    Default A Child Called "It"

Has anyone read this book? I'm trying to get through it but OMFG! I can't believe this book! I want to find that woman and beat the living shit out of her! It's just horrifying! I just got to the point where the mom put the boy's hand on the stove. I know it's going to get worse, too. I woulnt' finish this if it weren't for school.

I beleive it's been made into a movie (On Lifetime for Women of course). It was really sad, but it was a good movie. What's sad is that was alot of kids reality.

I read that book a few years ago and it was the hardest book for me to finish.

I forgot all about it until I saw the post and you know all the same emotions just blindsided me but with even more punch now that I'm a mom.

I cannot understand how a mother could be like that or even entertain the thoughts that form the actions....

I would kill anyone who even threatened my little one let alone try to inflict anything!!!!

Damn think I need a Baileys now and read some of the other posts.....

I have read that book, but not the rest that came after it, there are several more, detailing foster care years, growing up, and so forth.

It was a hard read. Very disturbing. I just can't understand why anyone would harm their child....

omg, I've read the whole series.

I saw a rerun about a month ago, and it was so painful to me. knowing that someone was so blessed with a baby, and then to hate their child so much. That is an evil evil person. This tpe of thin, that she was able to have children, just makes me so bitter. How can a mother not care for her child!?!

The worst part, for me, was when she trapped him in the bathroom with the chemicals.

^I haven't gotten to that part yet. I put it down. I'm going to do OTHER homework tonight. Really, I'm going to ask my teacher about that mother tomorrow... I'm sure she had to change her name or something. She seemed crazy from the beginning. I hope the book explains some of it.

I want to be a teacher. This class is Cultural Diversity and Schooling. I don't really understand what it has to do with culture... maybe he just wants to torture us.

Bella, I read it for school also. It is a good book for teachers to read because it took so long for a teacher to do anything about his abuse, even though the signs were really obvious. I met him and he signed my book--he's so little! He has a son now and is doing well--just think of that when the book gets sad.

This is my favorite book. For one, it is writen beautifully and you feel as if you are right there with him. I also liked the two that followed it. If you do like to read I strongly suggest that you read the whole series.

That book had me heartbroken. The whole series is a really hard journey to read, I can't imagine how he survived it.

No one knows what happened to the rest of the family? Damn it, I'm so stupid... I picked it up again. I don't know WHY I thought I'd read it until I passed out. I'm so MAD!!

If they ever do show a movie adapted from this book and Dave's story, I will not watch it. The book made you feel like you were *there* with him enough, going through everything that he did. His *Mother* (and I don't think she ever deserved that title) was a true monster.

I recommend reading the other two books in the series, so you'll get the full story.

    "The Lost Boy"
    "A Man Named Dave"

I read all three of these books within 3 days. I seriously couldn't put them down.

The fact that Dave eventually forgave his Mother before her death shows what a very strong soul he is. When I read the books, I was so pissed off at his father. To sit there and LET his Son go through all of that WHILE HE WATCHED, disgusts me to no end.

She'd even told him when he was grown that she could've killed him in an instant---But keeping him alive, and terrorizing him was more fun for her.

He was made to throw up EVERY DAY after school, to make sure that he hadn't eaten at school. And, when he did manage to eat something there, she'd make him eat it after he threw it up. The father watched this and did NOTHING.

Then of course, the ammonia incidents. Ugh.

As for the rest of the family---Richard was the next victim after Dave was removed from the home. He was Dave's replacement and received the same treatment. When you read the second book, you'll get bits of that. Richard also has a book out "A Brother's Journey". I haven't read it, because I feel that he's a bit of a copycat, and trying to lessen what his Brother went through.

His father passed on before his Mother.. Then, she finally passed away---the smoking and alcohol abuse finally caught up with her.

But I highly recommend reading the other two books. They are really inexpensive, too. Go to Target and grab them. They're both under $10 each.

I read the first two books in the bookstore as I was standing in the aisle crying my eyes out. I went through a similar, but not as severe expereince growing up to be a young adult. I escaped the madness. Maybe one day I will forgive my "NMother" and family, but right now I only talk to my sister and my oldest aunt. I have a hard time talking to a few others. I was close to my great-grandma growing up. She was my cheerleader for life. She was always in my corner.
Dave's story is heartbreaking, but it happens everyday. He has come through so much, bless him. Now I'm crying.

Talked to two high school or junior high school students for whom this was required reading. Seems a little excessive after reading your descriptions.

Yet they will most likely not be reading "Catcher in the Rye" or "1984".

I don't honestly know if I could bear reading the books. Sure he found a way to survive and get through it, but I can not bear evil visited upon children, it is one of the things that makes my blood boil. Even reading Amazon's descriptions has bothered me.
