    Photoshop Question - GRRRR!

I'm trying to learn how to use Photoshop, but the tutorials are so fucking unhelpful! I've got two separate images and I'm trying to cut a dog out of one image and a wig in the other, then combine them into the same new file (nevermind, just go with it). The dog is against a background and I just want the dog; the wig is on a person's head with a background and I just want the wig without the background or the model. I can't figure out which tool I'm supposed to use to outline the part I want. They all draw boxes instead of lines or curves. The tutorial makes no damn sense - "highlight the path to the blah blah blah" without telling me which tool I'm supposed to be using in the first damn place!

Am I an idiot or is this really that esoteric?? This is Photoshop CS for Mac, if that makes any difference.

If you have quickmask on your program, that can be used to cut out the entirety of what you want.

What I would do is carefully lasso select both of these object. Copy them and paste into a new file. You can then resize and edit the picture.

    That's ofcourse the easy way.

Thanks! I figured out the lasso...

Now I need to know how to draw a shape. I've got sunglasses but they have no frames, and I need to put frames on them but it looks stupid when I try to draw it freehand. Also, how do you make a white background? The background is transparent and there's a lot of black on my image, and I'd like to print it on a black shirt so a border around it would be nice.

And how do you put a border around text so you get two-tone letters?

The tutorial on this thing is so useless!

If you want to learn the quick msk, it's basically like covering the entire image you want to cut out with the paintbrush tool. It's awesome for small spots and cutting multiple things out at once.

As for the text.... Make it the size you want it for both layers... go into the layers, and click on the text layer. Right click on it and chose to "select layer transparency"... you'll get the flickering line around the text. Go to the top of the program and click on "Select". Choose "Modify". Chose the "Border" option and put in the thickness in pixels you want. This will make a flickering line border around your text. Go back to "Select" and click "Inverse". Do that again. (two times total) Then get yer brush tool. Pick the color you want for the border. Make the brush size the largest it can go. Put it over the text and left click to brush the color. It will tell you that it needs to rasterize. Ok that. It should make you a border of the color in question.

I still can't figure out how to put frames on the shades. I didn't mean to grab the shades, but I used the magic wand tool to grab the afro, and since the shade lenses were black they came along with it. It looks weird if I try to cut them off, and I do kind of like the way they look, but it's just lenses with no frames.

    This is fucking difficult!

And yeah, hah, it'll look pretty funny when I get it finished. It's my friend's stupid-looking pug in a huge Afro wig. It's for my short film.

Here's what I've got so far just so y'all can see what I'm talking about... the sunglasses need frames, the text needs a border to set it apart, and the entire image needs a white border so it will stand out against a black shirt.

If anybody wants to know what the hell this is about... in my short film, the main character, Scotch, is a voice actor on a children's cartoon show called "Hair of the Dog," which is about a pug with a talking afro wig. We don't see any of the cartoon show in my short film, but there are numerous references to it (Scotch has to perform the voices of both the dog and the wig) and there's a guy wearing a T-shirt with the show's logo, which is what I'm trying to create here. I also want to put it on my crew T-shirts, and these will be available for sale to the general public as well (so if you want one, buy one!).

So yeah. This is what I'm trying to do... I'll try Paige's advice about the text editing, but does anyone know how I can give the whole image a white outline? Currently the background is transparent.

For the border of the whole image, go to the layer that the white background is on and select it so it's got the flickering line around it. Do the same thing you do with the text. Select Modify, Border, etc.... it will do the same thing.

As for the shades... the best idea I can think of is to use quick mask. It will make a flickering line around the shades as well then you can do the same border trick.

Where is this quick mask, Paige? I can't find it.

And what layer for the white background? The background is transparent. Should I make a white layer or what? I don't understand what you mean with that part.

Sorry that this is such a blurry graphic but...

If you click on the right-most icon with the circle in it, you go into quick mask mode. Then you can basically color in everything you want to either highlight or cut. Then you click on the left-most and it'll all end up with that flickering line around it.

When I clicked on the graphic you posted, it looked like the whole image was on a white background. Are you going to have a background color on it or will it be a transparency?

How do I color in what I want to highlight? Sorry, I'm a total moron about this kind of thing...

The background is transparent because I want to print it on black shirts. I do want a white border around the whole image (including text) so it shows up against a black shirt, but I don't want it to be a cheap-looking square block. Just one of those borders around the image, so it doesn't blend into the fabric.

You're used to using the brush tool? Quick mask works the same way. Drag it over what you want, like coloring in.

Hmm... Gimmie a minute to mess with photoshop to figure the border out.

Nevermind... I'm thinking I could probably finish it up, get the whole image where I want it, and save it as a single .png, then import that into a new file and follow your instructions to put a border on that single image. Would that work?

    I think so.

I just poked around at a transparent image with a graphic on it (single layer). If you Select All, then do the Modify -> Border - > Inverse x2 it will work just like the others. You can color in the selected area and it will become a border.

Well dammit, I can't make it work because there's no right-click button on this laptop. There's just the one big mouse button, which usually acts like a right-click if you hold it down... but in this case it doesn't do anything.

I emailed an art department friend. Maybe he can draw something. <grumble>

Fucking computers are a pain in the ass.

How does this look? It looks okay on the black shirt, but I still can't get the white border on it and the afro blends in. Does anyone know how to put this border on it??

I tried DLing it and seeing if I could put a border on it, but it saves with a white background. Jpegs do that, they're evil. have you saved any of this as a Photoshop file at all?

Yes, I have, and also as a .PNG (I didn't save it as a .JPG; the StripperWeb program re-sizes it and converts it). I could email it to you, if a border is a simple matter for you and you're not busy...

Ha ha! I dig it. Is the image background still transparent?

I was envisioning a white "glow" type border around the whole image, not just the 'fro. I figured it would be the simple matter of highlighting everything and clicking "border" or something, like an image shadow only white, but clearly Photoshop's creators would rather make it complicated instead. Anyway... I dig it. Anybody else dig it? Would you buy that shirt?

Methinks the white border isn't showing up on a white background here. Grrrr. Hmmm. And yes, the original is still transparent.
