or fuel efficiency.

Porsche's most powerful vehicle, the Cayenne Turbo S SUV, seats five and generates 520 horsepower, more than twice as much as some 18-ton delivery trucks. With a price tag that starts at $111,600, it also produces 378 grams of CO2 a kilometer.

``Why does an SUV need 500 horsepower?'' Wiedeking said, reading a question from a shareholder. ``Because it's a blast.''

The University of Gelsenkirchen's Dudenhoeffer said customers for bigger, more expensive models wouldn't balk at paying a bit extra to gun their engines.

``For the premium car manufacturers, they will simply pass the extra costs on to their customers, who are not especially price sensitive,'' he said. ``This shouldn't hurt their profit.'''(snip)
