There's a box on the bottom right that you can click and put your comments in a little template. It will ask for your name and info on there.

Seriously guys, we need to at least send letters to express how much bullshit this is. If we don't speak up, this shit will just keep going and going.

write a letter to the editor expressing your distaste. I havent read it, and I also didn't read the rest of this thread except the first few posts, but if the article is that bad I would say that we all should write letters to the editor explaining how biased this womens story was, and that they are just reinforcing the steretype.

ok sorry I didn't read the whole thread and realize you had this idea first. I want to go read the article then I'm definitely going to write a letter.

I dont know any dancer who is going to break down into tears because some strange bitch came in and gave her a brochure and some lipgloss...unless she was about to start her period! haha As if we dont get gifts? WTF? I get gifts from customers at least once a week, it might not be much but it definately is better than a brochure and lipgloss...Bitch I got like 75 lipglosses! Dont insult me!

Andygirl that's a great letter, I hope they publish it. I want to write one as well, but I've got to read the article first. I wonder if it's online?

Her father's reaction (when he was told about the stripping) was something along the lines of "wtfomg!!!!one!!!". I bet that'll influence a lot of people's perception of the stripping industry. Well, the people that watched it anyway.

Did anyone else happen to see that episode...?

A few years ago Glamour ran a similar article by a woman who worked at a Rick's SC in Texas and she did a 180 turn....A decade ago they ran her story promoting dancing, the more recent one was her claiming dancing made her sick enough to flunk out of school & the "dancer lifestyle" killed her friend (who fell asleep in a running vehicle in the garage while high on crack.) She wasn't crusading like the "JC's Girls" but she was making a stand against her former profession.

Well, the average statistic on college dropouts is about FIFTY PERCENT of freshmen drop out.....period. Whether they're trustfund brats or the kid from the ghetto going to the local Junior College. Regardless of gender. Or life experience.

As for the "partying killed my friend" claim....carbon monoxide will kill anyone.

My point is, Glamour seems to have it out for strippers when otherwise they run good articles....It's too bad, it's the last magazine I was buying to read. Now I won't buy anymore, period!

I believe JCSGIRLS and this chick are two different groups. Although the same idea. Personally I don't have an issue with what these girls are doing, maybe just the way they may be doing it. I'll admit, there are some (I did say some) girls in the industry that neeed "saving" but then, aren't there girls everywhere that need saving?

I remember reading an article in Allure magazine where some of the magazine people went to a strip club in New York to ask some dancers about secrets to being sexy.

Okay, I just fired mine off. That article blew.

Wow, I don't know where to begin, I disagree with that article in so many ways. I've been a stripper for 2 years and I've never loved a job more. I'm a healthy, educated woman and I absolutely do not feel degraded for what I do. I have not been molested, abused, arrested, addicted to drugs or forced to strip against my will. I've been in a commited relationship with my boyfriend for over 7 years, I get along with my parents, I make a good living and when I dance, I entertain, I feel empowered, beautiful and in control, and if Harmony or anyone else came into my club and tried to "save" me from my chosen line of work - well I may be tempted to do with my 6 inch stiletto the same thing she did to someone who pissed her off.

I wrote in to them too. They cannot print the article and honestly believe that every single girl in every club all over the world hates her life and wants out. Yes, I am sure there are, but that is in ANY job, not just strippers.

I don't expect anything that any girl here writes to them to be published, but maybe they will think twice before portraying an entire profession through one person's opinion.

I wrote them too-but what was up with the teeny tiny box to post your response? Anyways, this is what I sent:

