    Movies With an Internal Story

Now that K's out of town again, I'm going to buckle down and try to finish a draft on this new screenplay. This one's tricky because the story and development are mostly internal, and very personal to the characters. I'm thinking tonight I may have a movie marathon and watch some examples to see how this is done.

I'm going to re-watch Closer, and a friend suggested On Golden Pond. Any other suggestions?

Have you seen "The Salton Sea" yet? It'll give you a big dose of Scary LA County, but the protagonist is on a big secret mission/ transformation.

I do love "Lantana"...from Australia. The protagonist is oddly sympathetic (a burned-out cop [Anthony LaPaglia].) Barbara Hershey's performance is great too. All around fine film.

I didn't think the Salton Sea was in L.A. County. Is it? I could've sworn it was farther south... anyway I've heard of the movie but have no idea what it's about. I'll look it up.

Haven't heard of the Australian movie but I'll definitely look for that one too. Thanks!

There are some scenes in the city of LA, downtown (watch out for a cameo by Everyone's Favorite Drill Instructor R. Lee Ermey, seeing him play a sympathetic character is worth watching the whole film.) The plot neccessitates the protagonist & his associates going out to the "-dale" parts of the LA area...I don't want to spoil the film.

"Full Metal Jacket" is centered around Private Joker's transformation, but it's not the kind of movie one just throws into the mix for Movie Day. Be warned.

Oh, I've seen Full Metal Jacket a zillion times! Great movie.

I'll look for Salton Sea. It sounds good.

I don't mean to be dense here, but can you be more specific about what you mean by "internal"? Meaning that a character changes in very subtle ways, or can the changes be overt? Can they be affected by circumstance, and if so, how? Can the influences of other characters be obvious? My first thought was that you meant a story within a story, but I'm not sure given the examples so far . . .

I'm talking about a story like On Golden Pond, where the conflict is unspoken and takes place in the subtext. In this particular circumstance, there's marital boredom and malaise, frustration at not being where they wanted to be in life, and worry about growing older and its implications (I'm being very general here; I promise the story is more interesting than that). I HATE it when people in movies talk about their feelings; I'm talking about the kind of movie where the line might be "You burned the toast" but the subtext is "You ruined my life," to give a melodramatic example.

Oh, man, I LOOOOVE On Golden Pond. Such great performances. Closer was amazing too. Okay, hmmm. Well, I haven't seen it recently enough to think of whether this fits all that well, but what about American Beauty? There are huge chunks of the movie that I personally thought were about as subtle as a sledgehammer, but some of the brimming-with-tension dinner table scenes & other moments might be good to review. To use your example, like when Lester says "I'm going to go get some ice cream," he really meant to add "you castrating harpy." (There's also lots and LOTS of the dreaded talking about feelings, but the contrast might be good to witness.)

I know there are others on the tip of my cranium . . . I'll try to get them to show themselves.
