Default must have passport! If you want to go to another state.

Do anybody know why we are going to need a passport. To travel to a differant state. In the year 2008. When did they pass this law? I know the chips are comming for the passports are coming out at the end of this year. This is horrible we are no longer the land of the free.

A separate proposed rule addressing land and sea travel will be published at a later date with specific requirements for travelers entering the United States through land and sea border crossings. As early as Jan.1, 2008, citizens traveling between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda by land or sea may be required to present a valid passport or other documents as determined by the Department of Homeland Security to enter the United States.

I knew about the Passport ruling regarding the formerly allowed overseas travel. I had not heard that State to State travel. That calls for insurrection or Gov will have gone to far.

the passport requirement is only for international travel, and actually isn't a 'new' law. What's happening is that the previous EXCEPTION to passport requirements for international travel between the US, Canada and Mexico that had previously overridden the passport laws is gradually being phased out. At the beginning of this month, the exception was removed for air travel. At the beginning of 2008 the exception will also be removed for surface travel.

Basically, this is an 'end run' devised by DHS to lay the legal groundwork that all persons attempting to enter the US via it's northern and (mostly) southern borders will be required to produce a passport. It comes in response to an apparent failure on the part of the Canadian and (mostly) Mexican govt's to prevent hordes of foreigners whose origins are in still other countries from using Mexican / Canadian airports, a fake Mexican / Canadian ID, and a rental car, from easily entering the US.

There is no requirement for a passport to be shown for a US citizen to travel to any other US state / US territory.

Also, IMHO, unless a Mexican border fence is constructed these passport requirements will do nothing to improve US security and will only constitute a pain in the a$$ for law abiding Mexican, US and Canadian citizens.

^^Yepper. BUILD THE WALL. Build it tall and wide. Like the old Berlin Wall - only better.

It will create much needed jobs for American workers

It will cut down drastically on illegal immigration, and all the crap that goes with it.

It will cost less to maintain than the current bullshit system, once it's completed.

It will reduce the number of people burdening our public assistance programs, and clogging our jails and prisons.

It might even help our economy finally climb out of the toilet.

Our country is not a damn charity!!!

Much of the problem is us. Look at how many jobs opened up in areas where illegal employers were busted. I believe in the wall - yes, so at least they can't drive truck loads of dope over the border like in AZ. But we need to focus on our own who are contributing to the problem.

Two executives from the company may also serve jail time. The Golden State Fence Company's work includes some of the border fence between San Diego and Mexico.

Oh, but just imagine the logistical nightmare that would be, esspecially in a metropolitan area with multiple states. They'd have to make every state border crossing a toll booth to pay for it all.

Sadly, while this was a misread, I can see this sort of thing coming.

...or under it. How many rat tunnels do you suppose there are under that border?

But we need to focus on our own who are contributing to the problem.
And until we do, it will never be solved. The problem is that there are too many interests that want to maintain the status quo and are lobbying effectively to make sure nothing changes, or that any changes that do come are at best mostly bark and little bite.

This is typical government business as usual in only addressing a problem because its a "hot" issue that they can score brownie points on. "See we fixed it, now re-elect us!" Once the hotness wanes, it will be back to business as usual. Wall or no wall.
    Former SCJ now in rehab.

Yes and no. Well, I guess it depends who you're calling "us".

Part of it is the fact we as a society demand such cheap products and services that we almost force the bar down so low, something has to give, and it's usually gonna be labor costs because that is generally the biggest expense and so the easiest to look at for cost-cutting. Never mind that the prices you're asking to pay are absurd.

Part of it is plain corporate and rich greed. Anything for the bottom line, for the next quarterly report, for the next executive's bonus. Never mind what it's doing to the business long term, and damn sure never mind what it's contributing (negatively) to the overall economy. Just cut labor expenses and dodge taxes as much as possible - forget about the tons of paper we go through needlessly, or the ridiculous upper level salaries and perks, or the countless other ways big business wastes money.

I do agree though, that we won't see any real changes until we get the cojones to stand up and do something radical about it. Maybe a Ross Perot is just what we need. He sure was right about that giant sucking sound he talked about in the 90s