I would like to start off my response to your article on stripping by asking why is it that the media feels a need to perpetuate stripping in the negative light it currently does? There are two sides to every story, and women who choose to enter this profession come from all walks of life, just like any other line of work. For every woman who has had a bad experience in this industry there is also another who has not and truly enjoys what they do. We all have different educational
backgrounds, goals, personalities and experiences in our home lives growing up-good, bad and mediocre. What I don't understand as well is why is it that stripping is cast as inherently bad for women, but oddly enough you never hear about male strippers. They do the exact same thing we do, but somehow it is not perceived as explotative in the least or detrimental to their mental health as it is for us. I absolutely love dancing-the money you make is fantastic, you are able to stay in great shape physically, the job is a lot of fun and you have the freedom of being self-employed, making your own hours, going in to work at whatever day/time you choose and having the ability to take as much time off as you want to travel, enjoy life and also be fortunate enough to be able and spend a lot of quality time with your family and/or friends. I personally have a Bachelor's degree in Psychology, was never abused or sexually molested and do not use drugs or have a drug problem. This defies the stereotype just a bit, wouldn't you say? And I am far from being the only one in this industry with this type of background, but you never hear about us, do you? I worked in the corporate world for quite some time and I was very dissatisfied with my life and the miniscule amount of time it allowed me to actually experience life to its fullest and enjoy all that it has to offer. My life has improved drastically since I began dancing. I no longer have to worry about money, I have a job that I truly enjoy, I am saving a substantial portion of my income for my future and have so much personal freedom to pursue the things that I enjoy, travel the world and spend lots of quality time with the people I love and care about-the list goes on and on. There are so many postive aspects to this job and I find it sad that the media chooses to focus solely on the negative experiences of a select few. If you want to pity someone, why don't you pity those who work at McDonalds or Wal-Mart for $5.15 an hour and either cannot get or cannot afford health insurance for themselves and their families, not to mention
living in abject poverty-those are the people who are being truly exploited. We don't need your pity, nor do we need to be saved. We are smart, progressive women who are making the most out of a golden opportunity given to us by what is a very lucrative and rewarding job for those of us who have the mindset and discipline to get the most out of it while we can.

This comes down to money. A boo hoo I'm a stripper story will always sell more and receive less negative feedback than a pro-stripper story.

For them, it's not about the most accurate portrayal, its about making the most money.

i've been a loyal reader to glamour for awhile and i will definitely write a letter to the editor over this article.

yes, i'm college-educated and working on a master's degree. i wasn't abused. i don't do drugs. like andy's signature, i'm a stripper and i sleep just fine at night. i'm happy with my job and don't feel degraded.

aside from the article, i get a lot of customers who ask why i'm in "this"..as if "this" really is hell. some customer even tried to convince me that it's hard to "get out of" stripping like it's some drug addiction or whatever. sorry, i have more free will than that. and i will not let it "ruin my life" as some other say that it will.

oh dear god, where do people get these ideas from? talk shows? gah!

I just bought this Glamour today and didn't realize this article was in it until I read this post. If I did, I would have never purchased it (why, so I can finance and support one sided BS articles like that?!). It IS so offensive, and quite embarrassing to think of someone (whether aquainted with them or not) could read this article and make a horrible opinion/assumption about me (or any other dancer) as a person based on what this little "beauty bible" decided to publish.

I read the article and noticed that the 2 girls she "saved" are now "living with thier parents" and "working as a hostess". How the hell is minimum wage crap jobs and leeching off your parents more honorable than dancing? Give me a fucking break.

    here's mine

    Dear Glamour:

I have read and loved your magazine for years. However, I am very disappointed to see your article, “No One Should Have to be a Stripper.”

Ms. Dust seems to be doing an important and useful service for those girls who sincerely want to get out of dancing but are not sure how. I commend her for her work and her non-judgmental attitude.

Your portrayal of exotic dancers as being, to a woman, sad, desperate individuals willing to do anything to make a buck, is absolutely disgusting.

As I write this, I am sitting in my quiet farm house, having a cup of coffee and listening to Christmas music before I leave for my shift as a dancer at a small bar in Stone Park, Illinois. My life, like that of many of my friends and colleagues, is completely normal. I myself have a wonderful husband (who has a job and does not have a drug habit) and a happy, healthy son. I provide for my family an income greater than what I made teaching science, while committing fewer hours outside the home. My work provides us with extra cash for family vacations and day trips, along with the flexibility to take weeks off at a time if I need to be with my family.

I have been dancing on and off since I was 18. In fact, I will pass my 19 year anniversary next month. As a veteran in this business, I found this statement particularly offensive:

Ahnee says she saw women “who’d been working for 18 years. They had bad plastic surgery, and they’d have to have sex with customers because they weren’t in demand as dancers; they’d put a tablecloth over their lap and let the man put it in.” She didn’t want her life to get to that.

I know many women who are my age or older, who have naturally spectacular bodies, and are in extremely high demand. Not only do they have regular customers they have cultivated over the years; they are constantly attracting new customers who admire thirty- and forty-something women for their beauty and their conversation. We are all making a good living, and we are not throwing table cloths over our laps to do so.

    Sincerely,

    Colleen C. O’Reilly
