Default Requiring you register to vote before you can receive your high school diploma.

This idea is being floated in California right now. But as the talk-show host I was listening to just now pointed out, it's asking for an "equal protection under the law" lawsuit against the state if it does pass, which I doubt.

Why? Because you can't require this of those students who graduate at age 17, who can't legally register to vote. So neither can you require it of those who are age 18 without running afoul of the potential lawsuit.

That's stupid. I don't want to be required to register to vote. It just be a waste. I dont vote. I don't follow politics, they bore the hell out of me, and I would not be an informed voter.

what happens to the illegal aliens graduating from California high schools ? Do they get registered to vote as well ?

^^^ That was my thought, too. And anyway they won't pick up many voters this way... the graduation rate for the L.A. Unified Public School District is less than 40%.

This seems impractical and problematic. I was 17 when I graduated, too young to vote. I did register on my 18th birthday though, and haven't missed an election since. A better idea would be to get kids interested in politics so that they will actually WANT to vote.

The host brought this up as well. But what he didn't bring up is if state law would be applied to the legislature, if they passed such a bill.

Most, if not all states, I believe, have laws against forcing someone else to commit a felony, which should include those who are unwittingly here illegally. I'm not sure if registering to vote when you're in the country illegally is a misdemeanor or a felony, but I think it is the latter.

If such a bill passed, should the legislators who voted in the affirmative then be charged with this particular crime? I know it wouldn't happen, but it's an illustration of how legislators will "float" potential legislation, even when they know it can't be passed, due to legal considerations.

^^^ I would imagine some legislators who figure they would benefit from having more immature, naive and penniless registered voters in their state / district !

Being registered doesn't mean you'll actually vote though... Lame!

Glad you can admit that--I respect that.

That's stupid. It is not like drop outs can't register to vote. Oh hey, lets hold the diploma hostage for things even a drop out can do.

Well, luckily there are a whole lot of Cato's (the younger) on this board!

I've not heard that one, but now I have to look it up.
