    Default another turbo-tax question

I went to staples to see about buying it, but found that there are about five different versions. Which one do you recommend I use?

Not sure if this matters when deciding which version is best, but...i will be claiming IC and employee earnings, since I was a bartender for my first 3 months at the club, before i switched to dancing. I don't travel for work or have any other business situations going on, and I have only a basic savings account and two CDs to account for as far as claming interest/investments.

What if you worked in another state as a dancer for most of 2006. Then moved to another state but don't work there, but work in Nevada and commute?

it depends if your legal residence home state and/or the other states you worked in have an income tax. One year I wound up having to file non-resident tax returns for five other states in addition to a resident tax return for my home state of NY. Each state will attempt to collect tax on the income that you earned while working in their state. Then you can file for a tax credit on your home state tax return for income taxes that were paid to other states.

Of course where TurboTax is concerned, you'll need to purchase a separate state tax disk for every different state that you have to file non-resident tax returns for.

    Thanks for your response.

To be more specific, I lived and worked in Nebraska most of 2006. November 2006 I went to Las Vegas, obtained a business license and worked. December 13, 2006 moved to Utah and now commute to Las Vegas to work.

My question, do I have to pay Utah income tax, even though I have never worked here? Also, is my moving expenses a tax write off? Can I write off my commuting expenses?

Now, I know that I have to pay Nebraska state income tax for 2006, however, for 2007 I am unsure. Should I try to get a tax accountant in Utah?

    Thanks!

By my read, you'll have to file a Utah resident tax return if you want to take advantage of tax credits. Since Nevada does not have a state income tax you won't have to worry about filing a Nevada tax return.

If you stay overnight in Vegas when you are working there, then yes your travel expenses and hotel bill are tax deductible as long as you keep actual receipts instead of using IRS per-diem allowances. Your meals are not deductible unless you eat inside the club with a customer (a deductible meal must have a DIRECT business purpose). See

It is unlikely that moving expenses to Utah would survive an audit because they are not 'closely linked' to your new location of employment in Nevada. Plus I doubt that you could meet the full time working hours requirement. See

Go to turbotax.com and it will have full descriptions of the products. I use the premiere for my personal and home based business, and I use business for my s corp. BTW, I did my taxes on Saturday, and my effective tax rate: ZERO! I'm a genius!

so, can I file both my employee earnings from the bar and my independent-contractor earnings with deluxe, or do I need Home and Business? Still a bit confused after looking at their website, just because the "product comparison" mentions nothing about being able to file IC earnings with anything other than Home and Business.

We have a lot of tax shelters that saved our asses this year. Had an accountant friend look over the finished return and he said it was definitely acceptable (and it was completely and totally true). Hence the reason why people who have a lot of money pay less in taxes (which is what we are learning how to do). Tax Shelters. Definitely a good thing.
