A Good Girl With Bad Intentions
They have a giant squid living in an aquarium?? WTF?? The last I heard, no one had ever seen one alive, much less captured one. Is it a corpse or something?
How big is that thing??? EEEEEeeeek!

Ewwww eww eww. I am so scared of squid, and jellyfish, and other creepy things from beneath the sea.

Yes it's a corpse and it's 7 metres long!!
It's eye looked so huge up close.
Here is the info on it:
Melbourne Aquarium’s newest attraction is nothing short of amazing! A 7 metre Giant Squid (Architectus dux) that has been frozen in time and forms the centrepeice of our incredible new ‘Monsters of the Deep’ exhibition.
This rare species has long been the subject of debate, myth and intrigue featuring in films such as 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea and The Abyss. Although scientist know very little of its habits, this species is known to dive to depths of greater than 1 kilometre and competes for territory with other giants of the sea including sperm whales. Earlier in 2005, for the first time ever, Japanese scientists filmed this deep-sea giant.
Our specimen was found off the southern coast of New Zealand’s South Island in 2003. The preservation and display of this mighty beast is thought to be world-first technology with Melbourne company Donohoes Ice creating the largest man-made block of ice anywhere on the planet!
Come and visit this incredible display, which also features rare footage of Mexican Humboldt Squid off the Baha coast as well as live displays of Flashlight fish, Dumpling squid and Sand Octopus.
School groups completing Self-guided and General programs will have an extended opportunity to witness this beast first-hand.

More animals from the Melbourne aquarium.
The fish is called a grouper (i think) and the lizard is a monitor.

Heh... we EAT grouper back where I come from!

where is that?
when i went to see the squid everyone was making jokes about how much calamari it would make.
Ew, calamari!
I come from the South, where we eat all manner of animals which are too ugly to eat. Frogs, crappie, grouper, gar, catfish, pigs' intestines... blargh. As much as I love the South and good Southern food, I'm happy to restrict myself to the Jew-friendly dishes.
Mmm, calamari. mmmm, ika. mmmm, frog legs. mmmm, chitlin's.
I don't think I'd want to dive in with that big eyeball, though. Now, that's just gross.

Now I want scungilli and calamari so bad.

I was checking out a bag of frozen calimari at Trader Joe's just a few hours ago. I wish I would have bought it now.![]()
Thanks for posting this. It hadnt even crossed my mind that melbourne had an aquarium, lol! I must go there next time, I LOVE aquariums!

^^^ me too! Everywhere that I travel I visit the local aquarium.
The giant squid is no longer there but there is always some new display. Right now they have giant spider crabs from Asia.

I nearly went inside the aquarium since it was on my way from meeting up with a mate at his work place at crown. I nearly did. Then I went.. nah.. I got better things to waste my money on like foodFood trumps everything for me as to the way I "splurge" myself
esp Melbourne as it has alot of options !!

if you're ever near san francisco come stop by the monterey bay aquarium. right now we have a great white shark on display!

A great white! Wow I thought they couldn't be kept in captivity. That must be a huge tank they are keeping it in. I would love to see it. In fact I think I must go google that now to see if I can find any pics.
Yep I also go to zoos and pretty much anything to do with animals.
If any of you have a chance to go to Singapore, check out a place called Jurong Bird Park. It is the most incredibly beautiful place. It's dedicated to birds and has a man-made waterfall where wild birds come and go as they please. There is flamigo lake which is surrounded by a restaurant (they get a lot of wedding bookings). They have a parrot area which is just gorgeous and they even get the parrots to do shows like rollerskate and play basketball.
I also saw a stalk in real life for the first time, they are very large.
