Need Advice About a New Mattress!

Ok, we're looking to buy a new mattress since our old one is killing my back. I've never had to buy a mattress, so I was just wondering the good/bad as far as mattresses go. So...we're looking for a queen size and I'm not much for firm mattresses- any help or advice (good reviews or bad) would be very much appreciated!

Any brand names would be great, too!

Never get toooooo soft or it will wear out toooooo quickly. You can go a little firmer if you get a pillow top. I always recommend the old method of laying down on the bed and trying it out. Sorry I'm no good with brands.

A too hard matress is also not a good thing... as much as I hate the airbed, and I know our bed is comming back I'm not looking forward to it. I swear it is a couple of soild wold planks. Then again Koreans have been known to sleep on marble beds. I still can't believe they were for sale in this Posh department store.... egads.

I would recommend checking out places like Mattress Liquidators/Mattress Value Superstores. They offer off-price mattress sets for very good prices. I got a premium set 10 years ago for ...I think, $399 and this year I think I will finally replace it--but it's still in pretty good shape, just developing a dip where I sleep.

Second the pillow-top recommendation. I also have a plush mattress pad and a 1.5" memory foam topper. My bed is absolute nirvana at this point--all the support and all the comfort one could want.

I really love my select comfort bed:

you can change it to varying levels of firm or soft.

Remember to flip! I always flip my mattress once a month. It helps me get good use out of it

Costco is your friend. Find someone you know how has a membership or get one yourself. THey have good brands at good deals (when it comes to mattresses at least). Personally, Sealy (posturepedic, tempurpedice) has always been my friend.

Definitely go for a pillowtop. They are so comfortable. I have a Simmons Beautyrest and I LOVE it. But seriously, the only way you'll know for sure is to check them out in person. Lay down on the for a good few minutes, and roll around a bit too. Take your time. It will be worth it once you find the one for you.

My guy purchased a Stearns and Foster, great reputation. Can't remember if it's a Plush or an Ultra Plush, but it is pillowtop. I sleep so well at his place I'm getting one. He only needed the top matress (platform bed). That with the waterproof mattress pad was around $1100.

Well, what's your price range? I wouldn't advise getting the cheap mattress since they tend to wear out fairly quickly...

In order to do it properly.
You need to go to a store and lay on each one.
It can't be a quick thing either.
Take your time and try all of them until you feel one that is right.

There's a couple on sale now.

I read a thread on another message board where a lot of people said they liked the sleep number bed. I think you can try them out in malls.

I have a pillow top mattress and it's okay but I'm not sure I'd get another one.

Man, a sleep-number bed is the way to go if you're willing to spend some money.

My cousins have one. I house/pet-sat for them last spring and I seriously don't think I've slept that well in a long time.

Thanks everyone! We went and got one yesterday...I don't even remember which brand it was. It was just the one I kept hopping on and thinking...."Yep...this is it!"

I slept better than I have in YEARS!
