Default I Feel Like A Horrible...

Mommy. I've mentioned before that Delia has weak enamel on her teeth. This is due to the lack of fluoride in the Memphis water from the year and a half that we lived there. Without the fluoride, her teeth got very weak. At her last Doctor appointment, we found out about the lack of fluoride in the water, and before I got the chance to make a Dentist appointment for her there, Dan lost his job and the Insurance that went with it.

So, I figured we would just get her seen here. Three days ago, one of her front teeth just broke. The bottom half was completely gone. Of course, yesterday first thing in the morning, I called a Dentist. They saw her today. They cannot save the tooth, or the other front one. She also has about 5 cavities, including one on her molar. That one will have to be filled and have a crown put on it, because she won't get another in its place until she's around 13 years old. So, that tooth must be saved. So, my beautiful baby girl has to have her two front teeth pulled. Fortunately, they're going to put her completely under for that, and for the rest of the work she needs done. But I still feel like a horrible Mom. I know it wasn't anything I could really prevent, because we had no idea that the water didn't have fluoride in it, or obviously we would've given her a supplement.

We're waiting to hear from the Hospital about when she'll be scheduled to have the work done. My Mother-In-Law is taking that day off from work so she can be with me while we're there too, because I just know I won't do too well with it.

I also had a Dentist Appointment today after Delia's with another Dentist. I'm going in on VALENTINE'S DAY to have all 4 of my wisdom teeth pulled. Fortunately again, I'll be put completely under and was referred to an Oral Surgeon by my Dentist.

Bleh. Guess I just needed to vent. I feel better.. Kinda.. For now.

I have no clue why they don't, Hon. It makes me really pissed off now to think about it. She had perfect teeth before we moved there, and it caused that much damage in a year and a half. She's only 3, and has to have major dental work on her BABY teeth.

She'll have a speech impediment (lisp) for about 2 years, of course, until she gets her adult teeth around 5 or 6.

    Wonderful stuff, right?

Oh hun you rock socks. I had a ton of cavities on my teeth, babies and adult teeth! The broken tooth is still a baby tooth yeah?

And, weirdly enough, I was googling to see if there is any explanation to why there is no fluoride in that area's water... and found this:

Don't worry, Rhi, it wasn't your fault! You are a wondermous mommy! If it's any consolation, Pooka had the same problem when she was a little Shell (6 years old) And had to get four back teeth pulled and two front teeth - and I'm allergic to whatever happy gas is or anesthesi-whatever is - so I was wide awake, and am also allergic to codeine and just about every pain medicine besides childrens tylenol. So it felt awesome. But I lived and didn't blame my Mom. No need for you to blame yourself. Sucks to valentines day tooth woes, though.

:hugs: Rhia is a good momma. Don't you remember what you just posted in the Feel Good thread? The sign of a good momma.

    'Cause this is America!

There is STILL some controversy over flouridation of water. IMO, it's kind of a lunatic fringe/conspiracy theory thing, but the anti-flouride folks, while in the minority, still manage to keep flouride out of the water in some places.

Our kids took flouride pills and used flouride mouthwash; and had their teeth coated for cavity prevention after we moved to a house with well-water.

Good luck with your family dental challenges Rhiannon. It will all work out, and you will all be fine, with big bright smiles

    I bet you're a great mom!

They have flouride supplements and I took them when I was little. This was after I got 4 cavities. At least shes lucky to be put under - she wont feel a thing. Dont worry hun - youre a great mommy. Dont doubt yourself for a minute there! It also doesnt mean b/c hubby lost his job that youre a bad mommy. Things just happen that are out of your control. Youre both doing the best you can and no one said raising kids was easy either.

The same thing happened to my stepson when he was 4-5 y.o. He had tons of cavities, and all because we only had bottled water for drinking in the house. He was warned to not drink from the tap as we were on city water and didn't have a filter.

Now he uses floride rinse and floride toothpaste. No cavities since that first time around. He doesn't even remember what it feels like to have a cavity these days. (He's got almost all of his adult teeth. They are all straight and pretty, woo hoo! No braces!)

