Default TVP ideas for vegetarian cooking

Okay, so I purchased this bag of texturized vegetable protien yesterday, and it is dried and unflavored. The cooking directions call for boiling water, and that's it.

Does anyone have any ideas of getting flavor into dried TVP? My first thought was to used boiling broth instead of just plain water. Does this work?

I'd love to hear suggestions on uses, too. Right now I'm thinking as a meat substitute in recipes that call for ground meat, but I'd love to hear other ideas.

    XOXO Thanks!

Make some veggie tacos or nachos. Get sour cream, taco seasoning, tomatoes, lettuce, beans of your choice (black beans, kidney or red).
use lots of garlic in those beans. Mild on the salt.

I have a vegan recipe book. Let me know if either of these sound good to you and I'll post the recipe. Or maybe give me ideas...breaskfast, lunch, dinner or sides?

    Breakfast Veggie Chorizo
Veggie burgers (they stick because of the TVP)

seasoning is the key word with bland veg. diets imo.

I also use many vegetables to add flavour with any dish that is vegeterian or vegan.

Yeah, just boil it in broth and then use it however you'd use ground beef. It makes good taco filling and it's also good in stuffed cabbage, spicy omelettes, and spaghetti sauce. You just have to spice and season more to kick up the flavor.

When I was a super poor student, I would use it instead of ground beef in Hamburger Helper. I believe you can use it in just about anything that requires crumbled ground beef, but as mentioned above, it will require extra seasoning to give it a little something extra.

That was kind of what I was thinking, too. Anyone ever try it in a sweet dish, like a dessert or pudding? Someone at the grocery store suggested to use it in fruit cobbler?

I did a search online, but there isn't a lot of info about using TVP in vegetarian cooking. Most of the suggestions are to stretch out hamburger for tacos or meat loaf.

Well, the stuff is cheap. I'll get creative and let you know what I come up with. I'm having visions of TVP hot cereal (adding a tablespoon TVP per serving of cereal), TVP Quiche (I'm going to try to add smoke flavoring for an almost bacon flavor), TVP and lentil faux meat loaf, TVP and Rice stuffed peppers.

I guess I'll need to make a stop at Barnes and Noble to shop for vegetarian and vegan cookbooks. Most of the recipe sites I use are not meat alternative friendly.

There's a couple of good books you might want to look at:

Made With Love by Elizabeth Zipern
Cooking With the Dead by Elizabeth Zipern

Both books give recipes that the author compiled while speaking with "tour heads" on Grateful Dead tour. Honestly, if you vegetarian/vegan recipes, hittin up your closest hippie helps! LOL
I do remember a few recipes and tips for using TVP. And, being a former vegetarian myself, I think you can use it in place of meat or tofu in a recipe. Unfortunately I never used it. I stuck with tofu and tempeh. You can also find stores that carry flavored tofu and tempeh, like teriyaki, etc. My fave was always this product called Tofu Cutlet. YUM!
