    Default Fat Woman Spin-off

I actually posted this question in my recent post, but I decided it would be better as a spinoff. Lets take this friendly debate up a notch. Do you ladies feel that Tyras weight gaining confidence is a result of her race? I ask this b/c in my community it's more acceptable to be "thick", it's actually expected in most instances. Do you think race plays a factor in acceptable weight gain.

Also, do you feed off of other races views towards weight? Caucasion women how do you feed off of other races, positively, negatively, please explain
Black women, the same question applys.

I will give one example of how I positively feed off of caucasion women..... health! I was raised health conscious by my mother, but she seemed to stress the herbal/ incensce sort of African American woman health vibe ( Think Erykah Badu). I've now incorporated other things in my diets strongly influenced by other races ie; raw veggies, protein shakes, etc. Now I feel more complete.

My only "issue" in a sense with caucasion womens diets is how they are portrayed on t.v. I LOVE to hear a caucasion woman ( hell, any race besides mine) find strength in curves, and embrace it. I feel the weight issue runs rampant in some communtites b/c of media portrayl creating a viscious cycle. Hell media affects my community as well.... I never thought I would see the day so many genuinely obese women in my community ( I mean diabetes big) would be running around hollering "thick" "I'm Thick" as though it's a playground version of "safe".

There is a fine line between "thick" and one-more-bite-away-from-fat

Answer openely and honestly ladies, I'm really curious on others views regarding possible correlation.

I read a study awhile back that examined the body image of different teenage girls. It found that the black girls had a much healthier self-image than anyone else, which does confirm my own experience. I know a zillion skinny white women who are obsessed with dieting and hunting down flaws, and just as many thick, curvy black women who are absolutely convinced that they are goddesses. Anyway, the study found that white girls had a very poor self-image, black girls had a very high self-image, Latinas had a high self-image as well, and Asian girls varied widely.

^^^ I honestly think white women are too hard on themselves. White women are beautiful! I love being black, don't get me wrong lol, but why so much pressure.

I agree. It's cultural; our mothers do it to us. When I was a teenager I really believed that I was chunky, mostly due to things my mom would say (and she IS fat). I was really shocked when I was 17 and my then-boyfriend wouldn't let me sit on his lap because my butt was boney. I was a size 4 and weighed 110 and I thought I was fat!

Now I could stand to lose ten pounds, but fuck it. I'm a demon in the sack and my boyfriend likes it when I jiggle, so I have the cheese fries when I want them.

In my own experiance, I see black women(and some white women but alot less) with a thicker curvier figure that suits them well. I am not sure why but I feel they carry it better and it looks good, its the hourglass effect or something.
I personally know i can not carry the weight in that way, therefore i need to stay as trim/slim as possible to be confident. Now i have been a little thicker or "softer" i may say, and been ok with it, but i feel i look better with less weight. It comes down to body types for me.
i would assume body confidence comes from the way you are raised and the way your community looks upon it.

I see super skinny black girls, thick black girls, overweight black girls... I always thought that they naturally have some more curves and rounder butts (though not all of them), regardless of their weight. I think that if Tyra were white, she would be recieving MUCH more crap about her weight.

There are other racial groups that look good thicker, like Pacific Islanders.

I'm not threadjacking but I do recall from Tyra's heyday....a big controversy about her was that her bi-racial look made people wonder if her image was pressuring African-American women to look more "white." (This was a bigger deal than her jerking down her bikini bottom on her famous Sport Illustrated cover shot...) Maybe the popularity of Brazilian models owes something to Tyra's bi-racial image, since race mixing is common in Brazil.

We do have a problem in America with obesity because of sedentary lifestyles & the cost of fresh, clean food (I never realized the markup on produce until I moved out of one of the top produce-growing regions of the U.S.)
Don't you think it's interesting that in America our idea of a "good" job is a desk job? There used to be more hard-labor jobs ("blue collar") where people would work off calories. Now that work is stigmatized & you're supposed to want to work in a cubicle, which is hell for most people.

^^^^ I agree with ya. And isn't it interesting that in America the poor are fat, and the rich are skinny. Leave it to us to have poor people only being able to afford cheap, nutrient deprived ( yet yummy) food, while the elixir to thiness depends to what you have in the bank account. I don't know HOW many diets I've failed b/c I couldn't afford the "organic" "USDA Approved" " Lean Cut"...etc, etc

i've often wondered if it's not simply having dark skin that makes it easier to pull off the "thick" look. look at all the time white strippers spend tanning because it'll make them look thinner/toner. it only stands to reason than someone with naturally dark skin would already have that advantage. i'm by no means fat but i'm pale as fuck & you can see every dent & dimple & stretch mark i have. if i had dark skin, i wouldn't give a second thought to what i perceive as "weight related flaws".