I joke that he takes after me with his nice straight teeth and no cavities.

Call me a lunitic if you like I know just about everyone will possibly disagree with me here, but its not about the flouride. Ive always lived in non-fluridated areas and the rates of cavities & tooth decay are pretty the same as in flurinated areas and sometimes lower. I didnt have any fillings until after I turned 21 and had my son. For stronger teeth magnesium and calcium at a ratio of 6:1 will help. (Most people living in 1st world countries have the ratio around the other way and even more extreme, but the body cant absorb calcium properly without magnesium.) Limiting sugar intake will reduce decay.

She's not allowed sugar at all. Never has been. She's never been a juice drinker (she hates all kinds). She's never been allowed to have soda (as much as she begs for it). She doesn't have candy. She's a BIG time Milk drinker. We go through a gallon of milk every 2-3 days.

The Dentist pinpointed the lack-of-fluoride as the problem. He said that's really the only thing that makes sense.

We'd thought that since she had a pacifier for so long, that could've contributed to the problem. But the Dentist said it wouldn't do that kind of damage. The enamel on her front teeth is totally stripped away.

The cavity on her back molar is from her not being able to brush back there very well, so we're working with her on that. (Actually, I'm brushing her back teeth, but, whatever works, right?) The rest of her teeth, she's been doing an excellent job brushing by herself.

Thanks, Guys.. I'm feeling a little better, but I know I'll be a total wreck when the day comes.

    Heh Pappy.

I just called another Dentist to see if they could look at her and give a second opinion, but the Receptionist said that if the tooth is broken and the other one is on its way there too, unfortunately there's no other way.

So now we just wait until the Hospital contacts us with a date.

    Bleh.

Aww, sweetheart, your'e a GREAT MOM! So sorry to hear about all this. When I was a kid, I had a board w/nails on it thrown @ my face, I lost like 7 baby teeth! My adult teeth came in fine, but it did take awhile. Can you have her rinse w/Act mouthwash, which contains flouride?

When Brianna was 5 or 6 she took a shitter and snapped her two font teeth. I rushed her to the er and they pulled the remains...she suffered no ill effects. It took a while for the teeth to grow in but, they have and they appear normal.

Ahh your doing fine girl she is young and sometimes these things happen you really cant say that the flouride in the water would of prevented this purely specualtion I think . She will grow her perminant teeth in and everything will be ok - there is no way you could see this coming .

That sucks! Now I'm wondering if a lifetime of Memphis water is responsible for my own bad teeth and weak enamel... my teeth give me no end of trouble, and I always figured it was dad's British genes. His teeth are even worse than mine. Hmm. Oh well, at least Memphis water actually tastes great!

She'll be okay. Just be glad it's baby teeth and not permanents!

That's definitely the bright side--they're her baby teeth. I just can't stand that she's going to have to go through the whole thing.

Yekhefah.. We had no idea about the water either until October, when both Delia and Hunter had their appointments. The Pediatrician said that her own children had the same problem and told us the reason.

The water is definitely great-tasting. Dan's a water drinker and he loved it. The bastard has no problems with his teeth either. Go figure. He brushes once a day, while Delia and I brush at least 3-4 times a day. We're the ones with the problems, and he's fine. Grr.

You might be overbrushing. My dentists agree that's why my enamel is so thin and worn; I had really bad OCD as a teenager, and I used to scrub and scrub my teeth several times a day until my gums bled. I scrubbed the enamel off.

Rhi, your are a great mommy! As for the Flouro water thing, I don't think that has anything to do with it. We do not drink tap water. Ever. The spring water we drink has no flouride. There must be some other explanation.

Oh Rhi, I can tell you're a wonderful mommy! They ARE just her baby teeth, after all. No permanent damage. My little brothers, sister, and me all had speach therapy at some point and it happens to be a ton of fun!

If it makes you feel any better, my mom didn't believe when I needed glasses (6th grade). She thought I was faking... She told me how she felt like such a bad mom when I was like, "OMG! Can you usually see the leaves on trees?!" Hehehe, I love my mom.