Well, it's about convenience for a lot of people. You can eat healthy and stay thin for low cost, but it will require some effort on your part. There are plenty of people who cook at home and stay thin, and they aren't necessarily rich. I think it has a lot to do with how you are brought up. My parents both exercised and my mom made nothing but healthy food for us. And we were far from rich.

As for Tyra, I think her race definitely has something to do with how confident she is about her weight. Well, that and the fact that she's not actually fat.

^^^ I'm exagerating to a degree, but my mother cooked healthy only when she could afford it. Sorry hun, but if you live check to check in a single family home despite being far from rich, it's more challenging to cook healthier. For example, my friend is on WIC for the sake of her childs health because food ( especially nowadays) that's a degree healthier for her and her child is pricey. Look at the ghetto, it's not a coeincedence (spell) that the people their are overweight and unhealthy. USDA approved food that is distrubuted throughout poor neighborhoods are FAR from healthy.

Trust me, you can only do but so much with what you're given. Hence the poor in this country fat/overweight, rich ( and not in the literal since) skinny. Next time you're in the supermarket price compare organic veggies, and fresh produce, than look at the items on sale and their ingredients. Sure a mother of three could go with the veggies that may only cost two dollars extra than the hamburger helper, but her priority is keeping her children stomaches full. Which one will strecth a mother on a budget/ mother that finances are a lil tight?

Organic stuff is more expensive than the regular stuff, but that doesn't mean you can't get a pound of apples (or whatever) on sale for a few bucks. I think it's the people in extreme poverty who may have a problem with buying hamburger helper instead of something healthier.

Instead, I think it's more a matter of convienince. If you're working 12 hours a day to support your family, are you going to fix hamburger helper for dinner or are you going to make a veggie stir-fry? Are you going to stop by subway or are you going to stop by McDonalds? I could get into how this affects children's opportunities for education and how it turns into a horrible cycle and then how people relate THAT to race... but that's a wee bit off subject.

Well, I'll be totally honest. I am a skinny white bitch (well, I'm actually Sicilian but look white lol) and uhh.. I don't find anything racial in my sentiments, but I definitely think dancers should be skinny. That sounds so mean!! But, you know, we are supposed to be the ultimate dream girls in men's minds, and uhhh... I think that involves being thin and in shape. Nobody hate on that, I was asked for my honest response! And with the single mom thing.... yeah, I had one... and we were poor as fuck. I don't see what that has to do with weight, honestly. I mean, this is going to sound horrible, but even if you have to buy cheap food, you don't have to eat a pound of it. Trust me, I grew up poor and skinny, so poor in fact I didn't realize you could be poor and NOT skinny, as we had no extra food to spare. My step sisters and I were hitting each other over the last hydrox, and if you don't know what that means, I guess you never been poor like me.

Cept that there is not one single "dream girl" in the mind of all men.

As for the OP... I agree. My black relatives have a LOT more self confidence about being thick... or even overweight! The white folks in my family.... not so much. I hear a lot of bitching from siblings and cousins.... "Oh Im so fat!" and so on.

I was VERY unhappy when I was skinny. I hated the way I looked. Now that I have gained about 30lbs and some curves, my confidence has skyrocketed. I know that sounds like a lot of weight but I was 90-95 lbs and at 5'1" that's too small for my taste. It has hindered me some at white clubs because most of the time they do want the smaller girls but I bank at black clubs so I fit in somewhere!

Often in poor neighborhoods the markets charge more for groceries because they know you can't just drive somewhere else to get them. You can't walk a few miles with groceries either so--you must either pay ransom for quality food or go without. I paid more for groceries living in the Lower East Side NYC than I did out in Clifton NJ. KRAZY!!!

I can see why white women generally push for the skinnier look because that's what their guys generally like. Oddly, I found that white guys approach me more aggressively than black guys because I'm skinny, and the boobs. I tried working Black clubs and got teased or ignored. So the guys of any ethnicity certainly let you know what they want! I think the trick is to stay within the bounds of what's healthy. That's why I think the ban on super thin models is a good first step. Serve their preference but don't jack up your health!
